VW Polo: hybrid plug-in version in the works

By Adrian

Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion 1.2 TDI

According to AutoWeek.nl, in the coming years Volkswagen will launch a particularly eco-friendly version of the Polo, with hybrid powertrain and plug-in option. As anticipated by VW Group CEO Martin Winterkorn in an interview with AutoZeitung, this news is a further confirmation of their commitment to invest heavily in plug-in hybrid sector.

Winterkorn said it is just ‘necessary’ to have at least one plug-in hybrid vehicle on offer, and the VW models that are more likely to debut this type of technology are the Polo and the Golf, with the former that will have to face the competition from Toyota Yaris HSD, the first full-hybrid car in the B-segment.

Noticing that plug-in hybrid vehicles are the ideal mid-term solution to reduce CO2 emission and fuel consumption - until pure electric vehicle technology is sufficiently advanced - Winterkorn took the chance to deny rumors that a Polo-based compact crossover is in the works. The reason why VW rules out any interest in such a product is mainly economic: the kind of investment that the production of a little 4WD SUV variation of the Polo would require is just too big.

Volkswagen Polo R WRC video

By Alison

Volkswagen is back in WRC racing from 2013 with the new Volkswagen Polo R WRC. This first video shows us a brief look at the whole car (at the end of the video) and this is one very mean-looking Polo - who would have thought it could get these nasty hot-hatch looks? A relatively conventional video, Volkswagen is relying on all the emotion of rally car lovers to welcome it back to racing and we get some exciting footage to go with it. We’re still waiting on all the official details which should be released in the future, but in the meantime we’re happy to watch the video a second time.

Volkswagen back to rallying: Polo R WRC

The Volkswagen Polo R WRC rally car will get a debut in the 2013 World Rally Championship. The new Polo model will be equipped with a 1.6-litre, turbocharged engine which could produce about 300 hp. The Polo R WRC will complete at least two years in the rally championship, until 2015, although official drivers haven’t been announced yet.

VW has some rallying history from the 1980’s and the Polo R is already an on-road competitor for the Citroen DS3 and Ford Fiesta. Obviously any rallying success is not just about the hot hatch, but also the team that Volkswagen can build, but after the return of Mini to the WRC, the competition is getting more interesting. Check out the Polo R WRC pics below.

Volkswagen Polo GT and GTD models coming?

By Alison

Volkswagen Polo GTI

After the arrival of the Volkswagen Polo GTI, the range could be expanded to include Polo GT and Polo GTD models. The Polo GTI model is equipped with a 1.4-litre TSI engine with 180 hp, and the other possible models could get similar power increases and new engines designed to offer a broader and more attractive range.

The Polo GT could receive the 1.4 TSI engine with 150 hp and the Volkswagen DSG gearbox, in a move that would copy the Seat Ibiza line-up, which has both FR and Cupra offerings. The Polo GTD rather, could be equipped with a 1.6-litre engine with 130 hp. According to reports, the launch date could be sometime at the end of 2011, so it’s still early to say whether these models will happen, and if so exactly what their technical details will be.

Karl Lagerfeld Volkswagen Style package

Volkswagen has got together with fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld who represents a new Style package for the Volkswagen Polo, Golf and Golf Plus models. Lagerfeld is being used in the advertising campaign for the package, which is a series of options that when purchased together, save the customer some money.

The Style special editions offer new light-alloy wheels, tinted side and rear windows and fog lights, along with the Style series badging. The Style-Plus package adds another set of alloys and throws in a sunroof or panorama roof as well. On the German market, the Polo style model starts at about 14,075 euros (saving 1,885 on buying the options separately), while the Golf Style package at 18,825 euros is a full 2,335-euros saving. Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion and Golf blue-e-motion

By Alison

Volkswagen Golf blue-e-motion

While the Volkswagen Polo models with BlueMotion technology expand to include the petrol line-up, the Volkswagen Golf blue-e-motion plans to become a fully electric vehicle have stalled somewhat. The E-Golf will turn up in 2013, not earlier, and will become part of the Golf VII range. The E-Golf won’t make it to the current sixth generation model as Volkswagen cites possible changes to the platform as reason for the delay.

Currently the electric Golf model is in prototype and testing phase, equipped with an electric motor and lithium ion batteries producing 115 hp and 270 Nm of torque. It’s enough to reach a top speed of 135 km/hr and Volkswagen calculates that the range is about 150 km. The electric motor has a three stage power output: Normal - 88 hp and 115 km/hr top speed, Range+ - 69 hp and 105 km/hr, and Comfort+ with 115 hp and 135 km/hr.

While Volkswagen works on its all-electric vehicle, it continues to roll out the BlueMotion technology across its other models (as a curiosity, the Volkswagen electric Golf weighs about 205 kg more than the BlueMotion Gold variant). The fuel and emissions saving technology is being included on the fuel engine models of the Volkswagen Polo.

Volkswagen Up! vs Dacia Citadine: 5000 euros and citycars

By Alison

Volkswagen up!

The Volkswagen Up! production version will appear at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, scheduled for next September, with the first version to be a three-door, four-seater model with a range of petrol and diesel engines. The Up family will expand in the future to include a five-door version and a fully electric, battery-powered model in 2013 - the same year the electric Golf and Jetta are expected to appear.

The engine range could be extended to the Volkswagen Polo model as well but we’re left a little perplexed on the price. The Volkswagen Up could have a starting price of about 10,000 euros which makes sense if it’s to be the sub-Polo compact in the VW range, replacing the Volkswagen Fox, currently the smallest VW on offer.

But for that price in Europe you can also stretch to a new Opel Corsa or Fiat Punto and so we’re wondering just how small, or big, the Volkswagen Up! will be. In addition, if a low-cost citycar option like the Dacia Citadine appears on the market, the Volkswagen Up might have to be more small hatch than large-ish minicar to work. Not because Dacia will produce the quality that you get with a VW, but because if you’re looking for a real city size run-around, you might not want to spend 10,000 euros.

Still, as we say, it could be a great little car for Volkswagen and replacing the Fox with something new, that still sits about 6,000 euros below the Polo, could be a needed offering in this segment for VW. There’s no word on whether it will be called the Volkswagen Lupo or not, but we wouldn’t mind something different from its current name. Just imagine a conversation between friends: “hey, I just bought a new Up!” where the exclamation mark doesn’t quite come across….

Volkswagen CrossPolo

Here are new pics of the Volkswagen CrossPolo, the all-road version of the popular Volkswagen Polo hatchback. This is actually the second generation of this vehicle and was developed after the success encounted on the Polo Fun project - a model which was produced in 5,000 units. The CrossPolo has a different look to its predecessor, and is also 15 mm higher, with a five-door body and 17-inch ‘Budapest’ design alloy wheels.

The CrossPolo costs about 16,800 euros in Europe and is available with the 1.4 petrol engine with 85, and the 1.6 TDI with 90 hp. Volkswagen Polo sedan for Russia

By Alison

Volkswagen Polo sedan

This Volkswagen Polo is headed for the Russian market and will be presented at the upcoming Moscow motor show. Sold as a Polo sedan in Russia, it will head to other markets as the Volkswagen Vento model, which we saw recently in some Vento spy shots. In Russia, it will represent the only Polo model, as the Jetta and Passat models are already market leaders, and this additional sedan rounds out an attractive offering in that market.

This Volkswagen Polo will be produced in Russia and will be launched at an equivalent price of about 10,000 euros. It will have a 16V 1.6-litre engine with 105 hp, and can be ordered with either a five-speed manual gearbox, or a six-speed Tiptronic transmission. The Polo comes with three kits: Trendline, Comfortline with ABS or the more luxury Highline, complete with ESP and side airbags.

First drawing of Volkswagen Polo Sedan: designed for emerging markets

By Alison

Volkswagen Polo Sedan

Volkswagen is working on a sedan version of its popular (and now car of the year) Volkswagen Polo, which would be built in Russia and destined for emerging and Asian markets. The design of the Volkswagen Polo sedan has been created by the same team as the hatchback model, under the guidance of Walter de Silva, but the new vehicle would include some modifications to adapt it to the different conditions in Eastern Europe and Asia.

This image shows a drawing of the Polo sedan, although reports say the vehicle will be ready in June this year. The Polo Sedan would join the Passat and Jetta with an entry level price of about 10,000 euros. While the Polo will have similar design cues, it will be different to the Volkswagen sedans being developed for the US markt. The NMS and NCS will be larger and will have hybrid drivetrains.
