Golf GTI VII: new spy shots

By Adrian

Golf GTI VII new spy shots

A new set of spy shots starring the eagerly awaited 7th generation of the Volkswagen Golf GTI has surfaced. The popular sporty hatch from VW is currently undergoing some testing on the Nurburgring, and even though the pictured mule is still wearing quite some heavy camouflage, it is believed that under the cammo the model is already equipped with the definitive bodywork: in light of that, these images allow us to understand the general proportions of the model, which should remain pretty loyal to the latest generations of the Golf.

However, more relevant changes will affect the elements of the car that do not meet the eye: the Golf VII is expected to come with the same MQB frame of the new Audi A3, which should be shared by most cars of the VW Group with transvesal engine. The adoption of this platform as well as light materials for the body work will allow the engineers to save up to 80 kg over the weight of the current generation.

Under the hood of the GTI there will be once again a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit with direct injection, that is expected to deliver about 220 hp with a very generous torque of 340 Nm. According to a “deep throat” within Volkswagen, the new Golf GTI will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.7 seconds and will reach a maximum speed of 246 km/h (153 mph).

Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet: images and info

By Adrian

Foto della nuova Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet

A few days ahead of its official unveiling at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen releases a few pictures of its long awaited Golf GTI Cabriolet, that will surely be one of the most sought-after models at the Swiss event. In the wake of the concept versions introduced at the Worthersee Tour last summer, VW launches this new convertible version of its iconic hatchback that is meant to revive the splendors of the Golf GTI Cabrio of the 80s, sporting fine details such as the red edging and GTI badge on the front grille, Denver 17″ alloys - or a set of Detroit 18″ as optional extra - chrome plated mufflers and rear diffuser.

As for the interior, the model retains all the distinctive elements of the Volkswagen Golf GTI: red inserts and stitching, multifunction steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever wrapped in leather, and ‘Jacky’ upholstery for the seats, while ‘Vienna’ leather upholstery is also available as optional. The model comes with an electrically powered fabric soft top which can be folded away in just 9.5 seconds and lifted up in about 11 seconds, even when travelling at speeds of up to 30 km/h (18 mph).

Under the typical GTI ‘open’ bonnet pulses the well-known 2.0-litre turbocharged unit equipping its hatchback counterpart, credited with an output of 211 hp and 280 Nm of peak torque. This engine can be coupled to either a 6-speed manual or automatic DSG ‘dual clutch’ gearbox, and is capable of pushing the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 7.3 seconds - versus the 6.9 seconds of the hatch - with 236 km/h (147 mph) of top speed.

VW Golf GTI Cabriolet heading to Geneva

By Adrian

Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet Concept

When we first saw the Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet Concept (pictured) at the Worthersee Tour last summer, we thought that - giant rims aside - the model had little or nothing to do with what a concept car is supposed to be. It was pretty clear that that car could have been turned into a production-ready model with just a handful of mild corrections and, according to Auto Express, this is exactly what is about to happen. Apparently, the definitive VW Golf GTI Cabriolet will be premiered at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show (March 8-18) and will be basically identical to the ‘regular’ model it is based upon, with the obvious exception of the chopped off roof. This means that the model will make use of the same 211 hp 2.0-litre TFSI engine 211 CV and DSG dual clutch transmission of the current VW Golf GTI.

Volkswagen Golf GTI by Schmidt Revolution

By Adrian

Volkswagen Golf GTI by Schmidt Revolution

German aftermarket wheel specialist Schmidt Revolution introduces a new tuning program for Volkswagen Golf GTI Mark 5. The model has been given a re-calibrated ECU, a RFI air intake and a new 70 mm performance exhaust system with twin tail pipes courtesy of Friedrich Motorsport Lichtenfels, all which contributed to boost the original 197 hp output of the standard 2.0 TFSI engine up to 271 hp.

The car also uses sport-tuned suspension, an R32 lower bumper section, front lip and sill trims painted in gloss black and, last but not least, a set of Schmidt Revolution’s own 19″ ‘Gotham’ alloy wheels, fitted with 225/35R19 Marangoni M-Power tyres.
