Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster spy shots top down

Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster spy shots roof down

In these spy shots the Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster gets its kit off for the first time, so to speak. Here we the see the SLS AMG with the roof down as the exotic convertible continues its testing. It’s been about five months since we saw the last example of spy shots of this model but these seem to prove that the Roadster is on its way to fruition.

The SLS AMG Roadster will have a traditional fabric soft top as evidenced by these pics, and while no debut date has been official announced we could see this car at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September next year. If the Mercedes SLS AMG sales are anything to go by, the open-top version will only build on that success but it won’t be introduced too early to give the first model room to grow.

A surprise under the bonnet hasn’t been completely excluded from the equation so we could see the 6.2-litre V8 aspirated engine make way for the brand new 5.5-litre B8 twinturbo. Power would stay at 570 hp but a huge boost in torque would occur from 650 Nm of the current model up to about 900 Nm. There’s as much suspense surrounding this as when the Gullwing revival first came out.

Brabus SLS AMG new-look before engine tuning arrives

By Alison

Brabus Mercedes SLS AMG

Here’s a look at the SLS AMG Brabus tuning effort, which affects the look of the car while leaving the already impressive V8 engine untouched. The Brabus SLS AMG tuning program is centred around a carbonfibre reworking of the body with new front and rear spoilers, air inlets and vents and a rear diffuser.

The supercar gets new, stylish ‘Monoblock F Platinum Edition’ alloy wheels measuring 20 inches at the front (on 275/30 tyres) and 21 inches at the rear (with 295/25 tyres). Customers can choose from Pirelli or Yokohama while the new wheels show a double spoke pattern. On the technical front Brabus has included a lighter exhaust system, taking 12 kg off the original weight (a saving of 40 percent) and modified suspension which allows for either a lowered or raised height off the ground.

The interior includes illuminated stainless-steel scuff features along the doors, a sports steering wheel, Alcantara seats and a carbonfibre or wood trim. Brabus says its engine-tuning program for the SLS AMG is on its way for those interested in getting even more power out of the 6.2-litre, 570 hp engine.

Video: SLS AMG, David Coulthard and Fifth Gear

By Alison

We always knew the Mercedes SLS AMG was not an everyday driving car, and in this video where Fifth Gear tries the Gullwing on the roads of the Isle of Man, we discover that it really only works its best at high speeds. David Coulthard lends his ‘toy’ to the team to try it out and with the roads closed not only do you have to negotiate the speed you can fly around at, but also you’re instinct to be looking out for other cars. Coulthard managed to get over 160 miles an hour and the challenge is on. Watch the video to see how it finished.

SLS AMG vs Porsche 911 Turbo vs Audi R8 V10 video group challenge

By Alison

Choosing three German supercars for this group challenge looks like it proved easy for the guys at MotoTrend. We have a face-off between the Mercedes SLS AMG, the Audi R8 V10 and the Porsche 911 Turbo. Apparently they are the vehicles best suited to venting a little stress built up in the office, and we’d have to agree just by watching the video. The scene set is the mountains of the California-Nevada border where you can get plenty of driving fun.

You can take your pick of your favourite engine noise, and then watch the video to see how it pans out. While the three cars are described as “three different answers to the same supercar question”, the Audi R8 V10 comes out as the favourite in this group test. See which you like best.

Mercedes SLS AMG UK commercial

By Alison

This video shows that the SLS AMG Gullwing has got it all. It’s sexy, fast, highly technological, fascinating and cool. There are enough tantalising engine revs to get the heart rate going and does it look good in white as well or what? The ad is the SLS AMG UK commercial and if the car wasn’t able to promote itself just fine on its own, this ad is quality marketing.

Mercedes SLS AMG test drive video

By Alison

The SLS AMG is entertaining because of its 6.2-litre engine and V8 rumble. And given its 563 horsepower, it would still be entertaining even if the handling were rubbish. Which it’s not, thankfully, as the 90-second Autocar SLS AMG test drive tells us.

It turns out that the engine is the best thing about this car, so it could really be a supercar for purists. Mercedes has thrown in a few softer options for the interior but while the Gullwing doors are cool (are they ever!), they’re actually quite impractical.

Meaning that the SLS AMG comes down to pure driving pleasure and good looks. This is not your Sunday driver supercar option. If you want a “loud, raucous experience”, here’s where the action is.

Mercedes SLS AMG 2010 German car of the year

By Alison

Mercedes SLS AMG

The Mercedes SLS AMG has been voted Germany’s car of the year by AutoBild readers, and so would we have done if we were Germans and AutoBild readers. The SLS AMG tops the rankings above the new Mercedes E-Class Cabriolet, finishing second. It’s only the fifth edition of the competition but given some of the contenders over the last few years, we can safely say that the German auto brands are some of the best in the market.

103 cars, both series models and prototypes, were in the running and this year saw Mercedes win a second time: in 2009 the Mercedes E-Class sedan was the winner. In front of Audi, BMW and Volkswagen, this could be a sign that Mercedes, at least in its own market, is enjoying the spotlight.

Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 official pics

By Alison

Mercedes SLS AMG GT3

The competition version Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 has been released, destined for the FIA GT3 class. The AMG GT3 is the first time that AMG has manufactured a competition car for sports-focused clients, which will go on sale from autumn this year, ready for 2011 racing.

The SLS AMG GT3 is fitted with carbonfibre bodywork, keeping the gull wings, and has been heavily modified to maximise aerodynamics and engine cooling procedures. The front and rear spoilers, side skirts and bumpers have all been redesigned, and we see a new bonnet and fuel distribution system with filler pipes in the C pillars taking petrol to the centrally located, 120-litre tank.

The SLS AMG GT3 is 1,990 mm wide, which is an extra 50 mm on the series version. The V8, 6.3-litre engine is the same as the 571-hp series model, but has a dry carter and will comply with FIA ‘balance of performance’ regulations, which will eventually determine the output of the race version. Transmission will be a six-speed sequential gearbox with steering wheel controls and autobloc differential. A new competition braking system is included with cast iron brakes and six pistons at the front with ABS technology.

Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 pics and details

By Alison

Mercedes SLS AMG GT3

The Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 details have been released well before originally expected at the New York Auto Show. The race version SLS AMG will not have the 5.5-litre V8 twin turbo M157 developed by AMG, but rather the 6.2-litre aspirated V8 from the SLS road version. The former should appear on the S Class models with 545 and 570, while the latter for the record, has 570 hp and 650 Nm of torque.

Significant changes to the aerodynamics have been made, including a large rear wing, front splitter and extractor. This racing SLS AMG GT3 should prove to be a real missile, and its cost could amount to 500,000 USD by the time it goes on sale in autumn this year. The official debut is still expected for the 2011 New York show, and maybe in the future the SLS Black Series could be developed on the basis of this model…

SLS AMG and Julia Stegner: Fashion as Performance in Mercedes Benz fashion week

By Alison

SLS AMG and Julia Stegner

The Mercedes Benz fashion week presents the SLS AMG and supermodel Julia Stegner, together for a photo shoot with a futuristic touch. A tad like Star Trek’s gone beserk for me, this is described as “cutting edge” work from the photographer Nick Knight. The SLS AMG is certainly of perfect enigmatic style to be used in this avant garde piece, and whether you like it or not, you’ve got to admit the final effect is dramatic. Julia Stegner discusses the work in a video after the jump.

Mercedes SLS AMG video

By Alison

Whoever produced this video of the Mercedes SLS AMG should go into action film production, if they aren’t already. The SLS AMG finds itself in a stunt of looping the inside of a tunnel at high speed through the down force generated (thanks to a whole lot of computer graphics but I’ll believe it’s capable anyway). My favourite part, though, is at the end, when the stationary car suddenly flips its Gullwing doors open. Lovely.

Audi E-Tron test drive video

By Alison

The Audi E-Tron test drive by the Los Angeles Times is seen in this video, although it’s unlikely to tell you anything you didn’t already know. We don’t get an idea of what it feels like to actually drive the E-Tron, and the torque figures quoted are likely to be those of the wheels, and not the output shaft, which has created some controversy.

The driver of this test, Dan Neil, gives us some insight into what kind of car the E-Tron is like in his written article. He says:

Like all electric cars, the batteries are the biggest concern. The e-tron uses a lithium-ion pack sourced from Sanyo with a total capacity of 53 kWh, but only about 43 kWh is usable storage. Max discharge is a healthy 230 amps. According to Krauter, the car will have two settings for regenerative braking, one normal and one sporty — which is to say, you lift off the gas and the aggressive regen will instantly slow the car down as if it had piled into a load of sand. No coasting.
