In order to figure out the possible new design of the next Porsche Cayman, it would be enough to take a look at the new Boxster and then get carried away by the imagination. These spy shots of the new Cayman show us a mule that is still pretty disguised, but it is not to difficult to spot the similarities between this prototype and the recently unveiled Porsche Boxter. This kinship gets even more evident looking at the interior of the car, which bears some resemblance with other recent models such as the 911 (991 series) and the 918 Spyder. It is fair to assume that the next Cayman, in the comparison with the latest Boxster, will just have a different rear end.
As for the engine range, the new Cayman should make use of the same 2.7 and 3.4 litre units equipping the Boxster, but they’ll probably be a little more powerful than the 265 and 315 hp boasted by Boxster’s engine line-up. Thereby, the new model should turn out to be more performing than its predecessor, also because of its new aluminum bodyshell that is arguably the most significant enhancement over the current version. Other remarkable features will include electronic power steering and torque vectoring system. the new Cayman is expected to make its debut toward the end of the current year.
In order to celebrate the 2 million fans of its Facebook page, Porsche presents a special version of its Cayman S with a white coat and 2 millions of red-tinted profile pictures on its livery. The color scheme adopted by the model is not casual, but was voted by the fans themselves who were asked to choose their favorite historic racing livery. The eventual winner of this poll was the red and white Porsche 917 K with that clinched the first victory at Le Mans for the German manufacturer with Richard Atwood and Hans Herrmann behind the wheel.
The car is obviously meant to be a tribute to each one of these dedicated fans, and will be on display at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgard until January, 27th. If you happen to be one of those 2 million fans, you can look for your face on the car’s body by accessing this dedicated webpage.
Unique Cars magazine has released a video documenting a test where they put two much revered modern cars against each other, namely the Porsche Cayman R and the Nissan GT-R. The German model can be considered as the ultimate evolution of the famous coupe line, with better performance and handling than the already brilliant ‘S’ version, whereas the Japanese contender is - simply put - the ‘car to beat’, the one that since its debut in 2007 has been continuously thrilled the car enthusiasts all world over the world with its astonishing performance as well as a price that makes all its challengers cringe in disbelief.
These two cars are quite different from each other: the Porsche uses a mid-mounted naturally aspirated engine and a rear wheel drive architecture while the Nissan unleashes the power of its V6 to the ground through an advanced all-wheel drive configuration. Therefore their clash is somewhat like putting tradition against innovation, agility against brute strength, and the outcome is not as predictable as you might think. The video is pretty self explanatory and the verdict is not based on performance figures alone, as it should be. Definitely worth watching.
French tuner DelaVilla introduces the Cayman R1, a super car based on Porsche Cayman R. The original design of the car has been completely revised in order to accentuate its sporty character: the front apron have been re-designed to include larger intakes and modern LED daytime running lights, side skirts have been added, new fenders and side panels replaced the standard parts and on the rear there is DelaVilla’s signature double pair of vertical mufflers, integrated in the rear bumper as well as a new diffuser.
The tuning makes the car 12 cm wider in its front part and 18 cm wider at the back. Besides, DelaVilla offers no less than 34 options to customize the car according to the customers’ needs. Forget your Porsche Cayenne and the Panamera - this funny car commercial shows just what an original Porsche coupĂ© can do, from snow mobile to school bus (sort of). We’ll take it with a grain of salt because nothing bigger than a kid would probably fit in the back anyway, but we still love it as quirky celebration of the possible everyday driving characteristics of a Porsche 911 or Cayman. Leaving aside the not-so-everyday price, that is…. A website has also been dedicated to the idea at porscheeveryday.com.
Here are the official pics of the Porsche Cayman R that went on display at the Los Angeles auto show taking place at the moment. The new Cayman R has a weight reduction of 55 kg (compared to the Cayman S) and gets an extra 10 hp with the six-cylinder, 3.4-litre boxer engine producing 330 hp. The 1,295 kg weight and the power make for a 0-100 time of five seconds - that gets down to 4.9 seconds with PDK clutch and 4.7 with Sport Chrono package.
Other features of the Cayman R include rear fixed spoiler and a lowered wheelbase by 20mm. It gets 19-inch wheels, black finished headlight surrounds and rear-view mirrors and black or silver Porsche script on the side. The new Cayman R will be available in Europe from February 2011 and will cost about 69,800 euros on the German market.
