Alfa MiTo Multiair

The Alfa MiTo Multiair is here and Italy’s sexiest car just got faster. The MiTo Multiair will be released on the Italian market on September 14 with prices starting at 15,800 euros for the entry level 1.4-litre engine with 105 hp.

The Multiair will make the MiTo more economical, as well as giving it extra performance while reducing CO2 emissions. The aspirated 1.4-litre will be available from debut on Monday, as will the the 135 hp turbo unit.

We’ll have to wait for early 2010 to see the 1.4-litre turbo with 170 hp, which will appear on the MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde model (four leaf clover model).

Abarth Punto Evo rendering

By Alison

Abarth Punto Evo rendering

The Fiat Grande Punto becomes Punto Evo and we should also see an Abarth Punto Evo version in the future. This rendering shows it with a Fiat 500 look to the front of the car and new air intakes. The rear probably needs a little revision, with the plastic inserts a bit out of place, but overall this take on the Abarth Punto Evo from Infomotori is not bad at all, and could be quite similar to the final version.

The interior should also get a reworking from the Centro Stile Fiat, or Fiat Style Centre, to adopt an aggressive sports look so typical of Abarth style. The engine to be used will be the new Multiair unit with a turbocharged 170 hp, while the SS version will take that figure to 200. The Abarth Punto Evo will be presented sometime in 2010.

Fiat Punto Evo

Fiat has released these new pics of the Punto Evo before its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The new version of the Grande Punto hatch has a few updates, including a revamped interior and the new Multiair engine also featured on the Alfa MiTo.

With new Euro 5 laws being released today (more on that later) the Multiair joins a range of engines that comply with the new norms, including methane and LPG fuel, and a 1.3-litre Multijet with 95 hp. All the Euro 5 versions will have Start&Stop technology. We’ll have some live pics from the Frankfurt Motor Show, and below you can read all the details in the press release.

Fiat Punto Evo: name change to accompany restyling?

By Julia

Fiat Grande Punto restyling

The restyled Fiat Grande Punto will be marketed as the Punto Evo, as we had predicted Thursday. The renewed vehicle from Turin will be the subject of a profound aesthetic makeover, concentrated mainly on the front end and the interior; the rear fenders will also be changed, with different side scoops. The strange thing, though, is that it is present in the same price listings as the Punto Classic and the current Grande Punto.

And yes, this is because this last one, the Grande Punto, will continue to be produced in the same way, with prices reduced by some thousands of Euros and a engine series reduced to the bare bones: all the remaining “survivors” will be fitted with the Euro 4 engine. Unlike the Punto Evo, which will be proposed with a Euro 5 engine equipped with Multiair (the presence of the 1.4-liter engine with 105 hp is almost certain) and, over the course of 2010, with the 900cc SGE.

Autobild tests the Fiat 1.4 Multiair

By Alison

Autobild has tested the 1.4-litre turbo Multiair engine at 165 hp and have been very, very impressed by the performance. The quality of this technological innovation is superior, and won points for its speedy response (at 2,000 rpm) and immediate acceleration.

The Fiat Bravo is equipped with the Multiair, giving it almost a sports style. The motor is quiet and is also happy to run at higher revs. The first Multiair engine to debut will be the 1.4 litre, 135 hp version to appear on the Alfa MiTo in September. It is reported as having an average consumption of five litres for every 100 km. By the end of 2009, other versions os 170 and 105 hp will be available.

Autobild also examined the 0.9 SGE (Small Gasoline Engine) in the turbo version, accredited with 69 hp, a fuel consumption of 3.4 litres per 100 km/hr and only 80 grams of CO2 emissions every 1000 km. It will debut in 2012.

Alfa Romeo Milano spy video

By Alison

Here is a spy video of the much anticipated Alfa Romeo Milano. The video was taken as the new Alfa hatchback undergoes testing at the Nurburgring. After many spy shots of the Alfa Milano, the video gives more of an idea as to the size and shape of the car, larger than the current 147 that it is replacing.

Of note is also the engine noise: a nice rumble. The Alfa Milano will feature some new engines, including the 1.4 litre MultiAir and, most likely, a 2.0 litre MultiJet twin turbo at 220 hp.

Alfa Romeo Milano spy shots and Frankfurt show debut

By Alison

Alfa Romeo Milano: le ultimissime foto spia

The Alfa Romeo Milano, heir to the company’s “veteran” 147, has been captured again in these new spy shots in testing that is continuing before the Milano’s debut at the Frankfurt show in three months’ time.

The camouflage is still quite heavy, but intuition tells us the Milano will share some stylistic elements with the smaller and more recent, MiTo model. The new family feeling design is likely to be on full display, with the Milano showing some added comfort features.

The camouflage doesn’t allow for any guesses as to the rear of the car, but the for the rest it will be slightly longer and wider than the 147 predecessor. A C-Evo platform will be used, and a new engine range will appear, taking in the 1750 TBi and the new Multiair turbo already announced on the MiTo.

Alfa Romeo MiTo gets new 1.4 MultiAir engine and start-stop system

By Alison

Alfa Romeo MiTo

After a year on the market and more than 60,000 units sold, the Alfa Romeo MiTo gets an update, with a technological debut of the MultiAir 1.4 litre turbo petrol engine. The new engine increases power and torque by ten and 15 percent respectively, but actually reduces fuel consumption and emissions by ten percent.

The MiTo 1.4 MultiAir will be available in three power steps: 105 hp, 135 hp and 170 hp with five and six-speed transmissions. The 105 and 135 hp models will be available across the MiTo range, while the 170 hp will only appear on the “Quadrifoglio Verde” (four-leaf clover) version to appear later on. The usual technology will be included, incorporating the DNA system, while the start-stop system debuts with the MultiAir.

Fiat: Europe's lowest emission brand

By Alison

Fiat 500C - immagini ufficiali

Fiat’s environmental qualifications have been confirmed again this year, registering for a second year running the lowest CO2 emissions of the ten automobile brands in Europe. The figures are for 2008 sales at an average of 133.7 g/km (in 2007 figures were 137.3 g/km).

The figures come from JATO, world leader in research and consultancy in the automotive field. Fiat is at the top of the ranking and is followed by Peugeot (138.1 g/km), Citroën (142.4 g/km), Renault (142.7 g/km), Toyota (144.9 g/km), Ford (147.8 g/km), Opel/Vauxhall (151.1 g/km), Volkswagen (158.8 g/km), BMW (160.6 g/km) and Mercedes (185.0 g/km).

Fiat Group also precedes PSA, Renault, Toyota and Hyundai-Kia in the manufacturers group category. New initiatives and projects such as the Multiair, PUR-O2 range and LPG models should only further improve these results in the future.

Fiat Powertrain, managing director Altavilla on twin cylinder and Multiair for 2009

By Alison

Alfredo Altavilla

2009 could be the year for fiat Powertrain with features emerging such as the two-cylinder turbo, turbo-charged 1.8L, dry twin-clutch, automatic transmission and last but definitely not least, the Multijet II. Alfredo Altavilla, managing director of Fiat Powertrain, has much to be positive about.

He explains how they have developed an engine such as the SGE that still complies with Euro 5 anf Euro 6 anti-pollution legislation, which will come into effect in 2014. In the aspirated, turbo and natural gas Fiats, all the 900cc engines will have CO2 emissions of less than 100 grams per kilometre.

Multiair technology is the apple of Fiat’s eye, which, with its valve control, takes power to levels comparable to the Multijet. A power range of between 65 and 105 hp will be on offer. 2009 will see the second generation Multijet for Fiat, making this an exiciting year for Fiat’s powerhouse.
