New Mercedes SLK

The new Mercedes SLK is doing its best to follow in the footsteps of the original and highly popular model, and Mercedes is doing a good job of keeping things luxurious while fun to drive. The pioneering folding hard top model gets the new fangled Magic Sky Control tech which has tinted glass which can automatically adjust to variations in sunlight via a button on the interior, and a design similar to the SLS AMG up front. This means you’re going to look awfully hot in terms of style, while enjoying the balmy weather with the roof down, or keeping it up and tinted when it’s hot.

The cabin also takes on more SLS features with a multi-function screen and ambient lighting around the arm rest and centre panel between the seats. The SLK also gets the Mercedes Air Scarf neck-warming feature, completing the whizz-bang electronics of the new model. The model launching this month will be available in SLK 200, SLK 250 and SLK 350 versions. The first two come with a 1.8-litre unit with 184 and 204 hp. Acceleration to 100 km/hr is seven and 6.6 seconds respectively with top speeds of 237 and 243 km/hr.

The SLK 350 is the sportier model and has a six-cylinder, 3.5-litre unit with 306 hp. It takes 5.6 seconds to reach 100 km/hr and has a top speed of 250 km/hr. Options include the Dynamic Handling package with adjustable suspension (standard and sports modes available), and a vectoring brake. On the German market, the SLK 200 has a starting price of nearly 39,000 euros. The SLK 250 starts at 44,200 euros and the 350 model kicks off at 52,300 euros.

2012 Mercedes SLK drawings revealed

2012 Mercedes SLK drawings

These drawings show the trademark filings for the new Mercedes SLK convertible model, set to arrive for spring this year. We’ve already seen the new SLK in a leaked video and pics and these drawings give us an additional, general idea as to the design modifications, including more clean cut lines.

The Mercedes SLK should come with an extensive engine line-up, but although we can probably expect an AMG version, none of the diesel rumours have been confirmed yet. According to reports, we will probably see the new SLK presented this month in Detroit, or at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March.

New Mercedes SLK revealed: pics and video

By Alison

The new Mercedes SLK has got an early release over the internet via this leaked video and the images below. The 2012 SLK model will be ready for sales from spring in 2011, and comes with a new look, technology and an extensive engine range. The car will go on show at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show and will show-off an aggressive new styling with a larger, CLS-like front grille, mini rear spoiler and LED lights.

The rest of the technological package will include the Air Scarf warm air flow system from Mercedes, Magic Sky Control roof darkening technology and adaptive headlights. On the mechanical front the Mercedes SLK will probably get a full range of engines including the 1.8-litre CGI with 204 hp for the SLK 250, and the 3.5-litre V6 CGI with 306 hp for the SLK 350. In 2012 we should get a new entry-level SLK 200 with a 1.8 CGI with 184 hp. SLK AMG versions and the 250 CDI models haven’t been confirmed yet.

Mercedes SLK Magic Sky Control

By Alison

Mercedes SLK Sky Control

These pics show more of the new Mercedes SLK as the company releases details on the “Magic Sky Control” technology of the folding metal roof. With a basic function of a standard sun roof, Mercedes is using electrochromic glass in order to reduce the internal temperature of the cabin. What does that mean? Basically at the flick of a switch, you can darken the glass, blocking UV and infrared light. Mercedes claims that the technology means that the internal components of the cabin can be kept at temperatures up to 10 degrees cooler than a standard sunroof.

It’s probably some helpful technology in Death Valley where Mercedes took the SLS to prove its point, but we’ve got our doubts about how much we’d use this here in Europe (assuming we’re in the market for an SLS, of course). Aside from the jargon associated with the “Magic Sky Control” (no-one came up with a better name?), these pictures are interesting for the glimpse we get of the SLK interior. While camouflaged, it looks like we’ll be getting a new instrument set-up and a design similar to that of the SLS dash. We could see the new Mercedes SLK at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show as testing is well underway to completion.

Mercedes SLK spy shots with new glass roof

Mercedes SLK spy shots new glass roof

The 2011 Mercedes SLK marks the third generation of this model and here we see new SLK spy shots. The big thing to concentrate on here is the metal roof mechanism which has been the defining characteristic of this model since it first appeared. Mercedes has dubbed the new technology Magic Sky Control which uses electrochromic glass (for more on electrochromism, see Wikipedia). Using this new technology the new Mercedes SLK will have a roof with a central glass panel as the main change for the updated model.

Spy shots: 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLK AMG

By Giorgio

Spy shots: 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLK AMG

Feast your eyes on these new spy shots of the next generation 2011 Mercedes SLK; an amazing car which will probably use a naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V8, with a jump of 100-plus horsepower, from the current 330 to a possible 476. As for the interior, we can expect it to take design cues from the Mercedes-Benz SLS, with the typical AMG enhancements which, of course, mean sport steering wheel, sport seats and carbon fibre accents. Stay tuned for more updates!

Mercedes SL spy shots

Mercedes SL spy shots

These spy shots of the Mercedes SL show the next generation which will turn up in only 2012. But testing has already been underway for the new Mercedes spider, which should be getting a complete overhaul. The Mercedes SL is still covered in very heavy camouflage, meaning we can’t get an accurate idea of how it will look.

According to some reports, both the Mercedes SL and SLK will inherit some of the design features from the classic Mercedes SLS, but we can’t verify that with these shots. However, we do get some tantalising technical information: the new SL should be wider and lower than the current model, gaining some improvements in aerodynamics and drive style.

It will have a totally new spaceframe chassis, and will have a specialist suspension system with an aluminium double triangle both at the front and rear. We should also see an exciting new engine range with new V6 and V8 units, both aspirated and turbo models, with CGI direct injection. Both performance and fuel consumption should be improved, and eventually we should also see a Mercedes SL hybrid version with lithium ion batteries.

Mercedes SLK or baby SLS AMG spy shots

By Alison

Mercedes SLK spy shots

This Mercedes SLK spy shot could also be a baby SLS AMG first look, according to World Car Fans. The spy shot, similar to previous mules seen testing, was originally considered to be the 2012 Mercedes SLK, but since announcements that a smaller SLS AMG will be produced, that may not be the case.

The idea is that what was once destined to be the stuff of the SLK could in fact be dedicated to the new, smaller SLS AMG, which will appear in the product line-up above the SLK55 AMG, much like the Gullwing is placed above the SL63. Don’t expect the baby SLS AMG to be a smaller version than the current one, as rumours say that the gullwing doors will be replaced by a more economical option.

That doesn’t help to identify these spy shots, then, because if we were looking for the signature doors, we clearly have to reconsider. Alternatively, these spy shots could just be the new SLK redesigned in a more classic style. We can’t say though, that the idea of the baby SLS AMG from the guys at WCF isn’t tantalising all the same.

New Mercedes SLK spy shots

By Alison

If these pics were anything to go by, this Mercedes SLK would be off to the panel beaters, but instead these spy shots show some heavy camouflage to protect the SLK from spying eyes. No definite news is available as to the date of its presentation, though some sources have been talking the end of 2012.

While it’s likely we’ll see a debut before that date, looking at these pics we still get some idea as the modifications in style. The nose looks to dip less and the headlights look sharper in design, conforming with recent developments in Mercedes style. Other changes are the LED lights, and new rear vision mirrors.

The engine range appears to provide some tantalising news, with talk of the new turbo charged four-cylinder, although after rumours of the powerful 3.5 litre V6 twin turbo, all eyes are on the AMG version. It’s possible that the next generation SLK will sit somewhere between the 6.2 litre V8 aspirated engine, and the next, smaller, turbo models.

Mercedes Slk: camouflage hiding a glass roof?

By Alison

Mistery Mercedes Slk

This curious Mercedes Slk with its unusual camouflage has been explained by LeftLane. At least, their theory for this version is the re-designing of the boot to accommodate the new rigid roof, possibly in crystal glass, as the prototype being tested has a transparent insert substituting metal.

We’re doubtful. If they’re working on a new hard-top, why not concentrate on the hatchback and a different profile? Any glass roof is unlikely to be introduced before 2010, so theories will abound until we get the final word from Mercedes on this Slk and its panorama roof.

Mercedes Slk: reaching 500.000 sales

By Alison

Mercedes Slk I e II

12 years after its debut the Mercedes Slk is celebrating 500,000 cars sold: a prestigious achievement favoured by the German market (with two thirds of the total not exiting German borders) and by the refined exclusivity of the folding roof, distinctive element separating it from the competition.

The second edition of the Sportlich, Leicht and Kompakt (sport, lightweight and compact), recently rejuvenated by the specific restyling, has reached the level of 190,000 vehicles while the Kompressor cements its position as the favourite car - already at half the expected sales.
