Mercedes B 25 AMG: spy shots

By Adrian

Mercedes B 25 AMG spy shots

AMG’s debut in the C-segment is anticipated by these spy shots, picturing one of the first mules of Mercedes B-Class 25 AMG. The car will be the first compact SUV with an AMG badge and one of the few with all wheel drive, thanks to the new MFA modular platform. The model will be equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4 cylinder unit delivering 320-350 hp coupled with a dual clutch transmission. Obviously there are no official performance figures to speak of, but it is safe to say that the car will probably have a 0-100km/h sprint time of about 5 seconds and a top speed in the 250 km/h area, just like Audi RS3 Sportback, its main competitor.

Judging by these pictures, Mercedes B 25 AMG will probably have a re-designed front bumper with larger air intakes, an exhaust system with 2 or 4 mufflers and big alloy wheels, fitted with a more performing braking system. A new rear bumper with integrated diffuser is also expected to appear on the final version. The model should make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2012.

Mercedes F 125! concept at Frankfurt Motor Show

Mercedes at 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show

Six Mercedes models will get their official debut on local turf at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show with everything from the new B-Class, to the C63 AMG Coupé Black Series and a new concept the F 125!. The Mercedes B-Class has already been previewed with pics and details, but it will be interesting to check it out in person and see where Mercedes can take the compact MPV segment.

The new Mercedes B-Class will also be our chance to check out the MFA platform which will be the basis for future front-wheel drive models like the A-Class. On a more exotic front but with a dash of practicality is Mercedes’ first diesel spider, the SLK 250 CDI.

The model brings a 2.1-litre twinturbo diesel engine to the Mercedes SLK, which gets 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque. It will carve out an ecological space in the Mercedes spider range, as at the other end of the scale the new SLK 55 AMG model also gets its official release.

2012 Mercedes B-Class videos

By Alison

We’ve got all the details and pics of the new Mercedes B-Class and here it is in video for us. Up until now, we’ve discussed the new front-wheel drive platform, revamped interior and larger size, but we haven’t really looked at whether the design will actually appeal.

It’s often an aspect overlooked when it comes to compact MPVs because they are, by nature, practical vehicles not really intended to be beautiful. The new Opel Meriva stepped things up a little in the design department, adding its book-hinged doors for a novelty, but we’ve got to admit that the new Mercedes B-Class is quite attractive for this segment.

What’s more, the new B-Class fits nicely into the Mercedes family right now, too. We would have said that the MPV segment was an unlikely one for a little extra competition, but the new B-Class could provide just that. Four engines are available at launch date, with two petrol and two diesels, and a six-speed manual is on offer, or an option 7G-DTC gearbox. See after the jump for more details on the new B-Class, including a look at its new entertainment system.

New Mercedes B-Class unveiled

New Mercedes B-Class official pics

The new Mercedes B-Class gets revealed before its 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show debut as we had expected when the new B-Class exterior pic leaked recently. The new compact MPV is the first of Mercedes’ new front-wheel drive platform vehicles to appear and will be followed sometime next year by the new Mercedes A-Class.

Don’t let Mercedes lull you into thinking that the new B-Class is an “inferior” car despite its more budget segment than luxury sedans or superfast coupes. The new B-Class has been thoroughly redesigned, particularly on the inside, to provide a more practical, comfortable and roomier model.

The new generation is bigger than the previous model, both longer and lower, and to drive home the message that this isn’t the Mercedes for those who can’t afford the real deal, the company claims that rear passenger room is larger than both the E-Class and S-Class Mercedes’. Boot capacity is 666 litres, which is an extra 121 litres than previously making this quite the family tourer.

Mercedes B-Class first pic

By Alison

New_Mercedes_B-Class_first_exterior_pic

We’ve already seen the interior pics of the new Mercedes B-Class, but could this be the first official look at the new exterior? The model is the main highlight expected from Mercedes at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and if this is an official shot, we wouldn’t be surprised to see more from the company before the event starts in September.

The new B-Class compact MPV should be 4.36 metres long, 1.79 m wide and 1.56 m tall which will make it longer and shorter than the outgoing model. The look changes slightly and we should see sportier, more sculpted sides as part of Mercedes’ new design path, and on the technical front a new 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine will debut in two powersteps of 122 and 156 hp, and there will also be a new 1.8-litre diesel engine with 109 and 136 hp.

The new B-Class should prove quite technological with the 7G-DCT seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and start&stop. Mercedes’ new front-wheel drive architecture will debut, which is destined for use on the future Mercedes A-Class, CLC and CLK. The Mercedes B-Class is expected to have its market debut early 2012.

Mercedes to boost production against BMW and Audi

By Alison

New Mercedes B-Class interior pics

The battle amongst the premium German car brands doesn’t just happen on the luxury front, it appears. You can have all the Bose sound systems and “air scarf” technology you want, but at the end of the quarter, it’s the sales figures that really talk. After trailing BMW and Audi, the latter who robbed Mercedes of the second spot for luxury cars in the US market, Mercedes-Benz has announced it plans to increase volume to compete with its rivals.

Deliveries for the first half of the year are positive, but Mercedes trails the other big two - BMW and Audi. Mercedes registered a 9.7 percent sales increase to 611,000 vehicles, behind BMW’s 18 percent rise to 690,000 and Audi’s 18 percent rise to 653,000.

Releasing its new range of compact cars, of which the Mercedes B-Class will be one, the company plans to build a new production plant in Hungary and expand operations in both China and the US. For the second half of this year, Mercedes has raised sales targets by just 50,000 vehicles, compared to BMW’s 100,000, and more capacity would have contributed to increased sales. CEO Dieter Zetsche says:

We are striving for the highest profitability of the three and we have reason to believe we will get there. We clearly take on the race for volume. Mid-term, long-term, we are sure that we will be in the hunt for the No. 1 position.

New Mercedes B-Class interior pics

Does this look like the kind of place you want to be? Mercedes is guessing so as it releases the first interior pics of its more budget model - the new Mercedes B-Class. To be officially revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, we still don’t know what the exterior will look like, but the interior so far seems practical, comfortable and relatively well equipped for one of the not-so-plush models in the Mercedes line-up.

Some of the interior details reflect design elements we’re now seeing across the entire range, like the aeroplane-style round air vents from the SLS AMG and a CLS steering wheel design. We get a glossy aluminium trim on the inside, ergonomic steering wheel and dash commands and a series of personalisation options, like Artico hand-worked leather.

We’re expecting Mercedes to release more before the Frankfurt show, and we’ll have live pics from the event in September when the new B-Class release date rolls around.

New Mercedes-Benz B-Class

Mercedes B-Class tech teasers

While Mercedes hasn’t released any official pics of the new B-Class, we’ve seen plenty of spy shots, but here we are with some more technical details of the upcoming model. The Mercedes B-Class will be the W246 second generation, and will measure 4.359 m long, 1.786 wide and 1.557 tall. That should give it quite a rakish profile compared to the outgoing generation, due to its additional length up 90 mm, and lower height by 50mm.

New materials used should reduce the weight, and a new range of four-cylinder engines will appear, with direct injection and turbo compressors. The B-Class will also get a new diesel engine, dual-clutch transmissions (manual and automatic), and new drive assist programs. The new petrol M270 engine is a 1.6-litre, four-cylinder unit which will use next-generation direct injection already seen on the new V6 and V8 models.

Two powersteps for the new B-Class engine will be available: either 122 hp with 200 Nm, or 156 hp with 250 Nm. The OM651 is the new 1.8-litre diesel unit to be used on the B 180 CDI (109 hp and 250 Nm), and on the B 200 CDI (136 hp and 300 Nm). The transmission will be the dual-clutch 7G-DCT, all versions will come with Start&Stop, and a six-speed manual will also be on offer for the traditionalists. We will see the new Mercedes B-Class at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, before sales start in November.

Mercedes A-class and B-class for 2011

By Alison

mercedes classe a 2011

After recent news as to the direction the future Mercedes A-class and B-class, we take a look at the style of the next generation to appear in 2011, with a reconstruction of the three-door A-class above, and the possible technological solutions that will be included.

It appears the two models, despite current sales success, will take on a completely difference aspect to the one we know today. The aim is not so much to appeal to a younger age group, but to appeal to drivers who enjoy a bit of fun at the wheel of even everyday cars. The second goal will be to lower further emissions, which are already among the lowest of the entire range.

The B-class will take on a lower roof and a series of stylistic changes that should reflect some of the ideas launched with the BlueZero concept presented in Detroit in January. In the line of fire from the competition is the Audi A3 and the BMW Series 1, and some surprising technological solutions could give Mercedes an edge.
