Mercedes to close Maybach in 2013

By Adrian

Apparently, Mercedes-Benz will dismiss its luxury brand Maybach in 2013. According to Autocar.co.uk - which quotes internal sources - the German group has come to this decision after a long deliberation over the future of the brand, which was brought back to life in 2002 following an almost 60-years long hiatus. Maybach’s ‘57′ and ‘62′ saloon models, based on the quite obsloete S-Class W220, have now reached the end of their commercial lives, and would need more than a simple re-styling to become competitive on the modern market again. In light of the poor response of the public toward the revamped brand, Mercedes-Benz just doesn’t seem interested in doing that.

However, the German manufacturer won’t leave the luxury sedan market behind as the new S-Class W222 will be made available in three different versions, one of which should end up adopting the historic S600 Pullman tag. This last model will be the one in charge of carrying the 3-pointed star flag in the most exclusive luxury segment, offering top-notch finishing and comfort to compete against the most garish models from Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Maybach Zeppelin new pics

Maybach Zeppelin new pics

Maybach has released a new gallery of its Zeppelin super luxury model. It is equipped with the 6.0-litre V12 twin turbo with 640 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque. Based on the Maybach 57 S and 62 S, the Zeppelin’s same engine produces 28 hp more than the standard versions.

The Maybach Zeppelin now appears in two lengths, one at 5.7 metres and the other at 6.2 metres. And when we say “super-luxury”, we’re not kidding. While features include 20-inch chrome wheels, two-tone paint job and Zeppelin lettering, you also get champagne flutes and for a mere 4,000 euros more, a specially created perfume for the interior.

The Maybach Zeppelin will be produced in just 100 units, with prices starting at 406,000 euros for the 57 Zeppelin (shorter version) and 473,200 euros for the longer 62 Zeppelin. Do you think that the boat in the background comes with it?

Maybach 62: spy shots

By Alison

Maybach 62 facelift

These spy shots come from the testing of the Maybach 57 and 62 sedans which has already started, as the brand hopes to reach the level of excellence pre-supposed by its price.

The modifications seem mostly concentrated at the front of the vehicle, with final designs planning the addition of LED head lights. Maybach is undergoing a revival of image, as seen by this Maybach Zeppelin special series, to debut at the Frankfurt motor show.

Bugatti and Bentley: a joint project for a super sedan

By Alison

This car is perfectly balanced between aboslute power and total exclusivity. If you want to get excited about details, the leather comes from Crewe, in Cheshire, the tailors are French in origin but German adopted, and will work on high quality stitching. But to get back to the overall importance, this future Bugatti sedan will be based on the platform destined for the next Arnage.

Rolls Royce and Maybach are on notice then as from 2012 an alternative contestant will be on the scene. This project comes from the collaboration from two impressive brands, both noted for their extreme luxury. It’s likely that similarities will include the chassis and a W16 engine, but there’s no word as to whether diesel will be adopted.

Maybach: the end seems near

By Alison

Maybach Landaulet

146 units in 2007 was only a tenth of the initial sales forecasts: not even the introduction of the Landaulet helped to increase volume.

Dieter Zetsche, Managing Director of Daimler, comments with ill-concealed disappointment at the sparse results produced in the last year by Maybach, and especially as compares to the growth of Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Speaking with The Car Connection, the manager said however, that the glass is half full, given that the costs of developing the 57 and 62 are less than those of the competition. The close relationship with the Mercedes Class S, in fact, allows for wider earnings margins.

The € 900,000 Maybach Landaulet

By Luca

Maybach Landaulet

Maybach has announced the production version of the Maybach Landaulet - the semi-convertible ultra-luxurious limousine, with a 620 ps V12 bi-turbo engine and a € 900,000 price tag.

Probably Maybach hopes that such an over the top car will save the brands’ sagging sales. The first deliveries will start in the autumn of 2008.
