Just in case we don’t see the BMW M1 Hommage hybrid at the Frankfurt motor show, we though we’d run our Hommage gallery again. Apparently given BMW’s infatuation with SUVs, a new commitment to being green is needed.
So after withdrawing from Formula One, we might also see a hybrid concept of the M1 Hommage prototype. In addition, after the success of and fascination with the Audi R8 and the Mercedes SLS, BMW is yet to present a car that equally captures the imagination.
The problem won’t be resolved however, if this sustainable sports concept remains just that, and never makes it to production. The Frankfurt show might shed some light.
A purported insider from the BMW ranks has revealed details about a green supercar that will be based on the M1 Hommage. The BMW eco-friendly supercar could even be on the market by 2012.
The car is set to show off all of BMW’s environmental qualifications, perhaps giving this segment the luxurious touch it needs. Technology used on this vehicle could include stop-start systems, direct injection and recharge braking.
The source is strangely silent though, on the engine range to be utilised, citing a number of models that could be employed, and even including the possibility of a hybrid model. We could take this as an evolutionary moment in the supercar sector, which to stay alive, is going to need some new, environmentally-friendly life. A supercar model will also help BMW compete with the likes of the Audi R8 and the Mercedes Slr.

“We have the know-how, the right engines and the facilities to produce it: I don’t see why another M1 can’t one day debut on the market.” And the skies are open. This declaration from Herbert Diess, BMW board member, to Car, has had the same devastating effect as an explosion, with inventive flames and fantasises bouncing around the net. The guys over at Leftlane have exploited the movement to create the first hypothetical renderings.
The lines faithfully follow the style of the noble parentage, with some elements taken from the M1 Hommage concept car. The flat bonnet shapes the rest of the car, finishing in a smooth rear, well harmonised with a small spoiler. As affirmed by Diess, the engine range will include higher levels of power, possibly seeing a twin-turbo petrol (such as the 3.0 or the V8 4.4), or a substitute for the V10 equipped with two higher powered turbines.
The English over at CAR seem convinced that the BMW concept with central engine, the M1 Hommage will be produced. “We have the necessary know-how, the right engines and the appropriate infrastructure to manufacture a car of this type,” Herbert Diess, BMW board member, has said.
In addition, the June edition of the magazine will be dedicated to the M1 Hommage, with an entire exclusive photograph spread and some details about the car. More precise information on the production schedule and engine range (composed of three units) will be revealed. The lighter bodywork should also be discussed, as will the wing shaped doors, and why the car can’t be called M1.
At the Concorso d’Eleganza 2008 at the Villa d’Este, BMW has presented its M1 “Hommage”, a tribute to the 30-year-old unforgettable supercar, designed by Giugiaro.
This concept is set to be a synthesis of the shape and proportions of the 1978 M1 and the current BMW design style. In the first images of the gallery you can see side-by-side the original M1 and the Hommage: a more extreme form, wider in the body, the bonnet “hump” more distinct and generally a decidedly larger car.
The M1 Hommage seems destined to remain a pure exercise in style, but we can already imagine the clamour of fans of the brand if a production followed.
