Live pics: tuning at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show

By Alison

The 2011 Geneva Motor Show features plenty of tuning delights from the gorgeous Novitec Rosso Ferrari 458 Italia to the ABT Audi R8 and Audi A7. You can see them in this live gallery from Geneva, and plenty of the models dedicated to BMW: from Hamann, AC Schnitzer and our colleagues have thrown in Alpina for good measure (although not strictly a tuner but please don’t shoot the publisher). The various tuned BMW models including everything from the Z4 to the X6.

The Mercedes tuned models on display are care of Carlsson, including a very sporty model dedicated to the SL. Hamann has played with the Mercedes SLS, and the Porsche Cayenne, too. Other Porsche models get treatment from the historic brands of RUF and Sportec, with the RUF electric Porsche 911 on show. Check them all out in the huge gallery below.

New Lancia range from Chrysler live at Geneva

Lancia: la nuova gamma - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

Thanks to Chrysler, Lancia has launched an entire range at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, finally providing a complete and comprehensive offering that no longer has much to do with the origins of the Lancia brand, but that might at least give it some added relevance. The models on show at Geneva are: the new Lancia Ypsilon, the brand’s small flag bearer of late, the Lancia Delta model year 2011 concept, the Lancia Thema, the Voyager, the Lancia Flavia and the Flavia Cabrio.

The Lancia Ypsilon has a load to bear for such a small model and the update version is hoped to continue the success of this 25-year old model. It will be on sale starting from June in most European markets, and will appear as a Chrysler model in the UK and Ireland from September.

The Lancia Flavia models are currently considered concept models but are only just short of production, according to Olivier Francois. He says that if the response is positive, the Flavia models could be into production within six months. The Lancia gallery below live from Geneva shows all the razzle dazzle of the presentation… but will they pull this off?

Land Rover Range_E live at Geneva motor show

Range_E - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

The Land Rover Range_E is on show at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and presents the technology the Land Rover group is testing for its future diesel-hybrid plug-in expected for 2013. The Range Rover Sport based Range_E is equipped with a three-litre V6 diesel engine and an electric motor with eight-speed ZF automatic transmission.

The Range_E has 339 hp and a top speed of 193 km/hr. The 69 kW engine and 14.2 kW lithium ion batteries make for a range of 32 km in electric mode, or 1,112 km in total. Fuel consumption is about 3.36 l/100 km and CO2 emissions produced are 89 g/km. That’s all very impressive stuff and it’s time that the brands with big SUVs started rolling out this technology to help the planet. The Range-E appeared with both the three-door and five-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque, and the Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition.

Car designers of the future: IED Abarth Scorp-Ion live at Geneva

By Alison

IED Abarth Scorp-Ion

This Abarth-based concept seen live at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show is a design work from students at Turin’s IED institute. The model has been called Scorp-Ion and is part of a project by seven students enrolled in a Master of Arts in Transportation Design. It is a two-seater coupé model 401 cm long, 109 cm wide and 119 cm tall.

With a wheel base of 235 cm, the Scorp-Ion uses four electric motors per wheel driven by lithium ion batteries. They have been strategically placed behind the seats and under the car floor to keep the centre of gravity as low as possible. The Abarth Scorp-Ion project was supervised by Luca Borgogno, Senior Designer for Pininfarina, and Luigi Giampaolo, designer for Maserati.

Seat IBX Concept live at Geneva

By Alison

Seat IBX Concept

Looking similar in some design elements to the Skoda VisionD Concept we saw live at Geneva is the Seat IBX prototype. After the Tribu Concept was seen about four years ago, this is the second attempt at a Seat SUV. The compact IBX actually fits into the crossover category and is another example of the fusion between an SUV and a coupé. It’s a good looking, sporty car with a high waist line and dynamic lines. It has a hybrid drivetrain set-up but other details are scarce at the moment.

Apart from the concept elements like the whacky front headlights which would eventually disappear in a production model, we’d be interested to see if Seat could make space in its range for one of these. The compact SUV/crossover segment is becoming more competitive, but if Seat made something like this in a practical but sporty style for a younger market, we could see some models being sold.

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 and 308 restyling at Geneva

By Alison

Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 e 308 Restyling - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

The Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 has been presented at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, along with the Peugeot 308 restyling for the hatchback. The 3008 Hybrid4 is the pride and joy of Peugeot at the moment, being a first for the French company and the first diesel-hybrid model on the market.

The model is equipped with Peugeot’s 2.0 HDI 163 hp engine, and a 37 hp electric motor which produces power at the rear axle. Total power is therefore 200 hp and torque measures 500 Nm. The 3008 Hybrid4 can be used in all-wheel drive or all-electric mode. Fuel consumption is about 3.8 l/100 km and CO2 emissions are down to 99 g/km, thanks also to the Start&Stop system and the automatic, six-speed transmission.

The 3008 Hybrid4 will go on sale as a limited edition in 2011 at a price of about 41,000 euros. We’re impressed by the technology and would like to see more of these kinds of cars on the market, especially at lower prices to encourage mass market appeal. But while it’s definitely an impressive proposition from Peugeot, it’s unlikely to contribute significantly to the re-branding going on at the French company right now.

Saab 9-5 SportCombi live at 2011 Geneva Motor Show

By Alison

Saab - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

The Saab 9-5 SportCombi has been unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and seeing these kinds of models, we’re hoping the company will be able to keep its head above water and keep producing some lovely cars. The model appeared alongside the Saab PhoeniX Concept which looks more like a sculpture than a vehicle. It’s purely a design concept at the moment, and could herald some of the features we’ll be seeing on Saab models in the future.

Another model on show is the Saab 9-3 Griffin. The 9-3 restyling applies to all models in the line-up: the Sport Sedan, Sporthatch, Cabriolet and 9-3X. It comes with an updated two-litre Biopower petrol engine with direct injection. It comes in two options of 163 hp and 320 Nm, or 220 hp and 350 Nm of torque. The Biopower label refers to the Bio-ethanol E85 option available. The diesel range comes in the 1.9 TTid models with 130, 160 or 180 hp. Saab XWD all-wheel drive is available for the petrol options.

We love what they’ve done with the design for the Saab 9-5 SportCombi, though. It’s elegant, well-proportioned and is definitely a worthy competitor to the German models around. The same engine range of the sedan model is carried across, but we don’t have any boot capacity details, which is a shame. The Saab models on show also came with the new IQon entertainment system and its various applications. It’s too early to say that Saab is looking healthy again, but we like what we see.

Skoda VisionD Concept and Fabia Monte Carlo live at 2011 Geneva Motor Show

By Alison

Skoda - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

Live at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show Skoda brought some lovely ladies to back up the couple of hot models on display. The Skoda VisionD Concept is on show but its technical details haven’t been released. It’s a glimpse at the design future of the Skoda C segment vehicles and seems to take some inheritance from the 1999 Seat Leon (particularly in the squared-off headlights and front design), but with a number of modern touches including the trendy, coupé-like rear.

The VisionD Concept is an attractive mix of striking angles and curves and its wheels, with their propeller design, contribute to the minimalist look. It appears next to the Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo edition which celebrates 110 years of racing and sports activity for the company. It’s got a hot-hatch style with twin-tone black and red colours. It will go on sale with two engine options: the 1.2 TSI with 105 hp and the 1.6 TDI with 105 hp. They cost 16,040 and 18,700 euros respectively and come with a five-speed manual gearbox. The new Skoda logo was also revealed live at the Geneva Show, adorning the front of the VisionD Concept.

Rolls Royce 102EX Concept live at Geneva Motor Show

By Alison

Rolls Royce 102EX - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

The Rolls Royce 102EX Concept seen at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show is the company’s first splash in electric car exploration. It’s part of the Phantom Experimental Electric project and at this stage Rolls Royce is emphatic that the model is not destined for production. It’s being made as purely an R&D project to see whether there is space in the Rolls Royce range in the future for a zero emissions vehicle, or some kind of electric technology at the least.

The 102EX is based on a Phantom platform and in that immense Rolls Royce bonnet are two electric motors capable of 395 hp and 800 Nm of torque. The lithium ion batteries are 71 kW and allow for a range of about 200 km. Time to 100 km/hr is eight seconds and top speed has been limited to 160 km/hr. As you would expect, it’s a heavy vehicle with weight of 2,720 kg.

Some of the details of the Rolls Royce 102EX Concept include a Spirit of Ecstasy statuette made from new materials, a polycarbon Makrolon front grille and new Corinova leather upholstery on the inside. There is a new Atlantic Chrome tint (in 16 layers!) which uses ceramic particles to increase shine. The model, which is also known as the Phantom EE, will be used in upcoming testing and customer feedback projects to see whether the Rolls Royce brand can make space for an electric model.

Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet and Tiguan restyling live at 2011 Geneva Motor Show

By Alison

Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet e Tiguan Restyling - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

The Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet and the Tiguan restyling might not be the wow factor you’re looking for live at the Geneva Motor Show, but the two models are symptomatic of Volkswagen’s approach to things: steady, quality design and nothing radical on the popular models. Volkswagen was keen to underline the importance of the Golf Cabriolet in its model range, and it is keeping the traditional fabric roof, and giving up on the central roll bar.

The model is pretty much a standard drop-top Golf apart from the more slanted windshield compared to the three- and five-door models. The roof can be opened in just 9.5 seconds and the mechanism works up to 30 km/hr. The diesel and petrol engine range goes from 105 to 210 hp and we’ll also see BlueMotion and DSG dual-clutch transmission. For the type of vehicle it is, the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet will never be as popular as its hard-top counterpart, but we expect to see a number of these cruising around Europe in summer.

The Volkswagen Tiguan restyling is extremely minimal, with the company backing a winner which has sold 572,000 models. The front end gets a slight redesign to bring it under the “family feeling” image currently pursued by Volkswagen. The engine range has been modified to reduce fuel consumption across the line by an average of 0.7 l/100 km. The petrol options available range from 122 to 210 hp, the diesels from 110 to 170.
