2013 Range Rover Sport: first spy shots

By Adrian

Range Rover Sport spy shots

The long-awaited new version of the ‘normal’ Range Rover is currently in its final stage of testing and expected to be launched at the end of 2012, but its little sister Range Rover Sport is also undergoing development and a new and lighter version is supposed to come out one or two years later. These new spy shots show us a mule sporting most of the bodywork of the current model, but nonetheless they prove that a new Range Rover Sport is actually in the making.

As in the case of the next Range Rover, the focal point of this development is weight reduction and new materials will be used by Land Rover to serve this purpose. Rumor has it that both models will use a modified version of Jaguar XJ’s aluminum chassis and boast Evoque-inspired aesthetics.

No information has yet been released about the engine range, although it is quite likely that the next generation of both Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will use tweaked versions of their current engines, with more output and less fuel consumption. Hybrid versions may also surface at a later time, well after the official debut.

Land Rover Defender: current model to remain in production until 2017

By Adrian

Land Rover Defender

According to Autocar, the current Land Rover Defender range will be produced until 2017, at least. Quoting an internal source from Land Rover, it seems that a recent change in the legislation will allow the British manufacturer to keep the model in production a little longer than what they thought. A new set of emissions regulation rules that was supposed to come into effect in 2015 would have meant the end for the Defender, but a ‘derogation’ has now postponed to whole thing to 2020. Then, the fact that a few years back the model was re-classified as ‘commercial vehicle’ might have played a part in that, too.

However, Land Rover plans to release a new short-paced version of the Defender in 2015 will not be affected by the change as both models will be on sale at the same time for a few years. The new Defender was anticipated at the last Frankfurt Motor Show by the DC100 Concept, a prototype powered by a 2.0 litre diesel engine coupled with 8-Speed automatic transmission and Start/Stop system. The concept car used a new generation Terrain Response system with new functionalities and was also equipped with Terrain-i and Wave Aid systems: the former suggests the driver alternative routes through the LCD screen placed in the middle of the dashboard, the latter measures water depth in front of the car before crossing.

Range Rover planning a 300hp version of the Evoque

By Adrian

Range Rover Evoque: nuove foto ufficiali

Land Rover could soon start the production of a 300hp version of Range Rover Evoque, powered by a Ford-derived 2.0-litres 4cylinder turbocharged engine. Even though the production of this spicy model is yet to receive the go-ahead from Land Rover’s top management, rumor has it that Evoque’s program director David Mitchell has already driven a prototype, saying that “the chassis can easily take that kind of power“.

One issue that the British carmaker might have to face if the project will get the thumbs up is to find a name for this hot version of the Evoque as neither Jaguar nor Land Rover have a sub-brand for their most extreme models (’Supercharged’ badge aside). However, we think they will surely find a way around it.
