Chrysler Delta unveiled in UK

By Alison

Chrysler_Delta_UK_badge

We’ll have to get used to writing “Chrysler Delta” and not “Lancia Delta“, but in any case, the UK Delta has been quietly unveiled on that market, while the rest of Europe keeps the Lancia badge. After the Lancia Delta itself recently got a revised front grille, the only difference on the Chrysler version are the badges themselves, inside and out.

Engine options include two petrol engines and two diesels. There is a 1.4 T-Jet with 118 hp and 206 Nm of torque and the 1.4 Multiair with 138 hp and 230 Nm. The diesels are a 1.6 Multijet with 118 hp and 300 Nm, and a 2.0 Multijet with 162 hp and 360 Nm of torque. The Chrysler Delta should be on sale in the UK shortly.

New Lancia range from Chrysler live at Geneva

By Alison

Lancia: la nuova gamma - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

Thanks to Chrysler, Lancia has launched an entire range at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, finally providing a complete and comprehensive offering that no longer has much to do with the origins of the Lancia brand, but that might at least give it some added relevance. The models on show at Geneva are: the new Lancia Ypsilon, the brand’s small flag bearer of late, the Lancia Delta model year 2011 concept, the Lancia Thema, the Voyager, the Lancia Flavia and the Flavia Cabrio.

The Lancia Ypsilon has a load to bear for such a small model and the update version is hoped to continue the success of this 25-year old model. It will be on sale starting from June in most European markets, and will appear as a Chrysler model in the UK and Ireland from September.

The Lancia Flavia models are currently considered concept models but are only just short of production, according to Olivier Francois. He says that if the response is positive, the Flavia models could be into production within six months. The Lancia gallery below live from Geneva shows all the razzle dazzle of the presentation… but will they pull this off?

RIP Lancia? New Lancia Delta facelift at Geneva

By Alison

Lancia_Delta_facelift

The Lancia Delta restyling will appear at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and the title for this post refers to some of the comments from Italians regarding this latest Lancia offering. I feel that the Lancia Delta facelift borders on gaudy, but there are reasons behind the new design, most of which lie in the Fiat-Chrysler amalgamation of products.

The new Delta appears three years after the initial market launch of the model and indicates a further step in Lancia-badged Chrysler models and vice versa. The major change in the Delta style is the new front grille with horizontal strips designed to host the Chrysler logo in future. The main engine option will be the 1.6-litre Multijet unit with 105 hp and 300 Nm of torque. It reaches 100 km/hr in 10.7 seconds, and has a top speed of 186 km/hr. CO2 emissions measure 120 g/km.

Other engine options available on the new Delta are: 1.4 Turbo fuel and twin-fuel models (the latter with petrol/LPG set-up) with 120 hp, the 1.4 Turbo Multiair with 140 hp, 1.8 DI Turbo with 200 hp, another Multijet with 120 hp and a 1.9 TwinTurbo option with 190 hp. Going back to the comments from the local market, the clever engine range on offer doesn’t seem to be doing much for Italians who are currently lamenting the Americanisation of the model, in addition to an obsoleteness that had already entered the Lancia family long ago.

First pics: Chrsyler Delta vs Lancia Delta

By Alison

Chrysler Delta first pics Detroit

More Lancia than Chrysler, here are the first pics of the Chrysler Delta model seen at the Detroit show. We don’t have any official details of the Chrysler Delta as yet, although it looks very similar to the Lancia Delta with a chunkier rear and a changed front grille and bonnet. We’ll have more details to follow, but you can compare the Chrysler Delta to our gallery of the Lancia Delta after the jump. What do you think?

New Chrysler-Lancia at Detroit show

By Alison

Lancia Delta 1.8 Di Turbojet 200 Cv

The first Lancia-Chrysler model to be produced will be revealed at the Detroit auto show as an example of the first combined Fiat Chrysler style. The model will be presented under the Chrysler badge, and it’s possible we’re looking at a Delta-based design.

It seems that the Lancia brand was the obvious choice for Chrysler models integrated with Fiat, although this new model will be a concept only, not a production model as the Delta has obviously not been developed to comply with the US car market. We’re curious to see what they produce though, and won’t write off a Chrysler-Lancia model until we see one.

Pics: Car of the Year 1964 to 2010

By Alison

Car of the Year 1964 to 2010

Some car trivia for the weekend was required as we get down to the business of Christmas cheer, and in this gallery we take a look at all the Car of the Year models from 1964 to today. This year, the humble Volkswagen Polo took out the title, marking the 47th since the award was incepted. The Car of the Year award is judged by seven European car magazine titles: Autocar in the UK, Stern in Germany, Vi Bilägare in Sweden, Autovisie in the Netherlands, L’Automobile Magazine in France, Auto in Italy, and Autopista in Spain.

The first Car of the Year back in 1964 was the Rover 2000, and things have come a long way since then. The Car of the Year must be a new vehicle that is available to at least five European markets in the year in question. Criteria such as design, comfort, performance, safety, practicality, ecology and economy, price and overall driveability are considered.

Perhaps surprisingly, the brand that has received the most awards in the history of the Car of the Year is Fiat, with a total of nine models, and that’s not including other Fiat Group brands such as Alfa Romeo or Lancia. Following Fiat, the company with the most success has been Renault, winning six times. The Volkswagen Polo for 2010 marks only the second time that Volkswagen has won the prize. After the jump is the full list of Car of the Year models from 1964 to 2010.

Alfa Giulietta first impressions: lining up the Giulietta competitors

By Alison

Alfa Giulietta first official pics

The new Alfa Giulietta has been released and first impressions from the world’s press are starting to come through. We’ve gathered some of those impressions in one place so we can check out just what the Giulietta promises and whether it might deliver.

As is the fate of many an Alfa Romeo, the focus is on style - how good does it look? I don’t know whether that means there’s nothing special to bother about under the bonnet, or whether the presence of the best Fiat technology is taken for granted. To be fair, the new Giulietta will get Fiat’s Multiair engines, Alfa DNA and dual-clutch transmission so it’s no slack on the technology front. And it will have between 120 and 170 hp, before the Quadrifoglio Verde version turns up with 230 hp.

So far, the new Giulietta is a very nice looking car. Yesterday I said I appreciated the sloping, elegant rear and overall there is plenty of classic Alfa sports style. It’s managed to keep its Alfa Romeo class without falling into mediocrity or appearing like just another, bigger 147. Given the brand image and style of Alfa, I also think it stands apart from other offerings in the Fiat Group range.

Fiat Chrysler: Lancia Delta to the US?

By Alison

Lancia Delta 1.8 Di Turbojet 200 Cv

The first step in the Lancia end of the Fiat-Chrysler bargain could be a re-badging operation for the Lancia Delta, to position it below the Sebring, without having to develop a totally new model. An American version of the Delta could therefore appear, with a Chrysler badge, which would be the best option for a Chrysler relaunch.

The Lancia Delta could meet the taste of the US motoring public, both in terms of luxury style and size. At 450 centimetres long, it is a direct competitor to the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 Sportback. The refined interior would confirm the premium brand status that Chrysler is hoping to achieve. This is supported by a spot-on engine range, including the 1.8Di turbo with 200 hp, and the 1.9-litre Multijet twin-turbo with 190 hp.

The Lancia Delta is the also the first totally new vehicle that debuted under the leadership of Olivier Francois, recently nominated as Chrysler brand manager. The possibility of Delta becoming the first Chrysler model under new Fiat management would seem the most likely option.

Lancia Delta 1.8 Di Turbojet: new pics

By Alison

Lancia Delta 1.8 Di Turbojet 200 Cv

Lancia has released these new pics of its Delta 1.8 litre Di Turbojet at 200 hp. It is the top-of-the-range Delta version, originally presented at the Geneva show and publicised in the film Angels and Demons. It is equipped with the same engine as the Alfa Romeo 159 Tbi and capable of sports performance.

It is the only Lancia Delta equipped with the new Sportronic six speed transmission with steering wheel controls. Its top speed is 230 km/hr, taking 7.4 seconds to reach 100 km/hr, and having an average fuel consumption of 7.8 l/100 km. CO2 emissions measure about 185 g/km, and so it complies with Euro 5 norms.

The Delta Turbojet will also be available in Executive version, with special internal features in a version chosen to be the official vehicle for the next G8 meeting in Italy.

Lancia Delta Martini Racing

By Alison

Nuova Lancia Delta Martini Racing

This image comes from the Netherlands and is of a new Lancia Delta in Martini Racing colours, the same livery as the celebrated ancestor, which dominated WRC rally championships from 1987 to 1992. This is a real photo and not a reconstruction, and we like the final result.

The rear wing is missing, but the alloy wheels are fully present, making us nostalgic for the time when the Delta name sparkled on the list of Lancia’s offering. The six world championships made Italians proud of their brand, and this image re-lives a dream.

Nautical Delta to be created in Lancia's Yacht Design Concept

By Alison

Lancia Delta

A new project called Lancia Delta Yacht Design Concept has been created after a round table discussion at the Lancia Style Centre in Turin. The initiative reached by Lancia and Yacht Design (an industry magazine) has the aim of arriving at five design projects involving the Delta, by the end of September.

The work will be a mix of nautical inspiration, from motor yachts to sailing, with the aim of transferring yachting ideas and know-how, to the Lancia Delta. The project is to take in both the exterior and interior, drivers’ seat and dashboard.

So far, it seems to be a work in progress as no news is available as to whether the project will remain as style proposition, or whether any features will actually enter what we presume would be a limited production.
