The Lamborghini Aventador is supposed to be the ‘replacement’ to the Murcielago but apart from keeping some of its Lamborghini characteristics, it’s not entirely accurate to consider the new raging bull merely a development of the model it will substitute. In the first part of our Aventador test drive we looked at the styling differences of the new Lambo, but now we get down to the nitty gritty of it all - the new Lamborghini V12 engine.
The Aventador is much longer than the Murcielago and was meant to improve some of the rougher aspects of how the previous model drove. And despite its larger size, the improvements in the way the Aventador handles can be noticed straight away. It’s efficient, easy to handle and even elegant to drive at times. It’s also more responsive than the Murcielago and that’s evident from the acceleration out of the first corner at Vallelunga.
We can’t yet say whether the Aventador will have a long life as Lamborghini’s real model for the 21st century but the new V12 is quite an evolution on what has come previously. It has a lot of personality: smart and fast as a track car, but also easy to use despite its 700 hp.

After reports that the German car dealership of Auto Salon Singen had the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Concept on sale, according to its website you can also purchase among the first examples of the new Lamborghini Aventador. We should note that this name still has not been officially confirmed by the company, but “Aventador LP700-4″ is more than likely the new Lamborghini V12 badge.
The web page includes the Aventador technical details but there is nothing to add to what we know so far: all-wheel drive, 700 hp, 690 Nm of torque, acceleration to 100 km/hr of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 350 km/hr. No image has been included for the car so we still don’t have any official pictures of the Aventador but the price is quoted as 260, 420 euros, excluding taxes.

This leaked dealer’s guide for the new Lamborghini Aventador would seem to confirm much of the technical information we looked at yesterday, including the 690 hp, all-wheel drive and new ISR transmission. Meanwhile, being a dealer’s guide, it’s also got just about everything you wanted to know on the various standard specs and options, colours, trims and interior finishings that will be available for the Aventador. Interestingly, however, the document is labelled simply the Lamborghini LP700-4 dealer’s guide meaning we still have no official confirmation of the name. We’ll stick to Aventador for the moment as we wait for Lamborghini to decide when it will release everything officially after this leak. As this is probably the closest we’ll get to the actual car itself, we’re also going to check out the document to imagine our own new Lambo V12 in everything from pastel to pearl effects.
According to Autoblog.it and a reader source, the details of the new Lamborghini Murcielago replacement have been leaked, with the new model being called the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. The Aventador name has already been rumoured as a possible moniker for the new car, and the second part reveals a couple of other things about the new vehicle.
As the name is still unofficial, we can take the Aventador as a rumour likely to be true at this stage, while the new Lamborghini 6.5-litre V12 should have 700 hp and all-wheel drive. In documents apparently provided to the Italians, a top speed of 350 km/hr is mentioned as is an acceleration time to 100/km of just 2.9 seconds. At this stage, we would guess that torque is impressive as well.
The Aventador will have an electronically controlled Haldex four-wheel drive system and a new ISR (Independent Shifting Rods) transmission with a seventh gear, claimed to shift in just 50 milliseconds. With Lamborghini’s push towards lighter weight vehicles, the Aventador should weigh in at about 1,575 kg - similar to the 1,500 kg which has been estimated of late - and has a weight-power ratio of 2.25 kg/hp.

Autocar has got the absolute exclusive on the new Lamborghini Murcielago, and has test driven the company’s new V12 engine unit. A third prototype vehicle was made available to Steve Sutcliffe at Nardo in Italy, 18 months after he test drove the first one, and has been described as the future of Lamborghini - defining the brand for the next ten years.
Some technical characteristics about the Murcielago replacement are already known - its carbonfibre tub and new suspension - but what Lamborghini won’t reveal is how much it weighs. Take a standard 1,700 kg weight and subtract whatever you think the carbonfibre parts have saved and you’ll have your answer, is how Maurizio Reggiani responds. Whatever you come up with, it’s starting to sound exciting as Lamborghini saves on weight, while still producing extreme performance cars in a world where emissions and fuel savings are ever more important.
The new V12 itself has a different sound, but Sutcliffe described the overall feeling of the initial prototype as more like a smooth, standard supercar with the kind of refinement we now expect from these models. The actual driving experience is one completely different from the current Murcielago. It’s sleek, quiet, controlled and balanced where the old model was unpredictable and difficult to handle.

Here are the first videos of the new Lamborghini V12 engine. With some inspirational classical music, there’s not much more information released although if you’re into this stuff, you’ll probably love it. Stick around long enough, and you get to hear the engine switched on. The new 6.5-litre V12 has 700 hp and is currently called the L539. It will equip the new Murcielago replacement when it appears next year.
The other news is the new Lamborghini ISR transmission and the all-wheel drive technology with rear Haldex differential. The engine is completely new for Lamborghini, and is the most powerful produced so far - the previous engine fitted to the LP670-4 produced 670 hp and 660 Nm. These videos don’t really get us going, given the absence of the car itself, but if Lamborghini can get its weight down as well, we could be seeing that new Lambo era emerge. The second video is after the jump.

After our speculation earlier about whether the Lamborghini Aventador is the new Murcielago or the Sesto Elemento production model, the company has at least released details of its new powerplant. A new Lamborghini V12 is on its way. It will be a 6.5-litre engine with 700 hp and 690 Nm of torque.
According to the company, they took carte blanche to develop this new unit and they’ve matched it to a new transmission as well - the Lamborghini ISR gearbox. It’s an automated manual gearbox with split-second shifting. The new powertrain will start production in 2011 ready to equip the Murcielago replacement, which reports say will be called the Lamborghini Aventador. The press release is after the jump for your V12 pleasure.
