The Gallardo rear wheel LP 550-2 made in honour of test driver Valentino Balboni is undergoing its launch in Europe. This pic comes from the event in Zurich to celebrate the car.
The vehicle is a special edition limited production of only 250 units, and will be the only Lamborghini rear wheel drive option. It can reach 100 km/hr in just 3.9 seconds. For a full gallery of the launch, see Autoblog, and for more information our LP 550-2 gallery and technical details.
Lamborghini has confirmed yesterday’s rumour that it will produce a limited edition, rear wheel drive LP 550-2. The special edition is limited to Lamborghini test driver Valentino Balboni, who has worked at the company since 1967.
While now officially retired, Balboni is still a Lamborghini brand ambassador, and has driven every prototype of the company since 1973. The LP 550-2 will feature a V10 engine at 550 hp, and as the number ‘2′ suggests, rear wheel drive.
It will be the only Lamborghini in the line-up that drives solely on rear wheels. The LP 550-2 reaches 100 km/hr in 3.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 320 km/hr. With only 250 units being produced, in Europe it will cost about 162,000 euros, while in the US it will be about 219,800 USD. In the UK the pricing is set at 137,900 pounds, all figures without tax. Lamborghini could soon make its Gallardo LP550-2 available with rear wheel drive. We’re waiting from news from the company, but the new-entry could be available in a limited series of 250 models, at a price of ten percent less than the model already in the range.
Eight chrome colours will also be available, all with long white stripes. No news is available on whether it will be lighter than the current model, or others in the Lamborghini family. For exmaple, the Murcielago SV is lighter than previously and now covers 100 km/hr in 3.9 seconds.
