Lamborghini history - Part 5: Lambo Gallardo

By theBride

The fifth episode of this Lamborghini documentary focuses on the Gallardo, and in particular on two models: the Gallardo LP 570-4 Super Leggera and the Gallardo Spyder.

The Super Leggera’s structure can be summed up in an ultra-light body stretched over a tubular frame, and thanks to the extensive use of carbon fibre this vehicle has been crowned the lightest in the Lamborghini range. With a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph), the LP 570-4 Super Leggera only comes second to the Aventador in terms of performance.

The Gallardo Spyder was first unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show as an “al fresco” version of the v10 super sports car. Needless to say, watching this video only makes you wish you could jump immediately in one of these jewels and spend the rest of your life cruising from riviera to riviera.

Nissan Juke-R vs Ferrari 458 Italia vs Lamborghini Gallardo vs Mercedes SLS AMG

By Adrian

A few days ago, at the Dubai International Marine Club, Nissan arranged a quite interesting little challenge featuring its much-hyped Juke-R (the model that hosts a GT-R engine in a Juke’s body) and three well-established supercars: the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Lamborghini Gallardo and the Mercedes SLS AMG. This curious race - which took place on a short and narrow course laid out in the streets of Dubai - ended with a quite surprising result, although it must be considered that the particular features of the improvised circuit did not help some of the cars to fully express their mind-blowing potential.

The Juke-R is the outcome of the collaboration between Nissan and specialist Ray Mallock Ltd. and - thanks to the 485 hp of its impressive 3.8-litre twin turbo V8 - is capable of reaching 100 km/h (62mph) from standstill in just 3.7 seconds, hitting a maximum speed of 257 km/h (160 mph). The model is not meant for production and is used as a show car at the various Nissan’s events around the globe.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP600+ GT3 by Reiter Engineering

Germany’s Reiter Engineering, the self-proclaimed “only manufacturer worldwide of racing and race-look-a-like Lamborghini vehicles”, has revealed their Lamborghini Gallardo LP600+ GT3 race package for 2012. In an attempt to make the car competitive and reliable in endurance racing, the new model has been upgraded with a lighter and more precise Holinger transmission, an updated AP Racing braking system with 6-piston calipers and reworked cooling, new suspension (which is still under development), a bigger splitter and double plates on the front bumper corners.

As for the engine, it will be a slightly revised version the same 5.2 liter V10 already in use, producing 592 hp at 8,000 rpm. The car will make its racing debut in early 2012 (with the now missing new parts ready), more specifically at the 24-hours in Dubai and the Gulf 12-hours in Abu Dhabi respectively.

Lamborghini presents the Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder at the LA Auto Show

By Adrian

Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder

Lamborghini is at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show introducing the Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder, the convertible model based on Gallardo Balboni which is also the first rear-drive convertible Lambo since 1998 Diablo SV Roadster. The Italian-German manufacturer describes it as a “model for purists”, equipped with the same 5.2 litres V10 delivering 550 hp of its hard-top counterpart coupled with six-speed manual and e-gear automatic transmissions.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder uses a specifically dedicated setting that improves handling and stability, a rear differential with a 45 % limited-slip setup, an ESP system with CORSA mode (which allows for greater drift angles). Weighing in at 1,520 kg, the Spyder boasts a 0-100 km/h sprint time (0-62 mph) of 4.2 seconds, whereas the 1,380 kg hardtop version does that in 3.9 seconds.

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 with a ski box

By Adrian

Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 con ski box

Professional freeskier and alpine ski racer Jon Olson entrusted its Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 to German tuner DMC in order to have it transformed a little bit, but it was not the usual tuning job. The 29 years old Swede is a long-time Lamborghini enthusiast as it used to drive to the various ski events with a Murcielago LP670, but when he found out about the Aventador he got rid of that and ordered the new Lambo.

Unfortunately he needs to wait a whole year to get it delivered, and so he got himself a Gallardo and gave it to DMC to provide it with a custom made ski-box (approved for use at speeds of up to 255km/h) and a camouflage paint-job. You can admire the result in these pictures.

2011 Frankfurt Motor Show: Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale

By theBride

Lamborghini Gallardo L570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale - Salone di Francoforte Live 2011

Lamborghini has just presented its new Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Only some chosen few will have the privilege to own one since its production will be limited to 150 models to honour Italy’s Unification 150th anniversary. It will be only available in three colors - Rosso Mars red, Grigio Telesto grey, Bianco Monocerus white - with some black elements, both glossy and opaque.

The Super Trofeo Stradale boasts a super-light V10 5,2 570 HP, weighting only 1340 kg, and three times more aerodynamic pressure if compared to the LP560-4. Its aerodynamic kit in fact is considered probably the most extreme ever seen on a Gallardo so far, especially when it comes down to the carbon fibre diffuser and the adjustable rear wing.

Gold Lamborghini Gallardo in China

By Alison

Gold Lamborghini Gallardo China

From black gold in the coal industry to the real stuff, poured all over a Lamborghini Gallardo. This Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-2 has a pure gold paint job and is to be seen cruising the streets in the area of Shijiazhiang in the Hebei Province, known for its coal industry (and therefore rich Chinese businessmen). Unfortunately there are no estimates as to how much this kind of machine might cost, what with an original purchase and then the gold paint.

We don’t know who did the paint job either, but would be interesting to see whether China’s panel beaters are starting to specialise in the stuff (BTW - how do you get a scractch out of this?). We don’t like the colour but hell, it certainly makes the statement.

Lamborghini Gallardo by Cosa Design

By Alison

Lamborghini Gallardo by Cosa Design

The Lamborghini Gallardo gets a new body-kit from Cosa Design with a new front fascia, redesigned side sills, new rear bumpers and a huge aerodynamic rear wing. That wing at the back is not the only thing that makes the bum of this look very aggressive - there is also a dedicated diffuser and squared-off massive exhaust.

Cosa Design has used the Reventon as inspiration for the body panelling, but that’s not where this hard tuning effort stops. The mechanics get updated with the new exhaust taking power to 540 hp - an increase of 40. With torque at 550 Nm, the Gallardo Cosa Design has a top speed of 317 km/hr.

For those wanting to take things to the extra next level, there is also a set of new adjustable suspension and brakes with no less than eight pistons. Finally it’s shod with 20-inch wheels and AutoEvolution describes this as the best-looking Gallardo makeover ever. See for yourself in the gallery.

Lamborghini Gallardo Tricolore to production

By Alison

The Lamborghini Gallardo Tricolore which celebrates 150 years of Italian unification, will get a production run, says the company. Lamborghini has said that the Tricolore edition will “not be a one-off, nor will it be a limited series”. So we take that to mean it will be a standard option in the Gallardo line-up.

The Tricolore is a Gallardo LP550-2 model based on the rear-wheel drive Valentino Balboni model. It features an off-centre stripe in red, white and green on an elegant white background. We’re not sure exactly of the production details, but this could be one of last special Gallardo’s we see before the next generation compact Lambo turns up.

If the Lamborghini product plan we posted yesterday is anything to go by, the new Gallardo will be called the Lamborghini Cabrera and will appear as early as 2013. In the meantime, we’ll happily enjoy the lovely little Gallardo Tricolore.

Lamborghini Estoque, Sesto Elemento and Gallardo III in company plan: Lamborghini to 2020

By Alison

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

After the Lamborghini Aventador debuted to much glitter at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, attention has turned once again to the models possibly to appear in a future Lamborghini line-up. These are purely rumours at this stage, so we’ll take them as such to avoid disappoint.

According to the Team Speed forum the following Lamborghini product plan will happen:

2011: Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 and Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder
2012: Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 Roadster and top-ranging Lamborghini Sesto Elemento
2013: the new Lamborghini Gallardo, currently called the Cabrera (pure speculation here, too)

The next three years that follow will be busy as well with an onslaught of:

Lamborghini Gallardo Tricole pics: Happy Birthday Italy!

By Alison

Today, March 17, Italy celebrates 150 years of unification and this Lamborghini Gallardo Tricolore has been created especially for the occasion. The model features white exterior tint with an off-centre tricolour stripe in Italian colours and blacked-out wheels. It’s an elegant tribute to Italy’s anniversary and a fitting homage from one of the world’s most famous Italian brands.

The Gallardo Tricolore model is based on the LP550-2 and has 550 hp and 540 Nm of torque. The lack of all-wheel drive saves 120 kg on the LP560-4 model. Acceleration to 100 km/hr takes just 3.9 seconds and top speed is 320 km/hr. Lamborghini may have just released its new Aventador, but it’s using an old favourite to party. See all the lovely Gallardo Tricolore pics below.

Lamborghini Gallardo destroyed in China: pics

By Alison

Lamborghini Gallardo destroyed by sledgehammers in China

This Lamborghini Gallardo was destroyed by an unhappy owner in China, who has been unsatisfied with the lack of response from Lamborghini on a few problems that he encountered with his new supercar. The model apparently had some starting issues but when the owner tried to get them fixed, things spiralled downhill.

So to draw attention to consumer rights, particularly in China where the owner believes increased purchasing power for luxury goods has not been matched by increased service in that market, he decided to destroy his Gallardo with sledgehammers and the help of his own factory employees. It’s quite a scene - check out the hammered Gallardo in the pics below.
