Hyundai Veloster Turbo at the 2012 NAIAS

Hyundai has just unveiled its new Veloster Turbo at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and here are a bunch of shots of the car taken live at the event by our mates from Autoblog.it as well as an official photo gallery released by the South Korean carmaker itself. Aesthetically, the new overall design of the model looks far more athletic than its standard counterpart: the front end gets an unique and aggressive hexagonal grille as well as fog-lights, while at the rear we find a diffuser and new dual round-tip center exhaust setup. New side skirts and exclusive 18″ alloys also contribute to the model’s muscular outlook. In comparison to the standard model, the Veloster Turbo maintains the same 2,649 mm wheelbase, but gains 30.4 mm in length and 15.2 mm in width, while the weight is rated at just 1,270 kg (2,800 pounds), making it the lighter model of its class.

Hyundai Veloster Turbo is powered by a 1.6-litre 4-cylinder Turbocharged-Gasoline Direct Injection (T-GDI) engine delivering 201 hp at 6,000 rpm and with 265 Nm (195 lb-ft) of peak torque available at 1,750 rpm, and coupled with either a manual or an automatic 6-speed gearbox with paddle shifters. Obviously, the main thing here is the addition of the Twin-Scroll turbocharger, which provides the model with a +63 hp and +97 Nm (72 lb-ft) over the standard 1.6 not-turbo Veloster.

As for the interior, the Veloster Turbo boasts leather seats with stitched ‘Turbo” logos (heated on the front). The car also gets an exclusive Supervision Cluster that uses two TFT screens between tachometer and speedometer providing the driver with the most relevant info, plus the 7″ multifunction touch-screen display in the middle of the console used by the standard Veloster as well. To find out more about the new Hyundai Veloster Turbo, check out the official Press Release after the jump.

Hyundai Veloster Turbo

The first images of the eagerly awaited Hyundai Veloster Turbo are now available. The new sporty hatchback from the South Korean manufacturer is at the 2012 NAIAS with a new turbocharged 1.6-litre 4-cylinder Twin-Scroll engine with direct injection, delivering 204 hp at 6,000 rpm with 265 Nm of peak torque available at 1,750 rpm. This unit can be mated to either an automatic or manual 6-speed transmission.

New engine aside, this version of the Veloster sports a new front grille, a re-designed front fascia, side skirts and a new rear bumper hosting two oval-shaped exhaust tail pipes. In the cabin we have sports seats and specifically dedicated trim and finishing. The Hyundai Veloster Turbo weighs 1,270 kg, and this is the last data we can provide you with for now: we will be waiting for more official news from Detroit.

Hyundai Veloster line up at the 2011 SEMA

By Adrian

Hyundai Veloster SEMA 2011

Hyundai brought at the SEMA no less than six different renditions of the Veloster. Besides Rhys Millen’s Rally Car there were also an all white concept car from PM Lifestyle, a turbocharged tuning from ARK Performance, and three version of the car - named Gaming, Tech and Music - courtesy of Remix. These last three models show interesting aesthetic combinations, using aerodynamic kits and matching colors for both interior and exterior of the car. The Veloster from ARK Performance instead can be considered as an anticipation of what Hyundai might officially come up with in a few months, meaning a racing-oriented version sporting a turbocharged 4-cylinder 1.6 engine delivering 210 hp.

ARK Performance Hyundai Veloster

By Adrian

ARK Performance Hyundai Veloster

American tuner ARK Performance will unveil its first rendition of the Hyundai Veloster - developed with the direct support of the Korean manufacturer - at the 2011 SEMA in Las Vegas. Just a handful of official CGI drawings of the car have been released so far. The aerodynamic wide body kit provides the revised Veloster with enlarged wheel arches and brand new alloy wheels, while the addition of a turbocharger boasts the power of its 1.6 4-cylinder up to 210hp. All that obviously required the upgrade of both setup and braking system, which now adopts 6 pistons calipers on the front. As for the passenger compartment, it will be protected by a roll cage and feature alcantara interior and a high quality audio system.

Even though this car is just an authentic showroom prototyope, it highlights the aftermarket potential of the little Korean sport-coupe. At the moment, the basic production model can count on a 1.6 litres 140hp petrol engine only, but more engine configurations will be made available in the future. The European market would surely welcome a lively turbodiesel version of the Veloster with open arms, while a more aggressive turbocharged petrol version is also supposed to surface later on.

Hyundai Veloster Test Drive: the results

By theBride

Hyundai Veloster Wallpaper
During our visit to the Hyundai showroom in Frankfurt we had the chance to see the Veloster in detail as well as to test-drive it. Even if the model we tried was a pre-production one, we can definitely say that this is a crossover suitable for someone who doesn’t want to pass unnoticed. The Velosters’ style in fact can be defined as daring, and the fluidity of its shapes confirms that Hyundai seems eager to distance itself from the past in terms of design.

The first thing that catches the eye is probably the fact that only the passenger side has two doors, while the driver’s has only got one. This changes the vehicle’s feel depending on the viewer’s perspective: more sporty or less intimidating, it’s just a matter of points of view. And despite the rear door’s handle being integrated with the window, the passenger side rear window looks actually bigger then the others, as in some sort of optical illusion.

The Veloster’s front view is quite aggressive due to the headlights’ design, while the radiator’s hexagonal grill is almost becoming Hyundai’s signature feature when it comes down to convey a family feeling to a vehicle. The hatchback is divided horizontally in two parts, with the top section becoming an extension of the adjustable panoramic roof, therefore providing extra brightness. Parking is made easier by a video camera that not only supplies a wider view, but also displays some guide-lines on the screen for the driver to follow.
