Giugiaro Frazer Nash Concept: fastest hybrid in the world

By Alison

Giugiaro Hybrid Concept Car 2009

To see the fastest hybrid car in the world, you would need to go the Geneva motor show for a look at this vehicle from the Giugaro family. Father Giorgietto and son Fabrizio, have designed this concept car that will be presented at the show under the name of Frazer Nash.

The new Giugiaro concept is similar to the Quaranta concept car seen at the Geneva show a year ago. Concepts of power and emotion have not previously been considered in the sector of hybrid cars, but this particular example will have a 3.3 V6 engine, with two electric engines.

An overall power of 272hp can be reached, with torque at 288Nm. It is all wheel drive and capable of reaching 100 km/hr in just 4.05 seconds. Maximum speed is 300 km/hr.

Volkswagen to release Touareg Hybrid

By Alison

vw touareg hybrid

The Touareg hybrid should be available come next year, according to announcements from Volkswagen. The company will further expand its BlueMotion ecological range with this sports utility, which will add to the ever-widening range of hybrid vehicles available on the market.

The Volkswagen sports utility will be the first hybrid engine vehicle from the company, equipped with a V6 TSI and a 52hp electric motor, for a combined performance of 333hp. A new eight-speed automatic transmission will also feature, resulting in consumption of about nine litres per 100km.

Use of only the electric engine allows for speeds below 50 km/hr, while on full power (or boost mode) performance results in 374 hp and 550 Nm. More additions to the Volkswagen hybrid offering will take place in 2010, with the expansion of the Passat range, including an EcoFuel option of petrol-natural gas combination capable of 150hp and running 100 km with only 4.5 litres of petrol.

A BlueTDI engine will also emerge with 140 hp and consuming only 5.2 litres per 100km. The last engine option in development is the BlueMotion with start&stop technology, saving energy when stopping. All this should see a comprehensive ecological offering from Volkswagen within a year.

New images of Chevrolet Volt

Chevrolet Volt

Chevrolet has released shots of its Chevrolet Volt, that show the final look of this American hybrid and its technological aspects. You may as well save the photos at this stage, as the Volt itself won’t appear on the market until the end of 2010, while the new Toyota Prius and Honda Insight have got a jump on Chevrolet.

Chevrolet is still pursuing its hybrid programs though, with an agreement with LG to produce new batteries in its Michigan facilities. It’s not a bad looking car for the hybrid segment, though I don’t really get the shot of the flowers in the boot - economic friendliness taken too far when the norm is a set of golf clubs…?

Honda Insight video

By Alison

After the official shots and technical details of the new Honda Insight, here is the official video of the new hybrid, up for competition in the field of the Toyota Prius. Just like its more famous rival, the Honda Insight is planning on production of 200,000 examples in 2009 in the North American market, with hopes to recoup from the crisis experienced by more traditional models.

The Insight price should be more convenient than the Prius, coming in at around 21,000 euros, compared to 26,000 in the American market. In April we will see the model on the European market. The Insight has a 1.3 litre petrol engine at 88hp and 123 Nm, combined with an electric unit of nearly 14hp and 103 Nm, with average consumption sitting at 4.4 litres/100km, and only 101 g/km of CO2 emissions.

Audi Q5 hybrid for 2010

By Alison

Audi Q5 official

The Audi Q5 hybrid project has been dancing around a bit, in a one step forward and two steps back kind of rhythm, but Auto Week reports that the Q5 hybrid should debut in February 2010. This is after reports that Audi had cancelled its hybrid plans, or at least postponed them indefinitely.

There are still mixed messages coming from Audi, though, with its powertrain development manager, Wolfgang Hatz, saying that with the advantages, especially in cost, of diesel, any petrol/electric technology will have to be more efficient and convenient in order to compete with diesel.

There’s not much to be gleaned from Hatz’s statements, if only that Audi needs to include hybrid options in its range - a necessary path to follow for manufacturers to compete. The Q5 should provide a better option than the Q7 for hybrid technology in the European market.

Bmw confirms X6 and Series 7 Hybrid for 2009

By Alison

BMW X6 Concept

At the Detroit show, BMW has confirmed 2009 production of the hybrid versions of the X6 and 7 series, previously seen as prototypes at Frankfurt in 2007 in the form of the X6 ActiveHybrid and in Paris in 2008 as the Series 7 ActiveHybrid.

The engine used on the 7 Series is the new V8, 4.4 litre twin turbo petrol at 407hp, matched with a 20hp electric engine and 210Nm of torque. This will contribute to a 20 percent reduction in consumption, together with energy saved while stopped and other aspects from the Efficient Dynamics system.

The X6 is, generically speaking, a v8 petrol unit with ActiveHybrid Dual Mode, which in concept stage currently includes two driving modes: one for city driving and the other for high speed touring. It seems realistic to expect a debut at Frankfurt later this year.

Peugeot presents its crossover, the 3008

By Gustavo Henrique Ruffo

Peugeot 3008

Try defining a crossover. Your definition would certainly be something close to this: a mix of an SUV with another car type. Any type. Well, now try to name the new Peugeot 3008 a crossover. Since crossovers normally feature all-wheel drive, and the new French vehicle does not offer that (yet), you may find it difficult to name it like Peugeot has. If it is a problem to any buyer, there is something that may serve as a consolation: it will have AWD by 2011.

This is the deadline Peugeot has informed for the first offer of the HYbrid4 system. The 3008 will be the first car to offer it to customers when it is fully developed. The system works with an electric engine under the luggage compartment that will power the rear wheels. Since this engine does not need any mechanical link to the main engine, installed in the front of 3008, the car will not need to save room for a rear differential and other parts.

We expect this system to be more or less like the one presented back in 2008 by the Prologue HYbrid4. If it really is, the electric engine may generate 37 bhp (27 kW), while the main powerplant shall be the 2-litre HDi engine that generates 163 bhp (120 kW) at 3,750 rpm and 340 Nm at 2,000 rpm. This is the most powerful option in the 3008 range, what indicates the hybrid system will use it as its basis. In the concept, HYbrid 4 made the car have a fuel consumption of 24.4 km/l and CO2 emissions of 109 g/km.

Lancia Ypsilon: next generation new spy shots and testing

By Alison

lancia ypsilon 2011

After news of the first testing to be carried out on the new Lancia Ypsilon, initial spy shots are emerging prior to the debut of this little piece of luxury in 2011. This is later than Lancia originally planned, according to auto, motor und sport, so we may as well enjoy the spy shot for the moment.

The size should remain similar to that of the current model, with a big change in style being the main factor. The new Ypsilon will follow the more eccentric lines of the Delta and should distinguish itself further from the competition.

In terms of more technical changes, the focus is on reducing emissions and increasing fuel efficiency, and so we could be seeing the introduction of a hybrid engine, anticipated by Fiat Powertrain and planned for 2011.

Obama: Hybrid plug-ins for the White House

By Alison

Barack Obama After the dream success realised by Barack Obama at the US Election, he now has some hot potatoes to juggle, one of which is the deep crisis in the US car market. In recent comments, Obama has declared his willingness to revolutionise the White House automobile fleet, using hybrid plug-in models.

The message to US car manufacturers is clear - while General Motors and Ford have prospects for developing this technology, and new models on the way, it’s time to move forward and get serious about the products on offer. We wonder what’s going to happen to the new Limousine from Cadillac photographed over the recent months of the election.

Bmw X6 Hybrid: road tests continue

By Alison

Bmw X6 Hybrid

These shots from World Car Fans show BMW is continuing with its road tests of the X6 hybrid, currently with its double engine.

The X6 Active Hybrid could prove to be the first BMW hybrid vehicle on the market, as early as 2010. Rumours reveal that to increase the exclusivity of this vehicle, it could be offered in one colour only, though no ideas yet as to what colour that will be.

In addition to this one colour, an extensive list of optionals should also be available, further distinguishing this innovative product and providing some nice earnings for BMW. The jury is still out as to which engine will be used, with a possible V8 twin turbo as seen on the 7 Series.

Paris 2008: Kia presents cee'd Hybrid

By Alison

Parigi 2008: Kia cee'd Hybrid

Not only the Kia Soul will be at the Paris show to attract attention, but next to it at the Kia stand will be a hybrid version of the cee’d, proving that the Korean company is as modern as any other this side of the world.

The cee’d Hybrid that we see in France will be prototype, although production should start soon after. The engine is a 1.6 litre pertol with an electric unit at 20hp that is still under testing. The model should be available on the European market come 2010.

Other technical details are still unknown but Kia should be presenting them at the press conference. The transmission should be CVT, along with start&stop technology and braking energy savers. It’s possible that light materials will be used to improve fuel efficiency and performance.

Paris 2008: the Mercedes S 400 BlueHYBRID

By Alison

s400 bluehybrid

The Mercedes stand at the Paris show will be filled with world premieres of the future style and ecological friendliness of the brand, as the Fascination Concept and C 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY are enriched by the presence of the S 400 Blue HYBRID as well.

The Blue Hybrid will be the first Mercedes hybrid and will be launched commercially in summer 2009. It’s technical base is the same as that of the S 350, and will include an innovative electric component, thanks to which this vehicle will consume only 7.9 litres of petrol for every 100 km. The 190 g/km of CO2 emissions make this one of the cleanest cars in the world.

Performance has improved as well with 300hp overall and torque at 385Nm. Rear wheel drive is a key element, and transmission will include a version of the 7G-Tronic with modified software. The car will also be equipped with start-stop technology which turns the engine off at under 15km/hr, and energy regeneration after braking.
