Will the new Volkswagen Golf VII weigh 100 kg less?

By Adrian

The long-awaited seventh generation of the mighty Volkswagen Golf is expected to debut on the market worldwide in the second half of the current year, and a new GTI version of the iconic hatchback is obviously in the works too. According to some rumors collected by website GermanCarBlog, the new Golf range will weigh - roughly and on average - a good 70 kg less than the current version thanks to the extensive use extra high-strength steel in the shell, optimized suspension and lighter engines and components. Apparently, the new Golf GTI will go even further than that.

The next sporty version of the German hatch is in fact supposed to make use of even more aluminum, which should result in an overall weight loss of about 100 kg over the current GTI, which boasts a dry weight of 1,320 kg. Rumor has it that the roof will also be made of steel, a move that will play a part in keeping its center of mass as low as possible.

This diet will obviously be an adavantage for the new engine too: the revised 2.0 TSI engine of the next model should end up receiving an extra 20 hp, boosting the total output of the model in the 230 hp region, while the maximum torque figure should go up from 280 to 300 Nm. No doubt these are really interesting figures, which can just add up to the anticipation. The pictures featured in this article are old spy shots of the new Golf GTI and Golf R provided by our parent site Autoblog.it, that date back to last July.

Volkswagen Golf GTI by Schmidt Revolution

German aftermarket wheel specialist Schmidt Revolution introduces a new tuning program for Volkswagen Golf GTI Mark 5. The model has been given a re-calibrated ECU, a RFI air intake and a new 70 mm performance exhaust system with twin tail pipes courtesy of Friedrich Motorsport Lichtenfels, all which contributed to boost the original 197 hp output of the standard 2.0 TFSI engine up to 271 hp.

The car also uses sport-tuned suspension, an R32 lower bumper section, front lip and sill trims painted in gloss black and, last but not least, a set of Schmidt Revolution’s own 19″ ‘Gotham’ alloy wheels, fitted with 225/35R19 Marangoni M-Power tyres.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 video

By Alison

This video shows that the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 means (orgasmic?) business. We see a model drive the special edition Golf GTI in a very het-up fashion, appropriate for the hot hatch which will go on show at the 2011 Worthersee event. Built to celebrate 35 years of the GTI model, the Edition 35 gets another 25 hp on the standard GTI, up to 235 hp. It’s quite tame on the style front, getting dedicated door sills, new bumpers and alloy wheels. More pics to come from Worthersee.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35

The special edition Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35 will go on show at the 2011 Worthersee tuning event in June to celebrate 35 years of the Golf GTI. A more powerful model, with a new style package, the Golf GT Edition 35 is equipped with a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with 232 hp. That’s 25 hp more than the standard GTI model.

The new special edition gets some exterior styling updates including a new front bumper to give it a lower and wider look, new alloy wheels, red brake callipers and plenty of badges. On the inside the Golf GTI Edition 35 has bucket seats and an original-style gearstick.

We expect there will be other upgrades to the Edition 35 model including possible suspension changes, and other options like manual or DSG transmission should be offered. The price has been upgraded though, costing 30,425 euros in Germany, which is more than 2,000 euros more than a standard GTI. The Golf GTI Edition 35 for Germany is available for pre-order with deliveries expected for June.

Seventh generation Volkswagen Golf to go three-door

By Alison

Volkswagen Golf GTI Adidas

The next Volkswagen Golf will get a three-door model alongside the traditional five-door hatch model despite the smaller version occupying only a small part of the segment. In the first nine months of 2010, just eight percent of C segment hatches sold in Europe were in a three-door configuration, but Volkswagen will return to occupy this niche, especially as the Golf GTI has a high three-door request.

The VW group will broaden its offering of this kind of model, including the new three-door Seat Leon SC in its line-up, which will appear alongside the new Audi A3. Perhaps Volkswagen is one of the brands that can afford to take a different approach compared to other manufacturers. Recently we have seen the three-door Citroen C4, Ford Focus, Kia cee’d and Peugeot 308 exit from the scene, while newer models such as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Hyundai i30 will be offered in five-door models only.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Excessive

At the 2010 Worthersee event Volkswagen presented two new special version Golf GTI models: the Adidas and the Excessive. The Golf GTI Excessive, seen in these live pics, will be strictly a show-car model and features a new Firespark Metallic paint and BBS CH Black Edition 19-inch wheels. Other internal sports features on the Excessive model include brushed aluminium finish, sports seats and twin colour red and black upholstery.

The Golf GTI Adidas will be on sale in June and as its name suggests, features styling from the international Adidas sports brand. It has Serron 18-inch wheels, sports seats, bi-xeno lights and rear LED lights. The Adidas model is expected to be as successful as the 1983 and 2007 Pirelli GTI models, and the 2006 Edition 30 GTI.

The Worthersee event, which dates back to 1982, celebrated the Golf GTI model which is enjoying a long and successful career. The first Golf GTI to be built was in 1976 and since then, 1.7 million models have been sold throughout the world.

New Golf GTI video

By Alison

This video of the Golf 6 GTI really shows that thanks to the new exhaust system, the new GTI has a sound that is far more involving and emotional than the previous model. The seven-minute long video makes you want to grab the keys and go for a spin. We’d settle for the villa at the end of the video, too. See our previous post for the Golf GTI pics and details.

Volkswagen Golf GTI: new info and pics

By Alison

Nuove immagini Volkswagen Golf 6 GTI

The wait is over as Volkswagen releases new images and information on its Glof GTI. The Golf 6 GTI sales will start in Germany in the coming days, with a Europe-wide debut after Easter. Summer will see the introduction to Asian markets and the US, where the name will be Golf MkVI.

The new Golf GTI has a 2.0 litre TSI engine at 211 hp, but the news doesn’t stop just at the power step. Modifications to the oil and fuel system result in greater fuel saving and lower emissions.

The sixth series of the Golf GTI keeps to Euro 5 norms, and requires only 7.3 litres to run 100 km. That’s down from the previous eight litres of the 2.0 litre TFSI at 200 hp of the previous model. CO2 emissions sit at 170 g/km.
