Ford Fusion/Mondeo official unveiling at the 2012 NAIAS: photo report and video

By Adrian

The new Ford Fusion is definitely one of the brightest stars at the 2012 NAIAS, and we have thoroughly covered the various steps that led to its official unveiling with our previous posts: we had seen its early incarnation in the Evos Concept at the last Frankfurt Motor Show, we published the spy shots, then the first leaked images on the internet and, today, the official photo gallery as well as the Press Release. Now we have a photo report of its actual unveiling, which has taken place today in Detroit, and a video shot there by our friends from Autoblog.it.

The new Ford Fusion represents yet another step forward in the implementation of the “One Ford” policy, the global strategy that the Blue Oval is putting into effect and that led to the release of identical Fiesta and Focus models on both sides of the Atlantic. Thereby, the new Fusion and its European counterpart, the Mondeo, are no longer going to bear just a very good likeness, they are going to be identical twins. This is the reason why the new Fusion is so interesting for the motorists living on this side of the pond: the new Mondeo should be introduced to the world within a couple of months, but we already know that it is going to be the same car, with just a different moniker.

However, one thing that might end up being different between the two models is the engine range. At the moment there are no news in regard to the European line up, but we know that the Fusion will initially take on the North American market with three engine options: a 2.5-litre 4-cylinder unit delivering 170 hp, a 1.6-litre EcoBoost unit delivering 179 hp and a 2.0 EcoBoost producing 237 hp, with the all-wheel drive configuration available only for the 2.0 engine. These are good cues for sure.

Ford Fusion/Mondeo: official photo gallery and info now available

Ford presenta la Fusion, modello globale che in Europa prenderà il nome di Mondeo

Just hours before its unveiling at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit - and in the wake of the two leaked images we published yesterday - Ford releases a massive photo gallery and the official press release of the new Ford Fusion, the model known as ‘Mondeo’ in Europe. As we noticed when the first leaks came out, the model is indeed quite reminiscent of the Ford Evos concept we had admired in Frankfurt a few months back, with its Aston Martin-ish front end and its sporty rear end. The Ford Fusion model year 2013 will come with a range of petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains that covers any kind of demand. The engine options initially available will be a naturally aspirated 170 hp 2.5-litre 4-cylinder unit, a 1.6-litre EcoBoost unit delivering 179 hp and a 2.0 EcoBoost producing 237 hp, with all-wheel drive configuration available only for the latter. As for the transmission, both the 2.5 and 1.6 will get a 6-speed automatic gearbox - although a manual option will also be made available for the latter - while the 2.0 will be coupled to a SelectShift 6-speed automatic.

By the time the new Fusion will hit the showrooms next fall, a 185 hp hybrid version will join the fold with a 2.0 litre petrol engine based on the 2.5-litre unit of the current Fusion Hybrid. Ford says that this version will be able to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) using electric power only, claiming an average fuel consumption of 5 l/100km. A plug-in hybrid version of the model called Fusion Energi will then become available at a later time, boasting a total range of 800 km which would make it as thirsty as a Toyota Prius.

The 2013 Ford Fusion will come with all sorts of electronic functions and devices that you might expect in a car of its class. Lane keeping system, adaptive cruise control, active park assist, start-stop technology and blind spot information system are all parts of the package. The passenger compartment is modern and elegant, offers several options for its customization and uses the latest version of the MyFordTouch info-tainment system, which allows drivers to control all the functions of the vehicle by a touch screen or through vocal commands. As for yet, no word on pricing. To know more about the 2013 Ford Fusion/Mondeo, check out the official Press Release after the jump.

Ford Fusion/Mondeo leaks on the web

By Adrian

Ford Fusion/Mondeo leaks

Czech website Auto Forum has published a couple of images of the 2013 Ford Fusion just hours ahead of its official unveiling at the North American international Auto Show, that will open its doors to the press tomorrow. The new mid-sized Sedan from the American carmaker (sold in Europe as ‘Mondeo’). The images are a little grainy, but nonetheless they provide us with a decent view of the car’s front side. The new Mondeo turn out to be quite similar to the Ford Evos concept we had seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show a few months ago, especially in such details as the shape of both grille and headlights as well as the general layout of the front end. This is all we can say for now, but we will definitely know more about the new Fusion by this time tomorrow.

2013 Ford Mondeo/Fusion: spy shots

By Adrian

Ford Mondeo Wagon mule

Mules of the upcoming 2013 Ford Mondeo/Fusion in sedan form have already been spotted before, but now we can see also the wagon version of the car, caught by photografers while being tested in the snowy Alps. The design for the Mondeo/Fusion is said to be inspired by the Ford Evos Concept on display at the recent 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, but to see the end result we will probably have to wait until the second half of 2012, when it will be officially launched.

In Europe the wagon variation of the Mondeo was a success - it is in fact the most sold version of the whole Mondeo line - but at the moment it is not clear whether the wagon version of the Fusion (Mondeo’s American counterpart) will eventually be marketed in the US. Rumor has it that there will be a Hybrid version too, which will be unveiled shortly after the official debut.

New Ford Mondeo to debut at 2012 Detroit Auto Show

By Adrian

Ford - Salone di Francoforte Live 2011

As anticipated by EmgCarTech.com, Ford might unveil Mondeo’s next generation at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show in January. The car is bound to become a global model, replacing its current version in Europe and the Fusion model in the United States (not to be confused with Fiesta-derived model available in Europe with the same name). Its aesthetics should be inspired by the intriguing Evos concept (pictured) showcased a few days ago at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, with the obvious exception of the fancy gullwing doors. Newly designed headlights and front-end as well as a reduced ride height will provide this care with an altogheter different image, giving it a more sporty flavor.

Hybrid plug-in versions based on Evos’ mechanics are also in the cards, completing the engines’ line-up that will also include the already well-known Ecoboost petrol engines and the diesel engines that are just “mandatory” for European markets. Technology-wise, many elements such as the MyFord infotainment system and the torque vectoring control will be borrowed from another global model, the new Focus. Although no information was given as for when the car will actually hit the showrooms, rumor has it the new Mondeo will actually enter the marketplace in the second half of next year.

Ford Mondeo Coupé: quattro porte per rompere la monotonia

By translator
