McLaren MP4-12C: new Shooting-Brake saloon

By Elxwave

McLaren MP4-12C: arriva la variante Shooting-Brake?

McLaren is working on a new Shooting Brake sports car, built on a carbon and aluminum chassis based on the MP4-12C model: according to the latest rumours, the car will be conceptually inspired by the Ferrari FF, but with a competitive price of around £150,000.

Compared to the Italian, the British saloon with rear-wheel drive will sport only two seats, however providing a larger boot space. The engine will be a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 with output of 600 hp, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in around 3 seconds reaching a top speed of 325 km/h.

Green Ferrari FF: how do you like it?

By Adrian

Ferrari FF: vi piace in tinta verde pisello opaco?

Here is yet another Ferrari with a quite unusual paint job. The matt green livery of this Ferrari FF uses exactly the same color of a green 599 model that Hy-Kers took at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Apparently, the Russian owner of the pictured FF just fell in love with that color when he saw it at the Swiss event last year, so much so that he decided to paint his own FF with it and, just like that special 599 it drags inspiration from, this green FF also uses burnished alloy wheels

We feel that this color might be more suitable for a Lambo, as the extreme design and philosophy behind them is more prone to this kind of pastel colors, whereas some Ferrari model (such as the FF) have a more “elegant” and “sober” feel that seem to advise against the adoption of certain fancy color schemes, but we have the admit that the final result as shown on these pictures is not too bad, all in all. However, there’s no accounting for taste.

Ferrari Goodwood videos

By Alison

The 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed for Ferrari saw the company take its new Ferrari FF off to England, and in these videos we also get a drive of the Ferrari F10 Formula 1 up the Lord March hill with Marc Gené. Another video also shows a test of a 1953 Ferrari 375MM which an Austrian collector brought along to the festival. If you didn’t think the Ferrari FF was a “real” Ferrari, the video after the jump might nearly make you change your mind.

Ferrari FF tuning by DMC

By Alison

Ferrari FF Maximus tuning by DMC

The first Ferrari FF tuning is by DMC and is called Maximus. It would take a while to get used to us calling the new all-wheel drive shooting brake Ferrari FF “Maximus” so we don’t think we’ll try. The FF tuning gets a new aerodynamic kit with updated bumpers, side skirts, and carbonfibre rear diffusor and wing. The tuner says that using carbonfibre for these parts saves about 70 kg off the original weight of the car.

DMC is going beyond just stylistic modifications, working on the six-litre V12 by adding a twinturbo kit with turbine, intercooler and new electronics system. A new FF exhaust is also being worked on with 90mm outlets, and all-new injectors, aspirated units and air filters. The expected result is 888 hp and 862 Nm of torque. Did we say “wow”? It looks like the Ferrari FF could become the new love-child of Ferrari tuners, and we can forget just lowered kits - the kind of technological innovation that can be played with could prove impressive.

Autocar test drives Ferrar FF: video

By Alison

The Ferrari FF isn’t easy to evaluate, it seems. Not quite a Ferrari, and yet still in keeping with some elements of the character of a Ferrari. Combining the world’s most famous sports car with a grand tourer can’t have been easy and we wonder whether Ferrari, with its new four-wheel drive shooting brake, ever intended the FF to have the driving feel of a ‘normal’ Ferrari or whether they wanted to go completely radical.

If you’re a purist the FF would still have to feel like a Ferrari, but then you probably wouldn’t buy one of these. But could the FF appeal both to traditionalists and to first-time Ferrari purchasers who never had an offering in the grand tourer segment by the Italian supercar manufacturer? And if so, would they still be looking for the same driving characteristics as someone already familiar with what a Ferrari feels like?

The four-wheel drive FF system is nothing short of impressive, with a selective distribution of power to the front axle when required. What actually happens is that we get excellent power and speed across a range of revs with the traction control not really interrupting power output at all. The other to bear in mind with the FF is that it has kept a fast, sports steering which is not quite in character with the grand tourer idea.

Apart from that, in the end the Ferrari FF needs to be evaluated not just as a Ferrari but whether it meets this ‘GT’ label. It has roomy rear seats and sufficient space in the boot, and Autocar concludes that it’s a “credible grand tourer”. Despite its 651 hp, it’s relatively easy to drive without being intimidating. Not quite a Ferrari in terms of its excitement to drive, Autocar says the FF doesn’t have a direct competitor, (although we think Maserati could have produced something), and that could give it the edge required, if not the novelty of it.

Lamborghini Estoque shooting brake rendering: Lamborghini makes its own wagon

By Alison

Lamborghini_Estoque_shooting_brake_rendering

The Ferrari FF has beat Lamborghini to the family-friendly supercar scene with its four-door, all-wheel drive shooting brake and while the Lamborghini Estoque made it to concept, the company has since hedged its bets on whether to produce that model. So here is Car and Driver to the rescue with a rendering of what a Lamborghini Estoque shooting brake might look like to compete with the Ferrari FF.

The debate about whether these are the kinds of cars we want our supercar manufacturers to make got suddenly obsolete at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show when Ferrari unveiled its FF. And like the Porsche Cayenne and Panamera, we doubt that the Ferrari FF is just a passing fad. When a company like Ferrari invests, it doesn’t do so on a model that is trendy one year and gone the next.

So will Lamborghini follow suit? It’s highly likely that the raging bull company will consider something to compete with the FF and it’s already got its Estoque concept to work off. While a Lamborghini wagon might not be the supercar you see yourself in with the mistress, if Ferrari makes a sales run with this, we’ll be expecting Lamborghini to have a go, too. After all, there will be Lambo fans out there who will forego the FF for a future shooting brake of their own.

Live pics of Ferrar FF: Fiat to 90% of Ferrari ownership

By Alison

Ferrari FF live pics from Italy

These exclusive live pics of the Ferrari FF come from our colleagues at Autoblog.it and show the FF looking lovely in the snow in Italy’s Val Gardena area. The model was parked outside a famous restaurant and was being guarded by Ferrari people and a journalist from Italy’s RAI national news agency.

In the meantime, Fiat bought back another 5 percent of Ferrari shares, spending 122.4 million euros to reach a total of 90 percent stock holding. The amount is equivalent to 400,000 shares and Fiat bought the additional stock from the “Mubadala” Abu Dhabi investment fund.

By Alison

Ferrari_FF_configurator_online

The Ferrari FF configurator is online so that the majority of us can play with our dreams. In fact, the configurator is a useful way for us to check out the FF design further and perhaps appreciate it a little more. There is a wide range of colours both internal and external and accessories include a dedicated luggage set and light alloy wheels. We know all there is to know by now about the FF, including its 4RM all-wheel drive system and boot capacity. And that’s something we can’t write about Ferrari every day. See more in the various pics below including the FF in the desert and at the top of the alps.

Ferrari FF gets helicopter ski resort debut

By Alison

Ferrari FF helicopter Dolomites delivery

The Ferrari FF all-wheel drive grand tourer gets a stunning media debut, delivered by Italian air force helicopters to the top of an Alpine ski resort. We’re getting used to the new-look Ferrari shooting brake and frankly, these lovely pics, after the FF played in the desert, only help it show off. The Ferrari FF was deposited at the Plan de Corones ski resort, at 2,350 metres, where a special ice and snow track had been prepared. The ski area can be reached only by chairlifts, so the FF was delivered by a Chinook CH-47 helicopter from the Viterbo Antares 1st Regiment. See more pics below and the FF video after the jump.

Ferrari FF engine and all-wheel drive video

By Alison

This animated video explains how the Ferrari FF engine and all-wheel drive technology works. On seeing this, we wonder if we didn’t get a little distracted by the radical shooting brake design and miss the point slightly. The Ferrari FF has a new 4RM all-wheel drive system that only works part-time. Amongst the video explanation is the key to the system - torque is individually distributed to each of the four wheels.

That means that this should be the best handling Ferrari for certain road conditions that previously the supercar manufacturer couldn’t hope to meet. The four-seater, four-door FF with its shooting brake rear (and corresponding boot space), might bring Ferrari into a new segment in terms of its family-friendliness. But as we’ve said before, and Ferrari itself has revealed, given the innovative drivetrain, this could finally bring the world famous Italian supercar brand to new markets where weather conditions previously prohibited the purchase of a Ferrari.

Ferrari FF new pics from the desert

Ferrari FF new desert pics

We saw the Ferrari FF live at Geneva, we’ve seen the full FF details and here are some new pics of it in a desert playground. After the initial shock of the shooting brake design, we can now actually focus on how much sense it makes for Ferrari to have developed an all-wheel drive platform for one of its supercars. And after seeing the Ferrari FF in the snow and now in the sand, it’s clear that the company wants to focus on this message. Check it all out below.
