Historic designer Sergio Scaglietti passes away

By Adrian

sergio scaglietti

Legendary designer and Enzo Ferrari’s favourite body-maker, Sergio Scaglietti died today in his house in Modena, aged 91. Born in 1920, he got to know and work with Enzo Ferrari in the late 30s, and in 1951 he founded the famous Carrozzeria Scaglietti - placed right in front of Ferrari’s plant in Maranello - which had been responsible for the the design of most Ferrari’s racing models of the 50s and 60s. Among his most famous creations we need to mention 1957’s 250 California Spider, 1958’s 250 Testa Rossa and 1962’s 250 GTO.

Sergio Scaglietti was not only Enzo Ferrari’s coachbuilder of choice, he was also one of the few autentic friends of the “Drake”. To pay homage to Sergio Scaglietti’s contribution to its history, Ferrari even named its 2004’s 612 Coupe model after him.

Ferrari FF video, pics and details

By Alison

Ferrari FF first pics

The Ferrari FF, replacement to the 612 Scaglietti, is likely to be a love it or hate it affair. While difficult to build a new four-seater Ferrari the shooting brake design, which we had originally said was possibly not going to appear, is not only radical but also remarkably practical for Ferrari - a brand that can generally do away with concepts of practicality. In fact, the new Ferrari FF is about as family friendly (is that what the letters stand for?) as a Ferrari is likely to get with four seats, the rear boot capacity of a hatchback and an all-wheel drive system.

Its design will likely be the focal point of any discussion over the FF, and although likely to polerise opinions, it’s got sporty looks, modern style and the overall elegance of a sports tourer. Designed by Pininfarina and Ferrari’s style centre, the new FF is going to get away with its more radical take on Ferraris of the past, without probably ushering in a new era of design. After all, this shooting brake Ferrari is great as a 612 Scaglietti for the modern era, but we can hardly see the company going too far down this path with other models.

The FF measures 4.91 metres long, 1.95 metres wide and 1.38 high, and weighs 1,790 kg (dry). The weight distribution is 47:53 and the weight-power ratio is 2.7 kg/hp. The mechanical set-up and technology is a complex affair, with Ferrari’s new 4RM all-wheel drive making an appearance, as well as the HELE start&stop system. The drive system is said to be much lighter than a more conventional four-wheel drive system, and Ferrari has employed electronic torque distribution individually controlled for each wheel.

New Ferrari 612 Scaglietti at Geneva show but no hybrid technology?

By Alison

Ferrari_599_GTB_hybrid_concept

After declarations that a new Ferrari to appear at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show will be a next generation model showing off some modern, ecological technology to keep in step with the times, reports are that the new model could be the next Ferrari 612 Scaglietti but that it might not have the hybrid technology planned. With interest growing in the “new Ferrari” as promised by Luca di Montezemolo, we can’t be sure that it will be labelled the new 612 Scaglietti, but that it will mark a technological evolution seems likely with rumours of a new shooting brake body style denied.

Reports from fan forums and Autoblog.nl indicate that the new Ferrari is codenamed F151 and that it should adopt electronically-controlled all-wheel drive technology. Apparently this system works only at higher speeds to guarantee the best stability and traction control, contrary to current logic which adopts more traditional modes of power and torque distribution in acceleration.

We could see a 6.3-litre V12 installed, with 670 hp and a dual-clutch, seven-speed transmission. This could result in performance figures of acceleration to 100 km/hr of just 3.7 seconds and about 330 km/hr of top speed. That makes this F151 superior to the current 612 Scaglietti model. The mystery still remains as to whether we will see the first production Ferrari hybrid model, where original rumours had combined power from both the engine and electric motor of about 650 hp. The all-wheel drive technology makes sense in this contest but we’ll have to wait for the Geneva show for more details.

New Ferraris from 2011-2012: from the Enzo replacement to the 612 Scaglietti hybrid

By Alison

Ferrari 599 GTO

Reports suggest that Ferrari could reveal five new models from 2011 to 2012 as it replaces older models and starts to roll out both hybrid and performance-oriented vehicles. The first model we’ll apparently be seeing is the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti replacement. Known as the F151 at the moment, it is expected to appear at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March. It will be the first Ferrari hybrid production model and will be equipped with a V12 with 550 hp matched to two 100-hp electric motors. They will reduce fuel consumption and emissions by up to 35 percent.

The new Ferrari 458 Challenge will also be present at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and it should prove to be an exciting model for purists of the brand. At Frankfurt we’ll be seeing the Ferrari 458 Spider which could debut with a fancy glass roof. In any case, as the name suggests, it’s the open-top version of the standard 458. 2012 could see the heir to the Ferrari Enzo appear with a twinturbo V8.

In acknowledgement of the Chinese market, production of the Enzo could also take place locally. Then in the second half of 2012 the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano replacement will appear. It’s currently codenamed the F152. If all this is to be believed, it will be a busy couple of years for Ferrari. We’re keen to see what they come up with.

Ferrari hybrid confirmed: more 612 Scaglietti spy shots

By Alison

More 612 Scaglietti spy shots

After the first round of Ferrari 612 Scaglietti spy shots and the famous bulge in the bonnet, the first Ferrari all-wheel drive hybrid technology is reportedly being developed as more spy shots emerge. The new Ferrari hybrid could appear on the next generation 612 with electric motors powering the front wheels, and the traditional V12 or a turbocharged V8 delivering power to the rear.

Ferrari has denied that the aim is to improve fuel efficiency, saying the system is being developed to enable better handling, though it’s hard to deny that even supercar manufacturers are under pressure to watch their emissions. The news comes from unnamed sources to Autocar, and would seem to confirm the leaked Ferrari hybrid designs of a few months back.

Next generation Ferrari 612 Scaglietti spy shots

By Alison

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti spy shots

After a five-year career, spy shots of the new Ferrari 612 Scaglietti have appeared, showing a test mule near Maranello. While a more modern and nastier look is likely to be the focus, we could also see some new engine options, with Ferrari experimenting with its environmental qualifications on this very model.

According to reports, key changes to the body kit of the car mean this 612 Scaglietti could be fitted with quite a different powertrain. A longer nose and wheelbase, bump in the bonnet and heavily modified exhaust mean this is more than just a touch-up job.

The new 612 Scaglietti should debut sometime in 2011, possibly with a new V12 engine, although the 533 hp is likely to remain roughly that. The aim is to become greener, lowering emissions and fuel consumption, and possibly even using Ferrari’s Insertable 4×4 system or creating the first Ferrari hybrid.

New Ferrari 600 GTB: 612 Scaglietti evolves

By Alison

New Ferrari 600 GTB

The words “600 GTB Coming Soon” appeared for a few brief minutes on Ferrari’s press site, but the appearance has since been denied by Ferrari. The 600 GTB could be the evolution of the 612 Scaglietti, of which we’ve seen some spy shots.

The plan for the new 612 Scaglietti is to reduce significantly fuel consumption and emissions without impacting adversely on performance. According to some reports, the GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) could also be a development on the 599 Fiorano, with modifications to the V12 engine.

The new Ferrari 458 Italia seems to be the inspiration for most of this work, with the 4.5 litre V8 engine at 570 hp producing 320 g/km of CO2 and consuming 13.7 litres of fuel per 100 km.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti restyling details

By Alison

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti restyling

After the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti spy shot, more details have been released regarding the updated model. In addition to the changes in the headlights and the line of the bonnet, the major renovations have been done to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, currently at 470 g/km.

While it feels strange to be talking about fuel consumption and emissions with a 12 cylinder under the bonnet, they have become a keen priority even for the Ferrari supercar category.

The rest of the 612 Scaglietti should remain the same, including the current 5.7 litre V12 engine with 540 hp. Top speed is 320 km/hr and only 4.2 seconds to reach 100 km/hr. The presentation is expected for the 2010 Geneva motor show, with sales to start in summer of that year.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti restyling

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti has taken on a few changes, looking more like a 599 to cover its age. After six years, the 612 has a redesigned front and air intakes, as seen in these 612 spy shots from Auto Week.

The 612 Scaglietti will continue until 2011, when it will eventually be substituted by a brand new coupé designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. According to reports, the next Scaglietti will consume just 12.3 l/100 km compared to the current 20.5.

Ferrari "One Off": new information on custom-built models

By Alison

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti One to One

In the July issue of the EVO magazine, the Ferrari “one-off” project has been revisited - a project that creates real and unique models. We had already seen that Ferrari was interested in launching new projects with the best international automobile signatures, and this news confirms the rumours.

In addition to the One to One scaglietti personalisation program whereby customers can choose finishes, colours and accessories, planned for the entire Ferrari range in the future, there will also be the possibility of having your own custom series. Armed with at least two million euros, according to the source, the customer will choose a model currently in production and from this basis, his own car will emerge.

Chassis, engine and airbag will have to remain the same, while the rest can be exclusively designed and created, and all the materials will be delivered to the customer. No SUVs, station wagons or sedans are the only requests from the company, so putting paid to the rumours of recent months.

Ferrari presents its personalisation program One to One on the 612 Scaglietti

By Alison

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti One to One

Ferrari has recently presented a special 612 Scaglietti, with the aim of revealing a new personalisation program, One to One, announced in Geneva. The news was released at the showroom on Park Avenue, New York, and will allow customers of the Cavallino gt to create, down to the last detail, their own tailored Ferrari.

New options include what was already available with the “Programma Carrozzeria Scaglietti” (Scaglietti body-work program), launched in 2006, increasing the possible combinations. At Maranello there will even be a dedicated area where customers can tinker with their choices, almost as in a dream fun park.

The 612 that was shown off for this interesting program was equipped with many pearls, from the electro-chromatic roof (like that of the 575M Superamerica), down to a series of mechanical updates such as the Superfast shift, lighter clutch and the Manettino, inherited from the more sporty Maranello models.
