Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano vs Ferrari F40 video

By Alison

This in-house Ferrari battle pits the 599 GTB Fiorano against the F40 in what is described by Ferrari as the “duel for the crown”. It’s three minutes no Ferrari fan wants to miss. The older Ferrari might not be up to the technical challenge, but it has its own charm with that spikey, angular look and a traditional gear shift that purists will love.

The Ferrari F40 has a V8 engine with 478 hp and in the technical stats at the end of the video, Ferrari claims a sprint to 100 km/hr of 4.1 seconds. It’s hard to make a comparison when age is a factor, but the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano obviously comes in less at 3.7 seconds and has 620 hp from its V12. The video shows just how fast both these models can go.

Vorsteiner Ferrari 599-VX tuning

By Alison

Vorsteiner Ferrari 599-VX

Vorsteiner has created a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano tuning kit inspired by the more extreme 599 GTO and 599 XX models. The Vorsteiner 599-VX gets new carbonfibre components, redesigned front bumpers, larger air intakes and a bonnet design from the 599 XX. That model’s inspiration also features on the rear of the new Vorsteiner Ferrari tuning with a new rear wing and extractor, new side skirts and alloy wheels designed exclusively for this model.

The new 599 GTB Fiorano livery can be matched to either a matte white or black roof. The new exhaust system features a higher twin exhaust created by BBI Autosport. The exhaust, together with a lowered suspension, are the only new technical aspects of this Ferrari 599 GTB tuning.

Rumours: Ferrari 599 GTB replacement

By Alison

Ferrari 599 GTO

The first rumours on the Ferrari 599 GTB replacement are appearing after the 612 Scaglietti and more recently, the Ferrari FF, have marked evolutions both in design and technology for the company. The new 599 GTB will likely be kept under the high performance GT banner.

The first rumours suggest that the 599 GTB heir will have 700 hp and will we find a V12 engine under the bonnet. Utmost priority is being given to performance and we’ll get classic rear-wheel drive. The rumours come from PistonHeads who suggest that the 599 GTB Fiorano replacement will be true to tradition, being a front-engined, 12-cylinder model, currently with no all-wheel drive planned.

That’s good news for anyone worried that the FF would start setting trends for all future Ferraris. The new model will borrow the 6.3-litre V12 FF engine but with a few changes. One significant update we should see is a reduction in weight: unsurprising given modern market requirements for supercars.

According to test driver Raffaele De Simone, ample carbon fibre will be used but not in structural parts. While future uses of Ferrari’s new all-wheel drive technology haven’t been excluded, the 599 replacement should be a pure, driver-oriented car. On the carbon fibre conundrum, De Simone says: “The history of aluminium isn’t finished yet. Structural carbon fibre parts still aren’t economically sustainable for a production of two to three cars a day.”

Ferrari SA Aperta: the 599 goes topless

By Alison

Ferrari SA Aperta

The Ferrari SA Aperta is the open-top version of the Ferrari 599 and will be officially presented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Not only is it a sexy little machine, it should also be a very sophisticated drophead example of the 599 with Ferrari claiming it has done plenty of chassis work to keep things stiff. The ‘SA’ acronym is for Sergio and Andrea Pininfarina, to whom this car is dedicated.

The SA Aperta will be equipped with the same 599 GTO V12 engine with 670 hp. The dedication to Pininfarina may have been a difficult one to pull off but Ferrari has done a good job with the rear roll bars incorporated into the profile of the seats, creating a smooth and sporty look. Only 80 of these will be produced and they’ve already been sold so we’ll be having a first and likely last look at this Ferrari at the Paris show - live pics to come later this week.

Ferrari 599 Spider spy shots

Ferrari 599 Spider spy shots

The Ferrari 599 Spider will be presented at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours but these spy shots show it round the traps at Maranello. Unfortunately, they still tell us very little else about the new 599 Spider before its August debut. The roof mechanism is still unknown and these shots, although the camouflage is not heavy and some slight detail can be seen, don’t reveal just what material will be used or how it will work.

It’s still a game of imagination, although given the clarity of these pics I won’t be surprised to see others spill onto the internet soon. So far the roof looks to be something similar to that of the P540 Superfast Aperta one-off presented last December, but let’s hope for some pics to satisfy our curiosity before August comes about.

Ferrari 599 GTO pics and details

By Alison

Ferrari 599 GTO

Ferrari has officially presented the new Ferrari 599 GTO and even the pics themselves show how performance-oriented it is. Based on the 599 GTB Fiorano, the 599 GTO uses the same six-litre V12 engine but with power up to 670 hp at 8,250 rpm (an increase from 620 hp). While we haven’t seen the 599 GTO get to the magic hp number of 700, dry weight is also down to 1,495 kg for a weight-power ratio of 2.23 kg/hp. Acceleration to 100 km/hr is achieved in 3.35 seconds and top speed is more than 335 km/hr.

To achieve these performance figures, the 599 GTO has composite fibre material and the thickness of the glass used has been reduced. The transmission is lighter and the exhaust system was built using a hydroform process. The 599 GTO aerodynamics are based on those of the 599 XX and have been modified to get downforce of 144 kg at 200 km/hr. The front of the car’s width has been reduced and a new splitter added along with air vents in the bonnet to improve the oil radiator cooling. A new diffuser and rear spoiler have also been added.

The V12 engine has 670 hp and 620 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. It complies with Euro 5 norms, which is incredible if you think about the performance. High rev performance has been improved with modifications to the aspiration system and the 599 GTO has an F1, six-speed transmission with shift time of 50 milliseconds. Average fuel consumption measures 17.5 l/100 km and CO2 emissions are 411 g/km.

Ferrari 599 GTO price

By Alison

Ferrari 599 GTO leaked pricing

The Ferrari 599 GTO pricing really makes this a car of your dreams and as we say we’re I’m from “tell ‘em they’re dreamin’”. The ‘entry-level’ 599 GTO will cost nearly 320,000 euros (including taxes) and if you want any of the mouth-watering options, you’ll have to have a very large bank loan approved.

The Ferrari 599 GTO with carbonfibre front spoiler costs an additional 3,350 euros, while more carbonfibre for the motor compartment will set you back another 7,775 euros. We recommend skipping anything that looks remotely like leather or Alcantara for the 599 GTO interior, and just go with the standard. At the price above, we hope the 599 GTO actually does come with seats.

But really, anyone who can actually afford this new Ferrari is unlikely to split hairs over the pricing of coloured brake calipers or the 7,176 euros needed for racing stripes painted on the side. So much for the economic crisis - all the 599 GTO models to be produced have already been sold. We’ll have more official spec details come April 7 when the official Ferrari 599 GTO presentation takes place.

Ferrari 599 GTO spy video from Nurburgring

By Alison

Here’s the first spy video of the Ferrari 599 GTO seen testing at the Nurburgring. Did we mention it’s going to be fast? The unofficial 670 hp can be heard in these brief but spine-tingling eight seconds. Check out all the unofficial 599 GTO technical specs in our post from yesterday, and keep your fingers crossed that we will see this on April 7 as the date fixed for a possible presentation.

Ferrari 599 GTO presentation and details

By Alison

Ferrari 599 GTO rendering

According to rumours on the internet, the Ferrari 599 GTO presentation will take place on April 7, meaning it won’t be long before we see this extreme, track-focused Ferrari. According to AutoGespot, the Ferrari 599 GTO will have a new version of the six-litre V12 from the 599XX, and power could be up around 620 to 670 hp.

It looks like we still won’t reach the milestone of 700 hp, but in compensation impressive torque is also expected, between 610 and 620 Nm, and acceleration to 100 km/hr could take just 3.3 seconds. The “base” model version of the 599 takes 3.7 seconds, the Enzo 3.6 and the Ferrari 458 Italia takes 3.4 seconds, putting the 599 GTO figure in a natural sequence of evolution. Apparently 0-200 km could take just 9.8 seconds which is scary stuff, as far as I’m concerned.

We knew the Ferrari 599 GTO would be a hot performer, and if these figures are confirmed, they put it at the top of supercar performers. Even a weight reduction of 195 kg is expected, meaning the 599 GTO will weigh around 1,495 kg. Compared to the Ferrari 599XX the exhaust system also gets an overhaul, which could prove music to our ears.

Ferrari 599 Vettura Laboratorio live at Geneva

By Alison

Ferrari 599 Vettura Laboratorio live pics from Geneva

These live pics show the Ferrari 599 Vettura Laboratorio (laboratory vehicle) and the Ferrari California with new Stop&Start technology, both presented at the Geneva motor show. It’s all about Ferrari in green this year, with the 599 Vettura Laboratorio Hy-Kers the first of Ferrari’s hybrid projects.

It is a 12-cylinder model with electric motor (of more than 100 hp) that will contribute to Ferrari’s future need to reduce CO2 emissions and become more environmental. While we’re only in the initial phase, Ferrari president Montezemolo has said that the first Ferrari hybrid production vehicle will appear in the next three to four years.

The 599 Hy-Kers reduces CO2 emissions by 35 percent compared to the model it’s based on, and in the future its hybrid system could be transferred, as is, to V8 Ferrari models. The Ferrari California Stop&Start is another experiment with environmentally friendly technology, that has reduced CO2 emissions by six percent, to a total of 280 g/km.

Ferrari in green: 599 GTB Hybrid Concept at 2010 Geneva Motor Show

By Alison

Ferrari 599 GTB Hybrid concept

Ferrari’s first ever hybrid will be green all over, with the 599 GTB Hybrid soon to be presented at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. The new Ferrari hybrid will use recharge technology when braking in a model similar to the famous KERS system (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). It’s still uncertain as to how exactly the new Ferrari hybrid system will work, although we could be looking at an all-wheel-drive model with combined electric motors and batteries up front, and a supplementary fuel engine at the rear. The electric component should produce 100 hp and 149 Nm of torque, in addition to 620 hp from the V12 engine. More details, including live pics, will emerge at the Geneva show.
