Autocar tests the Citroen DS3 Racing and concludes that Citroen has managed to get a decent little hot hatch back into its range. With a “charming” engine, hot styling and some good handling, the Ds3 Racing is the kind of hatch model that you’ll buy if you really want some quirky, kick ass design. The interior is just as funky as the exterior, and it’s got that something extra over the standard Citroen DS3 which was already a nifty little car in its own right.
It’s not all perfect though, with some steering and driving precision proving difficult, particularly in the wet conditions of the video, and with the lower ride height being quite unforgiving when you want a more relaxing drive, or you’re on city streets (with all the associated pot holes that come with them). Still, the verdict is a very good hot hatch model, but we’re interested to find it can’t quite compete with its other French rival, the Renault Sport Clio. What’s more, while Citroen runs away with the hot hatch segment in the PSA Group, we can’t help wondering, and wistfully, after Peugeot and it’s past hot hatch models which went well beyond an orange and carbon fibre trim.

The Citroen DS5 could be revealed as early as the Shanghai motor show in April next year, in the guise of a concept model, before getting its official production-model debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, according to French publication L’Automobile Magazine. Apparently the DS5 is currently project-named the B81, and will take the form of Citroen’s new crossover model.
It should be shorter and higher than the C5 Tourer, measuring 460cm long and will most likely have a comfortable, five-seater interior and a minimum boot capacity of 450 litres. That’s quite technical stuff for what hasn’t been officially announced, but it makes sense for Citroen to be expanding its C5 range now and to develop its DS range as well. Apparently the DS5 will be based on the C-Sportlounge concept of 2005, but we’d expect something more modern and in keeping with the new DS badge to turn up.
Reports regarding the engine range are already emerging, with the 1.6 THP available in both 156 and 200 hp, accompanied by the 2.0 HDi with 140 or 163 hp, and the 2.2 HDi with 204 hp. A Hybrid4 all-wheel drive model should be available in the future, using the 2.0 HDi powerplant with an electric motor to achieve about 200 hp. The Citroen DS5 should cost about 27,000 euros. According to the French reports, its debut is being pushed ahead before the Citroen DS3 Cabriolet, which we could see appear in 2012.
Citroen is being careful with its release of the cabriolet so as not to hinder the sales of the three-door DS3 hatchback. The cabriolet model was originally planned for next year, but is being moved to 2012 instead. It should prove to be a traditional cabrio with a classic, soft top roof and not a folding metal piece. The latter will likely be reserved for the Peugeot 207 CC and the PSA group doesn’t want to overlap the models. The rendering above comes from the AutoJournal mag.
The Citroen DS3 Racing model with the orange roof is a bit lairy for out taste, but then if you want to make a statement in the hot hatch segment and not spend a heap of money while doing it, the DS3 Racing model might be for you. Here’s another video of the model as Citroen announces market availability across Europe of the 2,000 vehicles that will be made. At about 29,000 euros you can get the higher-spec version of the Citroen DS3 in black night and orange tones, or Absolut White with grey finish. The racing stickers and coordinated car mats are optional on this model, while the sports seats come standard.
The racing model gets a slightly wider and lower wheelbase, new bumpers, side skirts and carbon fibre finishes compared to the standard model, and is equipped with the 1.6 turbo engine with 202 hp and 275 Nm of torque. It gets to 100 km/hr in 6.5 seconds and has an average fuel consumption of 6.4 l/100 km, with emissions at about 149 g/km. Other features include 323 mm Brembo disc brakes, a remapped ESP system which can also be deactivated and a ride height lowered by 15mm. See more in the video and pics.
I’ll admit I was a little disappointed at some of the results from the 2011 European Car of the Year Award. Perhaps it’s because most electric cars don’t really excite the socks off me (the Nissan Leaf won this year and deservedly so by the sounds of it), or that we’re all gunning for the Alfa Giulietta to do well and get back some of that old Alfa glory, and perhaps also because I have a secret soft spot for the Citroen DS3. So here is Top Gear to remedy that for me, as the 2010 Top Gear Car of the Year Award goes to the hot little Citroen hatch.
We’ve heard that the DS3 is not exactly likely to blow your mind in terms of performance, but is rather, more akin to a tarted up version of the C3. In that case - what a tart! The Top Gear magazine says:
“The DS3 has pulled off that heady mix of ability, excitement and affordability that’s impossible to ignore. It walks so many fine lines so delicately and so comprehensively that it’s hard to find a chink in the armour. The Top Gear Car of the Year is a small, thoughtful, affordable, stylish, fun little hatchback. It’s the people’s champion.”
I’d consider buying one if that was the kind of car I needed. An acquaintance of mine recently went for a sky blue Citroen C3 model and I asked if they hadn’t considered the DS3 as so much cooler, more appealing and more entertaining. The answer: “It’s only got three doors.” Well, whatever….

Be still my beating heart! I always kind of liked the Citroen DS3 and this DS3 Racing model, driven by Sebastien Loeb, has got me sold. Cute guy, cute car….although I was up for a car chase that never happened. The DS3 Racing model is the more performance version of the DS3, equipped with a 1.6-litre THP with 202 hp. The DS3 is Citroen’s new WRC model and will be driven by Loeb in the next championship. You can see pics of the DS3 WRC model from our 2010 Paris motor show coverage.
We thought we’d get patriotic on behalf of the French and check out the the Citroen stand at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. The new Citroen C4 and Citroen DS4 are on display, as is the remarkable DS3 WRC model - it’s a real head-turner just for its paint job if nothing else. The five-door C4 is an elegant model, not particularly riské but then if you want something more eye-catching, Citroen is betting that you’ll go with the DS4. It’s got good looks even if interior comfort is perhaps not the best.
The Citroen C4 Picasso gets a restyling as well as the C5 with new headlights with LED technology. The Citroen Lacoste concept car is also on display as Citroen’s take on the partnership-with-a-stylist theme. The Lacoste looks like it could be a summer successor to the Mehari model, created strictly for free-time fun.

In what could be his last World Rally Championship, Sebastien Loeb will drive this Citroen DS3 WRC next year and while we only get a fleeting, in-the-dark glimpse of the car in this video, we can’t wait to see it revealed on September 30th. The 2011 Citroen rally model will be presented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show in what will be a busy event for French car manufacturers. Meanwhile, the WRC is getting awfully sexy, with the Mini Countryman competing next year as well. Bring it on!

Japanese style guru Kenzo has designed this Kenzo Citroen DS3, a one-off model that will go on auction for charity works. The model has been designed with pearl white colour and abstract motifs on the roof and seats. 14 years after Kenzo originally designed something for the Renault Twingo citycar, the DS3 is showing just how well it lends itself to this kind of creativity.
More news regarding European and Chinese collaboration in the auto sector comes the PSA group’s partnership with Chang’an autos. The agreement will see the Citroen DS3 and Peugeot 508 models produced in China as well, with the latter being produced at Wuhan facilities and debuting sometime in 2011.
The Citroen DS3 on the other hand, will constitute a third brand for the local Chinese car market and should debut in 2012. It’s seen as an important part of the 200,000 cars PSA and Chang’an intend to produce together and if its style is appreciated by the locals, it should be able to fulfill that role.

The Citroen DS3 will get a cabrio version and here is the first rendering of the open-top DS3. Reports from France say that the DS3 Cabrio will be available from 2011, bringing the date forward from 2012 to replace the Citreon C3 Pluriel which is to finish production soon.
The DS3 Cabriolet will be based on the Peugeot 207 CC and should see an improvement on the much-criticised style of the C3 Pluriel. It will have a fabric soft top as a vintage style in line with competitors like the Mini Cabrio and Fiat 500C. It is expected to cost about 3,000 euros more than the hard-top version and should have the same engine line-up as the current DS3.

The Citroen DS3 gets four stars in Autocar’s ‘90 second’ verdict, mostly compared to the Mini Cooper S and Fiat 500 as its main competitors. The entry level engine model is a respectable 1.4-litre 94 hp, while the top of the range is the 1.6 turbo with 154 hp. The big plus for the DS3 is that it’s got more rear passenger and boot room than either of its nominated rivals - the Fiat 500 on the boot front is particularly cosy. The DS3 is also said to be easier to drive with better steering feel and comfort than the Mini. While in some ways you could see the car as just a ‘tarted up’ version of the Citroen C3, it does have more performance and more style and personality which justify its higher cost than the C3.
I’m quite taken with the Citroen DS3 Racing, having a soft spot for anything remotely rally-ish, and here is a nice gallery of pics of the DS3 R, along with the details. A limited run of 1000 units of the Citroen DS3 R will be produced and will go on sale in the second half of this year. The DS3 Racing is equipped with the 1.6-litre THP engine with 200 hp and 275 Nm of torque. It’s quite the pocket rocket, in short.
Citroen has also concentrated on making the DS3 R style something special, with larger dimensions and a lowered wheel base. It measures 395 cm long, 174 cm wide and 145 cm tall. The orange and grey colour scheme will be present on all models, as will the carbonfibre finish used on the front bumper, side skirts and rear spoiler.
