Chris Bangle: supercar design should knock your balls off

By Alison

Chris Bangle has an insightful and entertaining take on modern supercar design in this video from CarDesignNews. Interviewed at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Bangle says a lot of things about supercar design that we suspect a few insiders and afficionados have been thinking for a while. But still, if supercar produces are protecting the design status quo there’s probably a reason for that.

Anyway, Bangle says that if supercars really want to push the boundaries they should start injecting some serious design innovation into the models. If a supercar is going to be about fast, hyperbolic performance, then it should have a design to match: something which knocks your balls off, in his words. It’s a great little video and not only is it entertaining, it should give some people in the car industry something to think about.

Chris Bangle back to Fiat?

By Alison

Fiat Coupe by Chris Bangle

Could Chris Bangle make a return to Fiat? The Italians are reporting that the American designer, famous for some of the more controversial BMW auto design, has opened a studio in Piedmont in Italy’s north and could be considering working with the Fiat group. It was Bangle who created the Fiat Coupé (despite the Pininfarina mark on the car), and the Alfa Romeo 145 from the 1990’s.

Bangle was head of the Fiat style centre from 1985 to 1992 and the reasons behind any return could be many: from a total rebranding of Fiat to touching up the models destined for the US market in light of the Fiat-Chrysler deal. He could also be charged with the responsibility of dusting off the Alfa and Lancia brands and giving them some more lustre for the new millennium, but so far the rumours haven’t been confirmed.

BMW GINA Light Visionary Concept Model: panel beating redefined

By Alison

Bmw GINA Light Visionary Concept Model

From a prototype defined as “visionary”, we can’t expect to be anything but surprised: and now BMW is presenting its studio-concept, the GINA Light Visionary Model, a softer car capable of changing its aspect according to the driver’s taste. The radical innovation is aimed at the formation of the bodywork.

The technical explanation is quite simple: an elasticised material covers a flexible metal mesh, that can be moved by an electro-hydraulic device. Even the interior can be modified by the movement of these panels. If you want a really good idea as to how this curiosity works, have a look at the video below.
