Bmw X2 will not become available until 2016

By Adrian

bmw x1

Bmw X2, the anticipated sporty 3-door variation of Bmw X1, will not become available until 2016. The current version of the X1 will be restyled in 2013 and will be replaced by an altogether new version in 2015. Then, a year later, its “coupe” version X2 will join in. It is the same strategy adopted by BMW for the X6 and that will be used again for the X3-derived X4.

This proliferation of sporty crossover and SUV models (or ‘SAV’ models, as BMW describes them) will also lead to a sort of little revolution as the new X1 and X2 will be developed on Mini’s platform, with rear or four wheel drive according to the version. The X2 will be available with the 3 door configuration only, just like Range Rover Evoque, and will feature 4 single seats in order to facilitate loading of bulky objects or sport gear. According to AutoBild, the future X1 is currently known as F48 while the X2 - which still needs the definitive go-ahead from BMW’s big bosses -is labeled F47. Engine range will feature the most recent turbocharged 4 cylinder diesel and petrol engines, but the arrival of future hybrid versions mounting a 3 cylinder engine has not been ruled out.

No BMW X1 for US

By Alison

Apparently European sales of the BMW X1 are going so well that nobody stateside is going to be seeing the model - until the X1 gets a 2013 restyling at least. The BWM X1 is on indefinite hold for the US car market due also to a weak euro-US dollar exchange rate. We’re not responsible for BMW business plans so perhaps it’s not our business anyway, but when you read stuff like this:

BMW isn’t worried about having American car shoppers waiting for their X1 since the automaker believes the X3 will remain its top-selling crossover.

you wonder why they’d bother at all. When the X3 is such a strong seller in general, the smaller X1 might not be missed at all. Which begs the question as to why this sudden explosion in small crossovers from the German manufacturers when the market may not be interested in absorbing them all anyway.

BMW Vision ConnectedDrive live at 2011 Geneva Motor Show

By Alison

Bmw: conferenza stampa Ginevra 2011

The BMW Vision ConnectedDrive concept has been revealed at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, appearing alongside the new BMW X1 xDrive28i. These live pics from Geneva show the Vision ConnectedDrive concept in all its glory, although it’s hard to know what to think about it. The Vision ConnectedDrive is a hot looking model, with plenty roadster fastness about it, but that’s not what it’s been intended for and the rest of its manifesto leaves us just slightly underwhelmed.

While the Vision ConnectedDrive concept is a precursor to the future BMW Z2 we’ll see, it has been put together to show off some technicolour bells and whistles from BMW. The interior has an HUD 3D display and various mood lighting which reflects the drive modes selected at any one time. Other than that, BMW didn’t really have too much to say, having already released the details of this model. What we can happily say is that the new design direction taking place with Adrian von Hooydonk at the helm is the striking style that BMW needed to emerge from the controversy of the Chris Bangle era.

The BMW X1 xDrive28i is equipped with BMW’s new four-cylinder engine. It’s a 2.0-litre turbo unit with 245 hp and 350 Nm of torque. This particular powertrain replaces the previous six-cylinder, three-litre unit and represents the new mid-range option. It also contributes to keeping emissions and fuel consumption down. This particular SUV is estimated as running at between 9.9 and 6.7 l/100 km. The TwinPower Turbo engine has a turbocompressor with technology such as twin-scroll and Valvetronic variable valve system. It will soon equip other models, including the BMW Z4.

BMW X3 and X1 commercials

By Alison

This BMW X3 commercial for the new generation is unashamedly lifestyle-oriented - get the car, get the life that goes with it. It’s a fun ad with lots happening and we like the take on the moon, too but overall it’s a bit overwhelming. BMW is using a new ‘Joy’ slogan, as seen in the BMW X1 commercial which you can view after the jump. It comes across as slightly more sophisticated and has a clear demographic of beautiful, young people to appeal to.

Bmw X1 - Immagini Ufficiali

Here are the first official shots of the BMW X1 which were leaked on the internet a few days ago. Coming up we will have the full details, technical specs and more galleries from BMW. On the whole it’s a well designed car, in proportion and a mix of both elegance and sports style. BMW has an ambitious sales target for the SUV, seeking to sell about 100,000 units a year. Whether they hit this target or not will largely depend on the success of the overall style of X1.

The X1 has been built on the base of the new generation of 1-Series and 3-Series, and five versions are planned for the market launch. These include the entry level xDrive18d and xDrive18i, equipped with four cylinder turbo diesel and petrol engines. The next step up involves the xDrive20d with the 2.0-litre turbo diesel at 177hp. The top-of-the-range offering includes the xDrive23d and xDrive28i with a four cylinder, 2.0-litre twin turbo diesel engine with 204 hp and 400 Nm for the former, and the six cylinder 3.0-litre petrol engine at 258 hp.

BMW X1: shedding its camouflage

By Julia

Nuove Foto Spia BMW X1

In anticipation of its official debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, here are the new “official” spy shots of the BMW X1, the compact SUV that will be competing in the market at the same time as the Volkswagen Tiguan and the upcoming Audi Q3. As you can see in the pictures, the compact SUV has begun to shed its camouflage and the prototype captured by the camera represents the definitive model. In fact, BMW showed off its X1 project in front of a plethora of journalists in Mallorca, Spain.

Based on the 3 Series platform and equipped with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the BMW X1 will be available beginning next October. When it is launched, it will be available in three gasoline engine options, with the similar possibilities in a diesel version: the four-cylinder 2.0-liter 143hp and 170 hp engine will equip the xDrive18i and the xDrive20i, respectively, while the xDrive30i will be powered by a six-cylinder 3.0-liter 265 hp engine. The diesel four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine will be available in three levels of power: 143 hp, 177 hp, and 204 hp. These will be identified by the xDrive18d, xDrive20d, and xDrive23d, respectively.

BMW X1 spy shots

By Alison

Foto spia Bmw X1

In testing of the BMW X1, we get a closer look at this crossover, with its rear end similar to the X5, while the rest takes after the concept car from which it derives. In these spy shots, limited camouflage further reveals what has already been seen.

In terms of driving style, Autobild so far have been the only ones to test drive the X1, saying that the feel and handling is much like the Series 3. The debut is planned for the next Frankfurt show.

X1, X3 and X4: it's raining SUVs and SAVs at BMW

By Alison

It’s seems that over in Munich they love the letter “x”. Despite purists of the BMW brand maybe scratching their heads, the company is seriosly intent on broadening its range of SUVs and SAVs.

The great success of the new X5 and the X6 is clear testimony to the heightened appeal of this type of car. In means that BMW certainly does not have any intention whatsoever of curbing its nvestment in such fertile niche markets.

In fact in 2010 it will be X1’s turn, the smallest of the BMW SUV’s whose dimensions place it halfway between the series 1, whose mechanics and platform it will use, and the series 3 touring. The new entry-level of the X range will have much a stylistic recall to its X6 sister. In particular the back-window and rear shape seen in camouflage phase, will be less truncated than the X5 and X3.
