BMW M5 F10: new official video

By Adrian

BMW released a new official video starring the new M5 F10. This high-quality footage shows the aggressive new sporty saloon from the German manufacturer - this time with a black livery - running on the countryside and on a track with plenty of tyre screeching, slow motion and sneaky images of many details. However, its impressive roar is probably the most impressive feature of the clip.

Bmw M5 F10 is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with Valvetronic and direct injection devolping its 680 Nm of maximum torque from 1,500 rpm and 560 hp between 6,000 and 7,000 rpm. Obviously, its performance figures are just as impressive: 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in about 4,4 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 13 seconds flat and top speed of 305 km/h (with M Driver’s Package). BMW claims an average fuel consumption of 9,9 l/100 km - which is 30% less than its predecessor - thanks to the EfficientDynamics package that includes start-stop system and KERS.

Bmw M5 F10 with manual gearbox to be available in the US

By Adrian

M5 gearbox

A version of the new BMW M5 F10 with manual transmission will actually be made available on the American market. Just like the old E60 V10, this model was designed to accommodate a sports automatic gearbox, but in the US - which are the most important market for the M line - there is still a demand for good old manual gearbox, a fact that prompted BMW to make the decision. According to Autoblog.nl, Head of Development for the Motorsport division Albert Biermann said that BMW engineers had to work hard on the new Twin Turbo V8 (delivering 560 hp and 680 Nm) in order to have the manual transmission fitting in. Biermann clearly admitted that the job took a lot of commitment and required a long development, but the outcome is so technically advanced that the solution might be taken into consideration for future projects.

Because of the internal frictions, the M5 with manual transmission will be less effective than the version equipped with BMW’s own 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT-7), meaning that it will be more difficult to control and, all in all, slower. This doesn’t mean that the F10 will be the last M5 ever with manual gearbox but, given the potential of the new generation of automatic transmission, it might as well be. Especially with a new all-wheel drive version in the making and in the light of BMW Motorsport division’s future plans.

BMW M5: official photos

BMW M5: nuove foto ufficiali

Five times BMW M5: first launched in 1984, BMW’s sporty saloon car just got to its 5th generation with the new model introduced just a few days ago at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Although loyal to its own tradition, the new M5 shows a number of innovations that sets it apart from its predecessor. The most significant change of them all can be found under the bonnet.

As you might know, the M5 is now turbocharged. It will have a powerful 4.4 V8 twin turbo engine with Valvetronic and direct injection: very consistent at low revs (680 Nm at 1500 rpm), it boasts great acceleration. It unleashes its full 560hp power between 6000 and 7000rpm, and redlines at 7200rpm.

As for its performance: acceleration 0-100km/h in 4,4 s, 0-200km/h in 13,0 s, 305 km/h top speed with the M-Drivers-Package. BMW claims that the new M5’s average fuel consumption is 9,9 l/100 km, which is 30% less in comparison to the previous M5 thanks to the EfficientDynamics package, which features the start&stop function as well as a KERS.

Stand Bmw - Salone di Francoforte Live 2011

BMW has come to the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show with a bag full of surprises and novelties, and you can tell that this maker is aiming to produce remarkably innovative vehicles without underestimating the importance of being environmentally friendly. The i3 and i8 have just debuted, preparing the ground for future electric models as well as this range’s hybrids.

They have been developed employing aluminium as well as CFRP to minimize their overall mass and in the case of the i3, Reinhofer confirmed that it’s going to become reality by the end of 2012, while the i8 will follow in the next few years.

Other very interesting BMW models have been premiered at the show such as the new 1-series F20, the M5 F10 featuring a 560 HP V8 as well as the 313 HP 640d and the 116d Efficient Dynamics boasting CO2 emissions of 99 g/km di Co2. The future versions M-Sport and Performance Studio of the 1-series also have been unveiled, as well as the Z4 with a four-cylinders Turbo Twin-power.

BMW M5 Green Hell Nurburgring video

By Alison

Unfortunately we weren’t among the lucky guests of the BMW M5 Nurburgring “fly and drive” Grenn Hell test drive event of the new M5, and just to rub things in, here is a video of what the chosen enjoyed - helicopter rides, a little drive in the M5 before heading to the legendary Nurburgring to thrash it out on the track. The conclusion? “It’s an astonishing car.” My only gripe is why ‘the chosen’ were all men (meaning I am the first to candidate myself if they ever repeat this with a women’s only drive….please!).

BMW M5 behind-the-scenes videos

By Alison

These videos from BMWblog give us a full technical tour of the new BMW M5. After a quick run-down of how electronics have changed, we actually get a look under the M5 and a talk of the chassis updates and the suspension upgrades. From the video it’s clear that the BMW M5 has undergone some significant changes, especially using race car experience - making the body more rigid, the suspension smoother and fixing the axles and struts directly to the body itself.

The video says that while BMW M models might weigh a little bit more than other models, their rigidity and new improvements to steering and suspension mean they actually handle better than the competition. We’re happy to believe them. Check out the video for the full tour of the M5, particularly if the technical stuff is up your alley. More videos after the jump.

New BMW M5 video

By Alison

In this official video of the new BMW M5 we get some track action from the car and can only conclude that BMW does a mighty fine job with its super sedans. We get to hear plenty of the 4.4-litre V8 get around the track, whose 560 hp and 680 Nm of torque might be too much for the ordinary joe, but on a track ride you can at least enjoy all of them.

The M5 gets plenty of new electronics with a dual-clutch M DCT seven-speed gearbox and Active M multiple disc rear differential. The steering wheel gets an ‘M’ control button for suspension, engine mapping and gear change settings, and there is a new display for the setup in use. With the optional M Driver’s Package, you can take top speed from 250 to 305 km/hr.

New BMW M5 video commercial

By Alison

From the eerie atmosphere of empty street scenes we thought we were just getting a luxury elegance message in this new BMW M5 commercial. But then the supersedan takes a drive out of the city and we get a brief waft of engine sound as it shows off its sportier side. Still, after the BMW M3 and 1M coupe, the new M5 is definitely the more executive in the M Sport line-up, despite its impressive 7.55 lap time on the Nurburgring.
