Well! Mission Impossible 4 has Tom Cruise, Eminem rap, the Mission Impossible theme, hot women and the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept as an i8 preview. And that’s a lot to pack into just the trailer. Confirming that we will see the new BMW i8 in the Mission Impossible fourth instalment is this video, although it still looks very much in concept phase to us (the car, not the film). BMW has plans to produce the i8 based on its Vision concept, with limited modifications so the film could just be an early advertising opportunity for the German car marker. Oh, and there’s also the new BMW 6 Series cabriolet which gets destroyed.
BMW’s love affair with its 6 Series Cabrio model continues with this new flurry of pics. The model appears in the range next to the recently released 6 Series Coupé and will be released with two engine options: the 650i has an eight-cylinder unit with 407 hp, and the 640i has a six-cylinder with 320 hp. Both are equipped with TwinPower Turbo, direct injection, Valvetronic management system, start&stop and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The BMW 6 Series cabriolet is equipped with some of the more luxury aspects of BMW technology including Dynamic Driving Control, and Adaptive Drive and Integral Active Steering as options. On the inside, the Head-Up Display is part of the ConnectedDrive package with a series of options ranging from rear-view reverse camera and Park Assistant.
The Head-Up Display is part of a new cabin look for BMW on the 6 Series cabrio, and the large control display in the central console is the feature. It shows navigation, mobile and entertainment functions and sits in a new chrome detail design. In the huge 6 Series cabrio gallery below, you can see the the interior and more beauty shots of the boat-like creation.
BMW has gone overboard in its latest gallery dedicated to its 6 Series cabrio model but here you go - you can see all 132 images by clicking on the gallery. The press release is also rather long, as is the model itself and BMW could have perhaps avoided using words like “stretch” in the release; but still, we’re convinced by most of the hyperbole that the 6 Series is an example of a beautiful convertible.
That the new BMW 6 Series cabriolet is a looker is obvious, and the soft-top “fin” roof design looks just as good up as down. The model will be available from launch date in the 650i and 640i versions. The former has an eight-cylinder engine with 407 hp, and the latter a six-cylinder unit with 320 hp. Both come with an eight-speed sports automatic gearbox. The 640i also comes with start&stop technology.
Luxury features include a head-up display, individually tailored seats for all four occupants, a driver-oriented layout in the front with iDrive entertainment and navigation system, and the option of a 10.2-inch screen, up from seven. Other options include Nappa leather trim and upholstery, sports or comfort seats, active steering technology, added suspension options and a range of ConnectedDrive gadgets including lane change warning, night vision and rear view camera. See all the details in the long press release after the jump.
BMW certainly gave us a treat at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, bringing along its sexy burnt orange 1 Series M coupé, together with the 1 Series coupé and cabriolet restyling and the sleek new BMW 6 Series cabriolet. The model on show is the 650i convertible with its direct-injected 4.4-litre V8 which produces 400 hp. It will go on sale in the US in spring and will cost a pretty penny at nearly 92,000 USD. It’s a good looking model but it would want to be at that price. Still, BMW will be gunning for luxury convertible buyers for summer and you couldn’t get much better looking than this. See the models in our live pics below.
The BMW 6 Series Cabriolet video gives us a closer look at the design of the new generation. Longer than the previous generation, the length seems to stand out (and the cute rear camera hidden in the BMW badge puts us in mind of James Bond), although it gives the new 6 Series cabrio a slightly retro look which is not displeasing. The static and dynamic footage in the video shows us the interior and it’s here that we can see where BMW has done its work. Filmed in this setting, it’s clear the new 6 Series cabrio has been designed with Mediterranean pastures in mind, and all we can say is that if we were in the market for a new, large cabrio and had some money to spend, we might just look at this sleek cabrio as an option.
Here are all the pics of the new BMW 6 Series cabriolet, showing off the elegant soft top from just about every angle. The cabrio version has been released before the new 6 Series hard top and will appear in early 2011 for both US and European release. It will be available in Europe from spring next year and shows some new design features, especially on the interior, that should appear on the coupé version as well. The gallery is more than enough to convince us that it’s a lovely car and it’s done in typical BMW style - with all the elegance and luxury you can stuff into 117 shots. Check it out below.
The lovely new BMW 6 Series Cabriolet has had an early release, ahead of its 6 series hardtop counterpart, and will officially debut at the 2011 Detroit auto show. It will probably reappear again at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show ready for its European launch in spring. It’s a larger model than the previous one, longer by 7.4 cm (now measuring nearly 4.9 metres in length) and with a longer wheelbase as well, although BMW engineers promise greater rigidity than the previous model.
BMW has worked hard on this model, providing some elegant, modern styling, with more interior room, improved console and better technology. The new cabriolet roof uses a multi-layer fabric and BMW says the automatic mechanism opens in 19 seconds and closes in 24. It’s covered by plastic to continue the smooth-look exterior and the rear window can be opened independently of the roof.
The BMW 6 Series Cabriolet will be first offered with a 3.0-litre straight six turbocharged engine on the 640i entry level model. It has 320 hp and 450 Nm of torque. The top-of-the-range unit on offer from launch date will be the 4.4-litre V8 equipping the 650i (the model in these images). It has 407 hp and an impressive 600 Nm of torque, going from 0-100 in just five seconds.
