Bmw 5-Series F10 V-MS by Vorsteiner

American aftermarket company Vorsteiner presents a tuning program called VMS specifically designed and manufactured for Bmw 5-series F10. The package includes a lightweight carbon fiber aerodynamic package developed for vehicles already equipped with the factory M Tech aero package and consists of an add-on front spoiler, rear diffuser and a rear spoiler. To further complement the new sporty character of Bmw’s sports sedan, the tuner has also developed a finely tuned quad sports exhaust system (which Vorsteiner claims to provide the model with a “Formula 1 car tone”) and offers 20″ and 21″ forged wheels options. Aesthetically, the resulting car is not dramatically different from the standard model, but it surely gains points in terms of aggressiveness and sporty attitude. Click on the ‘Continue reading’ link below to see an official video presentation of the tuning issued by Vorsteiner itself.

BMW 5-Series F10 body-kit by Prior Design

BMW 5-Series F10 body-kit by Prior Design

German tuner Prior Design has just come up with a body kit for Bmw 5-series F10, releasing a first bunch of pictures of the new package on its official website. The kit is quite basic and consists of an add-on front spoiler, side skirts and rear add-on spoiler with integrated diffuser that fit all Bmw 5-Series F10 standard models with the exception of the M5 and those models with the original M-Sport Package installed. These are the components that are officially enlisted as part of the bodykit according to Prior Design, but on these pictures we also see a little carbon fiber roof spoiler and a different exhaust system with two pairs of mufflers that would have us believe that Prior Design is also working on a more ‘consistent’ tuning program for the model. We just haveto wait and see.

Audi, BMW and Nissan finalists in 2011 World Car of the Year Award

By Alison

Nissan Leaf

The Audi A8, new BMW 5 Series and electric Nissan Leaf will be the final three finalists in the 2011 World Car of the Year awards. The final verdict will be given on April 21st during the New York Auto Show, and will be the result of the evaluations of 66 judges. The vehicles involved have to have been on sale in at least two continents between January 1st and May 31 to be considered for the prize.

The Nissan Leaf gets two nominations because it’s also competing in the World Green Car of the Year category alongside the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Edition and the Chevrolet Volt. The World Performance Car of the Year finalists are the Ferrari 458 Italia, the Mercedes SLS AMG and the Porsche 911 Turbo. Frankly, it’s quite a predictable line-up and the only thing that will make it interesting is if the Leaf gets to win in the overall category as well, marking a moment when electric cars finally turn the corner and compete with their fuel-powered counterparts.

Astra, A1 and 5 Series success: Dacia Duster is our financial crisis winner

By Alison

A1, Astra, 5 Series vs Dacia Duster

You may well wonder, as we are, exactly what happened to the supposed financial crisis on the basis of what seem to be quite a healthy European car market. We reported that 2010 first quarter car sales in Europe were down, with a particular mini-crash in the German market of 31.7 percent. How to explain, then, the supposed successes that car manufacturers are reporting so far this year? Particularly the German brands…?

According to reports, the new Opel Astra sales are looking very healthy, with 150,000 orders already placed for the vehicle. That goes a long way to fulfilling Opel’s planned 180,000 sales for 2010 and believe me, if you thought Opel would never be sexy, think again - the new Astra looks much better in the flesh than it does on paper. The Opel Astra now occupies a whopping 38 percent of German market share and an increase in sales of 81 percent since the same period last year has been seen, although this is not so suprising for a new model.

Moving on to another German brand, the new BMW 5 Series has exceeded expectations despite only being released in March this year. No exact figures are out, but the model looks like it could be just what BMW needed to keep its top spot as premium auto manufacturer, although if it looks over its shoulder, it will find Audi hot on its heels.

New BMW 5 Series Touring not for US

By Alison

BMW 5 Series touring pics

The new BMW 5 Series Touring model will not be going stateside from Europe according to Jim O’Donnell of BMW America. The 5 Series model that will appear, however, will be the 5 Series GT with more space than the sedan version, and for customers who don’t want to opt for the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models.

The current BMW 3 Series Touring will continue to be sold until the sedan is replaced by the new F30 generation, when a BMW 3 Series GT will take its place. The new BMW 5 Series sedan will debut on the US market in May this year, appearing alongside the current 5 Series Gran Turismo crossover already on sale. BMW joins Volvo in abandoning sales of station wagons in favour of SUV and crossover models.

BMW 5 Series Touring videos

By Alison

Here is a series of videos of the new BMW 5 Series Touring, including driving footage, close-up engine and exterior shots, and a tour of the interior where you can see the 5 Series Touring luxury finishes. The step-up in quality is evident, and the design has moved perceptibly closer to the BMW 7 series style. The engine seen in the video is the turbodiesel unit with 184 hp, a sign that BMW really believes in this version and its appeal in the Touring model. See all the videos after the jump.

BMW 5 Series touring new pics

This new gallery of the BMW 5 Series Touring gives us a closer look at what is indeed a sporty and elegant style. While the video after the jump includes the usual marketing spiel, it certainly shows off some of the aspects of the new 5 Series Touring like the redesigned interior with more boot space and different seating set-up. This is probably about as sexy as a station wagon will ever get, but it certainly wins on the luxury comfort factor. See more in the gallery and video below.

BMW 5 Series Touring official pics

BMW 5 Series touring pics

The new BMW 5 Series Touring will be presented in April as the company keeps a couple of tricks up its sleeve for the post-2010 Geneva Motor Show scene. The 5 Series Touring will be available from September this year with the same engine line-up as the sedan: that includes the 523i fuel version with 204 hp, and the 3.0-litre turbo 535i with 306 hp.

The diesel versions are the 2.0-litre 520d with 184 hp as the entry level model, and the 3.0-litre 530d with 245 hp as the top-of-the-range model. The entry level petrol model consumes 5.2 litres per 100 km. Other modifications to the BMW 5 Series Touring include a larger boot space of 560 to 1,670 litres, which is 60 litres more than the current version. The rear seats can be moved forward for an extra 30 litres, which is more than enough family touring fun. Anyone for ‘I spy’…?

BMW live pics from Geneva and Efficient Dynamics physics lesson video

By Alison

BMW 5 Series live pics from Geneva motor show

At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show BMW presented the new 5 Series, the 5 Series ActiveHybrid concept, and the ActiveE electric concept based on the 1 Series coupe. The BMW catch cry for this year is “Efficient Dynamics“, a project which was first launched at Geneva three years ago. For a better idea of why BMW is so focussed on what may seem a boring concept, check out the BMW physics lesson video after the jump, which takes a jab at Audi via an upstart youngster who knows how to draw the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car.

BMW is more than serious, though, about the technology from that concept car that it intends to adopt across the range. The entire range of BMW vehicles has a calculated average of fuel consumption for each vehicle of just 5.9 l/100 km. The ActiveE will soon start road tests, while the Megacity concept development will get underway.

In addition to the environmental focus, on display at the show is the X5 restyling, the 3 Series coupe and cabriolet restyling, the 2010 X6 range and the Z4 SDrive 35is. There was also the 135i with Valvetronic Twinpower Turbo N55 with dual-clutch technology, which is a technical novelty for the BMW M5 now available with Start-Stop, a Competition Package and rear LED lights. We’ll be bringing you more details and pics of the new BMW 5 Series, X5 and the other models from the show, but see these live pics from Geneva to see if BMW is staying exciting while focussing on its technology.

New BMW 5-series GT to go cheaper

By Alison

BMW Serie 5 GT - Gallery Ufficiale

The BMW 5-Series GT is new to the market, but new versions could be on the way to make it a more affordable option. Autocar reports that a new twin-turbo diesel unit could be included in the range, once it’s established. A four-cylinder diesel is also being considered, which could be the 320d unit at 175 hp, making both these options entry-level models for the range.

The plan seems to be to drop the price tag of the 5-Series GT, which currently stands at about 40,000 pounds in the UK, to make it more accessible. According to reports, a possible M5 GT has now been discarded, with the top-of-the-range model being the 550i version, equipped with a 4.4i twin turbo at 407 hp.
