BMW presents four new models at Frankfurt

By Alison

BMW M5 Concept Shanghai

According to reports from Germany from AMUS, BMW could present as many as four models at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, two of which will be Motorsport models. The BMW M5 with its new 4.4-litre twinturbo V8 should be revealed, as should the BMW M3 GTS sedan, meaning that production for Europe at least would effectively be confirmed. The latter should have the same set-up as the GTS Coupé with the V8 engine and about 450 hp, but with updates to suspension and brakes.

Then, we should see the second generation BMW 1 Series appear, with a restyled 1 Series that gives us a longer wheelbase and redesigned interior. And then we should get to see the first glimpse of the new “sub-brand” - the BMW i3. It could be a welcome addition on the electric car market, and the city car could have about 150 hp with a range of 257 km.

BMW 1 Series M Coupe new pics

The new BMW 1 Series M is among the most talked-of sports cars out there at the moment and BMW has no problems showing it off in this new 1M gallery, in all its orange glory. The 1 Series M Coupé has been designed to embody the original M Sport ideal, heir to the BMW E30 M3, and can even put the current M3 in some difficulty in that regard. We wouldn’t mind seeing it in a different colour by now, but are happy enough to check out these new 1 Series M pics on a Saturday afternoon.

BMW 1 Series F20 teaser

By Alison

BMW 1 Series F20 teaser

The new BMW 1 Series project named F20 has been teased for the very first time in an image which gives us basically nothing - a blue tarp and a red tarp. The image comes from the site www.2originals.com, developed to publicise the debut which should occur in the next couple of months. A series of videos should emerge as the 1 Series teaser campaign continues.

The campaign has the slogan of “one origin, two originals” and BMW went on a mission to find sets of two siblings for the campaign. We gather that the theme could indicate the same car but with two very different packages. The BMW 1 Series is set to debut first as a five-door model, and a full 12 months should pass before we see other variants.

The slogan doesn’t have to refer just to the different segments, though, and we’ll be keen to see what BMW has up its marketing sleeve. We wonder if we won’t see a sports model and a more luxury version, although that does sound predictable to our ears. The 2Originals video auditions for the new 1 Series is after the jump, along with one of the sibling couples featured.

BMW live at 2011 Detroit auto show

BMW live at 2011 Detroit auto show

BMW certainly gave us a treat at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, bringing along its sexy burnt orange 1 Series M coupé, together with the 1 Series coupé and cabriolet restyling and the sleek new BMW 6 Series cabriolet. The model on show is the 650i convertible with its direct-injected 4.4-litre V8 which produces 400 hp. It will go on sale in the US in spring and will cost a pretty penny at nearly 92,000 USD. It’s a good looking model but it would want to be at that price. Still, BMW will be gunning for luxury convertible buyers for summer and you couldn’t get much better looking than this. See the models in our live pics below.

BMW 1 Series coupe and cabriolet video

By Alison

Here’s a look at the restyled BMW 1 Series coupe and cabriolet video. Half an hour of video probably wasn’t needed to show us the minimal changes that have taken place on the 1 Series before it gets an overhaul in the next generation, but in the video we see both static shots and driving scenes where we get a closer look at the facelift that has taken place. The BMW 1 Series gets a redesigned front with new bumpers and lights, including LED technology also carried through to the rear lights. Apart from replacing the 135i twin-turbo three-litre powertrain with a twin-scroll turbocharged unit, the engine range remains the same.

BMW 1 Series restyling for coupé and cabriolet

By Alison

BMW 1 Series restyling coupe cabriolet

After the new BMW 1 Series M was released, here we see pics of the slight restyling on the range. Both the 1 Series coupé and cabriolet get some updates before what is slated to be a significant overhaul of this range in 2013, especially on the hatchback model. The touch-ups are what you’d expect on a minimal facelift with a new front bumper, LED lights and a new set of wheels. The interior also includes new upholstery and trim options.

Engine options remain the same apart from the 135i’s twin-turbo three-litre unit which will be replaced by a twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-litre N55 powerplant. It gets a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission available as an option. The front bumper introduces what BMW calls an ‘air curtain’, designed to improve aerodynamics and therefore also fuel emissions.

The two facelifted 1 Series models will go on show at the 2011 Detroit auto show, but the new 1M will probably steal the show and be the model we’re all looking at before the new range turns up. The biggest news on the future generation 1 Series will be a possible front-wheel drive platform and a six-strong model range.

Mini going bigger or smaller? New BMW 1 Series and Mini citycar concept

By Alison

Mini Countryman official pics

Far be it from us to suggest there is some confusion over at the BMW group over the Mini brand, but reports are that a new Mini citycar concept will be revealed at the Detroit auto show as Mini goes back to its small car roots. According to Automotive News, Mini is working on a model that will become the BMW group’s smallest vehicle, with brand head Wolfgang Armbrecht saying that “the next spectacular idea from the Mini brand” will be presented in coming months.

He says: “We have always been motivated by the idea to build a small spacious car,” which makes perfect sense in terms of the Mini brand. Autocar has interpreted this as Mini creating a concept similar in size to the original Mini, which would compete with models such as the Toyota iQ. While the Mini Countryman was looking like a success, taking Mini into a new and larger niche, according to some reports, internally there is concern that the Mini brand will lose its uniqueness by going big.

A new Mini small citycar probably makes a lot of sense, although a premium price tag may have to be reconsidered if it is to be a success. But these kinds of urban models are increasingly popular in Europe and while a Mini is already quite small, it’s not really a citycar scale. There is no real comment either, as to how this new Mini concept might fit with the BMW Megacity project and that new brand under development.

BMW 1 Series M Coupe

The BMW 1 Series M coupé has finally been revealed before it has its official debut at next year’s Detroit Auto Show in January. In what is intended to be an entry-level BMW M model, the 1 Series M has impressive performance stats and should prove to be every bit as worthy of the ‘M’ badge for fans as the BMW M3 model.

Using the N54 six-cylinder, three-litre engine, the M1 model has 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque. Acceleration to 100 km/hr is measured in 4.9 seconds, and top speed is limited to 250 km/hr. It will go on sale in Europe at a price of about 55,000 euros, making that cheaper than an M3 and confirming its entry-level status.

The engine is the same as that used on the Z4 sDrive35iS and will have a six-speed manual gearbox in true sports style. An overboost function has been included for more torque across a short period of time and there’s the M division differential, too. An aerodynamic kit includes a few new features with a lowered body by 20mm, wider front end, large air intake at the front and things called ‘air curtains’ which channel airflow around the front wheels to reduce drag.

BMW 1 Series M videos

By Alison

If you’re already a Bimmer fan you won’t need convincing that the new BMW 1 Series M is going to be a hot model. This video may be a little too PR happy for some, but it gives us a look at the upcoming model and shows, just after yesterday, a significant competitor to the Audi RS3. For many the BMW 1 Series M may be a uselessly tuned coupé model for track fun but not daily driving, but it’s difficult not to acknowledge its impressive engineering and performance.

The new BMW 1 Series M is a classic M model which is good news for fans. According to reports, the new 1 Series M looks like it will tick nearly all the boxes of the beloved features of M Sport models. It will probably be presented in January 2011, most likely at the Detroit Auto Show and should prove to be a return to the M cars of old. For more details on how this drives, check out the EVO 1 Series M test drive video below.

BMW 1 Series M Coupé more details released

By Alison

BMW 1 Series M teaser pics

The new BMW 1 Series M Coupé will be officially presented at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in January, but BMW is slowly releasing some information regarding its hot little coupé to whet our appetite. The compact 1 Series M should get back to its roots after some BMW purists may be skeptical about the current BMW M3.

The new model will be equipped with a 3.0-litre, in-line six, twin turbo engine with 340 hp and strictly a six-speed manual gearbox. No torque features have been released but BMW expects this little number to weigh in at about 1,500 kg and pricing should sit between the M3 and the 135i Coupé.

It looks like BMW is aiming for a real enthusiast’s car despite doing silly stuff like releasing this ‘teaser’ shots which we don’t really understand the point of. For the rest of the official details, and we imagine some proper pics, we’ll have to wait until mid-December.

BMW 1 Series M Coupé teaser videos

By Alison

This teaser video of the BMW 1 Series Coupé gives us another glimpse of the pocket rocket that BMW will officially present at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. We get the feeling it will be a busy event! The new 1 Series Coupé is inspired by previous ‘M’ models from BMW, although it is designed to be an accessible model for the company, and addition to that we expect it to be a sexy little number too. The first teaser video of the coupé on the Ascari circuit is after the jump.

New BMW 1 Series to go to US?

By Alison

BMW 1 Series image

According to reports the new BMW 1 Series will be officially presented at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. With the 2010 IAA yet to commence, we’ll have to wait a whole year before seeing the new F20 (factory name) 1 Series, to be developed on the rear-wheel-drive platform of the L7 (which will also be used for the 3 Series F30). The new 1 Series will be slightly larger than the current model, with a longer wheelbase and more interior room and should replace the current three and five door versions.

The car should share many features of the new BMW 5 Series and 6 Series and could even go on sale in the US. The three and five-door versions should debut in North America along with the Coupé and Cabrio. The new 1 Series range should also have a Limousine four-door sedan version, and a Gran Turismo model will probably be replaced in favour of a Touring model instead.

The reports from Spain also indicate that we could get a new engine range with turbo-charged three and four cylinder units. The new generation would be available with a three-cylinder 1.2i Turbo available in 75 or 184 hp, while a 1.5d Turbo diesel option would appear in either 95 or 177 hp versions. A top-of-the-range would possibly be a four-cylinder 2.0i turbo with 204 or 238 hp.
