Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro video

By Alison

The Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro on show at the 2011 Worthersee event has got itself a coup and is to appear in the Need for Speed World video game. In this A1 Clubsport video we get a look at how the model was built for the tuning event. It’s a little monster of a vehicle, containing the 2.5-litre, five-cylinder, engine from the RS3 and TT RS, and getting 503 hp in the process. No production run of this model is likely to happen, so we’ll have to content ourselves with the possible 200 hp of the Audi S1 when it’s released.

503-hp Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro

By Alison

Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro

That’s a lot of horse power under the bonnet of the A1, but this particular little compact seems like the perfect German car to be taken to the 2011 Worthersee Tour. The Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro is a concept model that previews a future sports version of the A1, which could be the upcoming S1.

While the S1 is unlikely to get this same five-cylinder, 2.5-litre turbo engine from the RS3, Audi knows that its citycar Mini rival needs a little love and attention right now. And 503 hp and 660 Nm of torque should do it. Given the slight 1,300 kg of the A1, with this power and torque, it can now get to 100 km/hr in 3.7 seconds. It has all-wheel drive, a 250 km/hr top speed, carbonceramic brakes and 19-inch wheels with 255/30 tyres front and back.

The style is perfect for a tuning event with Glacier White exterior, carbonfibre reinforced plastic roof, new carbonfibre front air intakes, and a wider stance with new bumpers inspired by the original Audi Quattro. The mirrors are those of the Audi R8, and at the rear we get a spoiler and extractor. Could it be the harbinger of good news for a sporty A1? We hope so, and Audi probably does, too.

After Audi S1 hotter RS1 in the works?

By Alison

Audi A1 new pics

When the Audi A1 first came out, I was prepared to think it was a cool little Mini fighter on the European car market that could really work for Audi. That was until they slapped in a 1.2-litre engine at launch date and it was all over for me there. Either that, or Europeans are still loyal to what is often considered the original Audi compact - the A3 - because A1 sales have so far been a little disappointing.

According to Car and Driver though, the Audi S1 will fix things in the performance department, as they interpret the A1 with its current horsepower as a more expensive version of other VW group models. In fact, their very words are: “It’s the most expensive and the only premium iteration of a platform that is shared with mundane vehicles like the Škoda Fabia, the SEAT Ibiza, and the ubiquitous VW Polo.”

We’re not sure that’s the reason for the weak A1 sales and we don’t really know where to start in proffering a hypothesis as with Mini sales still raging in Europe, you’d think there would be room for a premium compact in the hearts of Audi fans and non. Car and Driver points out that the quickest Audi A1 is still only 5 hp more powerful than a Fabia RS, Ibiza Cupra and Polo GTI so perhaps that is the reason.

The Audi S1 should reportedly get the Volkswagen GTI 2.0-litre TFSI engine and about 225 hp. It could prove to be the real Mini fighter (we’re talking JCW competition) with Quattro all-wheel drive and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. And apparently an even hotter RS1 could be on the cards for the future. So while Audi was counting on a stylish premium feel to get its A1 sold, it looks like sheer performance might come to the rescue instead. The only thing that might kill it off is price, but generally speaking Audi buyers aren’t too concerned about that.

Audi S1 to get 270 hp?

By Alison

Audi A1 Competition Kit

As the Audi S1 that we had hoped to see at the 2010 Paris Motor Show became the A1 1.4 TFSI, it has served only to increase speculation of when we will see the S1 appear. And more to the point, just how much horse power it might have. AutoBild has revealed that according to them the S1 will have 220 hp and an all-wheel-drive system, but other, more elaborate news is coming from elsewhere.

Other reports from the Netherlands have the Audi S1 at anything up to 270 hp. This calculation comes from the knowledge that the 1.4-litre TFSI with no Audi Quattro technology is not quite what one would expect of an Audi ‘S’ model. In addition, the RS1 project uses a 2.0-litre TFSI with 270 hp, but the thinking is that it has been cancelled and the S1 will take its place. For the moment, we’re happy to check out the A1 1.4-litre model at Paris as we wait for more news.

Audi S1 to be front wheel drive, Audi A2 strictly electric

By Alison

New Audi A2 renderings

After news that no Volkswagen Polo R will be developed in order to favour the new Audi S1 and a Volkswagen Jetta R model, we also learn that the S1 will have front wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive in a move likely to anger purist Audi fans. While the Audi S1 will be equipped with a 1.4 TFSI engine and 180 hp, the front-wheel drive option should keep prices down; although we reported yesterday that we could be looking at starting prices of about 29,000 euros for the S1.

In the meantime, the new Audi A2 is planned to be an ‘electric only’ model when it’s launched in 2012. The company is preparing itself to compete against the new BMW Megacity model which will be available only the following year in 2013. The Audi A1 and A2 will share some components, including the steel monocoque structure which will replace the expensive spaceframe from the original A2.

We had originally thought that the BMW Megacity (still under development) would be a showdown with the A1, but it’s clear Audi is preparing the A2 as the true competitor from the drivetrain point of view. Depending on style, although the A2 is set to follow the previous model, it won’t be until the BMW Megacity emerges that we can really start to check out the competitors.

Audi S1 pricing: from 28,000 euros?

By Alison

Audi A1 new pics

Pricing of the new Audi S1, sports version of the A1, has been leaked by Audi itself on publishing the A1 price on the Spanish market. The Audi S1 is equipped with the 1.4-litre TFSI engine with 180 hp and 250 Nm of torque, which recently appeared on the Volkswagen Polo GTI and the Skoda Fabia RS. The S1 in Spain will cost 28,360 euros which includes the seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

It seems that Spain tends to have favourable car pricing, meaning the Audi S1 could cost signifcantly more on other European markets, starting from at least 29,000 euros. It will also be interesting to see what is left out of the standard pricing and what is requested in terms of options and additional accessories. While the S1 will be a veritable pocket rocket competing fully with models such as the Mini Cooper and the Fiat 500 Abarth, it’s starting to look a bit pricy.

Audi A8 video and S8 news

By Alison

Here’s the official video of the new Audi A8 sedan, including some road footage and beauty shots to get a closer look. The new A8 will debut first with the 4.2-litre TFSI V8 engine with 372 hp, followed by the TDI V8 with 350 hp. We also get a look at the new MMI multimedia system with touch pad function.

Talk is already occurring on when we will see the S8 sports version as well. Autocar reports that the S8 will set the design benchmark for the future performance models from Audi. The new design language will subsequently appear on the Audi S1, S6 and S7. This also confirms that we will see “S” versions of the Audi A7 and new A1 hatch, and they will hopefully include greater stylistic differences than the current S range provides over the standard models.

No Quattro for Audi A1: plans revealed

By Alison

Audi Metroproject Quattro Concept

Reports say the new Audi A1 will be made without the all wheel drive Quattro technology we’ve come to know as synonymous with the Audi brand. Front wheel drive will now be favoured on the A1, and the sportier S1 and RS1 will also have front wheel drive. The A1 Coupé should debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, ready for an August market debut in Europe.

The A1 will be Audi’s competitive offering at the smaller end of the premium market, with a plan to produce 90,000 vehicles a year. What’s more, Audi believes that between the A1 and the A3, there is rooom for an “environmental” A2 model, all of which is aimed at getting Audi back into smaller models.

The sporty Audi S1 model should appear later, possibly in February 2011, and an A1 cabrio model is planned for 2012. Will it be successful or will the market miss the AWD Quattro technology too much? It seems that Audi can still bet on removing the Quattro in favour of a lighter and less expensive car, but it will depend on whether that’s what the market wants from the popular brand. In the pics is the Audi Metroproject Quattro concept.

Audi A1 - first official sketches

By Luca

Audi A1

Car Magazine has obtained official design sketches of the new Audi A1, Mini-rival from Ingolstadt. They write that these sketches have been “smuggled out of Ingolstadt’s design HQ”.

The Audi A1 will join the B-premium segment (or supermini), a segment that has grown in appeal, with the success of the Mini (and, seemingly, of the Fiat 500). The A1 aims to be a classy hatchback, with Audi’s typical design style and all of the “vorsprung durch technik” rhetoric.

The A1, which should be just under 4 meters long, will be the first car built around VAG’s new MQB formula (”modular transverse matrix”). One can suppose that the MQB is the equivalent for small cars of the MLB platform that Audi has started using on the A5 (and will use for all models from the A4 upwards). The next A3 (coming in 2010) will also be based on the MQB formula, which should help lower the design and assembly costs, thanks to its modularity (according to Audi it will be 1.000 $ cheaper per unit compared to VAG’s current small-car platforms).
