Choosing three German supercars for this group challenge looks like it proved easy for the guys at MotoTrend. We have a face-off between the Mercedes SLS AMG, the Audi R8 V10 and the Porsche 911 Turbo. Apparently they are the vehicles best suited to venting a little stress built up in the office, and we’d have to agree just by watching the video. The scene set is the mountains of the California-Nevada border where you can get plenty of driving fun.

You can take your pick of your favourite engine noise, and then watch the video to see how it pans out. While the three cars are described as “three different answers to the same supercar question”, the Audi R8 V10 comes out as the favourite in this group test. See which you like best.

The Audi R8 V10 Spyder is slated as the biggest competition yet for the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabrio, which previously had the market virtually all to itself. The guys from Fifth Gear decided to put the two to a challenge to see which one races best. There’s clearly not much in it, in terms of performance specs and both have their own distinct style and status among car lovers. It’s your typical, slightly bizarre English test where the two guys spend half the time yelling at each other at high speeds with the roof down. But it looks like fun…. Here’s another video of the Audi R8 V10 Spyder, which first debuted at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The R8 V10 Spyder is equipped with a 5.2-litre engine, with 525 hp and 530 Nm of torque. This video (certainly more exciting than the first one we saw), shows the R8 Spyder in white, a colour we like more than the bronze originally presented, and has some great editing for some exciting driving.

This video of the Audi R8 V10 vs the Nissan GTR is more than just a drag race between two supercars by a couple of guys who wanted to play. It shows that the hype of bigger and larger engines doesn’t necessarily pay off in terms of performance. And that sometimes, the Japanese will build a better car, for half the price. Still, with the Audi a very sexy car, and if you had the pay packet to match, we figure you’d probably be choosing this one.

Audi driver Allan McNish presents the Audi R8 V10, saying “it’s the best car Audi’s ever built” (then reflecting on that and saying that the best car Audi has ever built is, in fact, his R15 TDI but we’re unlikely ever to get the chance to drive one). Here, we get a close-up look and not only the perspective from a 24-hour Le Mans champion, but a person who understands what is involved in the daily driving of a sports car.

The R8 V10 has a 5.2-litre engine with 525 hp, which reaches 100 km/hr in just four seconds. But if you want to “toodle off down to the shops”, the Audi R8 V10 will do that for you, too. The video smells of too much PR (when does McNish actually show us how it drives) but as this is about as close as I’ll ever get to an R8 V10, I’ll still watch.

The Audi R8 V10 Spider debuts in these pics from the Frankfurt Motor Show, with some impressive performance figures being presented. The engine is a 5.2-litre V10 with 525 hp and 530 Nm of torque. That’s a lot of wind in your hair from the spider.

The R8 Spider V10 has 0-100 acceleration of 4.1 seconds and, 0-200 km/hr is reached in 12.7 seconds. The top speed is about 313 km/hr. The side-blades have disappeared, as testified by the R8 Spider spy shots, and new carbon fibre body parts have been included.

The soft-top roof and its mechanism weighs only 30 kg, but the overall weight still tops 1,720 kg. The weight-power ration is still respectable though, with 3.3kg per horse power. The R8 spider comes with both manual and R-Tronic sequential automatic.

The roof mechanism takes 19 seconds to open and can function while the car is moving, up to 50 km/hr. The R8 Spider will be available in the first quarter of 2010 and on the German market, will cost about 156,400 euros. Check out the pics below from the Frankfurt debut.

In one mega group-test Evo sees which is the best road-racer model out of the Porsche 911 GT3, the Aston Martin V12 Vantage, the Audi R8 V10 and the Corvette ZR1. While describing this test as determining the most “hard-core” model, the introduction doesn’t really specify the criteria.

In fact, after a look at the engine specs and details, the Corvette is pegged as one of the more interesting models due to its very fast engine. But if you were to explain from the beginning that by “road-racing” you mean vehicles that can go fast elegantly, corner well, and give an overall fast but assured driving experience, you’d probably understand that the ZR1 is not quite in the league of the others (although some accusations of bias were levelled at Evo in the comments).

It may seem a little odd to have a guy sitting in an Audi R8 V10 saying “I’m a normal guy and this car’s aimed at me.” It could be wishful thinking or it could be that Audi has done a very, very good job.

While the car is meant to be fast, it’s not meant to be intimidating and the all wheel drive Quattro system gives the driver the kind of handling made to feel like you’re in control. Fifth Gear says that the interior “feels expensive” despite having stolen some bits and pieces from other, less costly, models.

And in the end, you get a Lamborghini engine for about 40,000 pounds less than buying a Gallardo. For an everyday supercar, it’s a supreme effort.

At Audi’s Geneva stand there was plenty to look, with cars small and large, white and red. But the absolute queen of the stand was the RS, with Audi triumphing as the ultimate in sports vehicles.

Audi sports style should have the visitors agog with the R8 V10, S3, the RS6 and its 580hp and the various dynamic SUVs on display.
