Audi Urban Concept also in spider version

Audi Urban Concept renderings

The Audi Urban Concept will be revealed at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show and while we’re not sure what to make of it yet, it could prove quite the curiosity at the show. The 1+1 model combines a sporty “fun car” with a practical usage and will be Audi’s design concept for future electric urban mobility.

The lightweight Urban Concept uses carbonfibre reinforced plastics and lightweight metals, and should also appear in a Spyder version. That makes for a mini Urban Concept range from Audi, although lopping the top off the coupĂ© won’t change the mechanics - both Urban Concept models are equipped with lithium-ion battery-powered electric motors.

So far it looks like Audi is kitting out its concepts with some neat technology including sophisticated suspension, LED lights and 21-inch wheels. More information should come from the Frankfurt show hall and we’ll be interested to see where Audi takes this concept in the future.

Audi A3 E-Tron Concept

Audi A3 e-tron Concept

One of Europe’s favourite hatchbacks has completely evolved in recent months, with the Audi A3 becoming an A3 sedan concept and now joining the Audi e-Tron family with a hybrid powertrain concept. The A3 e-Tron Concept fits out the new sedan and not the hatchback with a 1.4 TFSI engine with 211 hp and an electric motor which provides another 27 hp.

The eletric motor on the A3 is powered by 12 kW lithium ion batteries placed behind the rear seats. Electric range is 54 km and the A3 e-Tron comes with a seven-speed, dual clutch gearbox and launch control. The sprint to 100 km/hr takes 6.8 seconds and top speed is 231 km/hr.

The chassis is based on the RS3 Sportback and includes MacPherson suspension and 20-inch wheels. Made from plenty of CFRP, including the single frame, front splitter and rear extractor, the Audi A3 e-Tron concept still weighs in at 1,720 kg due to the battery pack. There are no details available as to whether this is an all-wheel drive model or not, and Audi hasn’t released any production plans yet but it could appear sometime in 2013 after a 2012 A3 sedan debut.

Audi e-Tron videos and production news

Audi A1 e-tron

Audi is using the e-Tron badge for different electric vehicles in its range and will bring its Audi R8 e-Tron to market before the A1 e-Tron. We’ve already seen the former model with its four electric motors on each wheel producing some impressive performance numbers, and production plans are for it to get to market in late 2012. As an electric supercar it will compete with others like the Mercedes SLS AMG E-cell and its technical stats should be nothing short of revolutionary: 308 hp and 1,600 kg.

Audi is also performing testing on its other e-Tron family member - the Audi A1 e-Tron. It might sound odd, but while the A1 e-Tron will never be as exclusive as the R8, we’re more excited by it. Why? Because Audi’s hot minicar in an electric version will be all the more accessible than the R8 and therefore a more useful innovation.

The A1 e-Tron is not strictly speaking an all-electric vehicle. It’s a range-extending one which includes both a tiny Wankel 250cc rotary engine with 20 hp, and an electric motor fed by 12 kW lithium ion batteries that produces between 61 and 102 hp. Torque is measured at 150 Nm in normal conditions, reaching 240 Nm in maximum performance. Videos after the jump.

The making of the Audi e-Tron Spyder

By Alison

Making of the Audi e-Tron Spyder

The Audi Quattro concept appeared alongside the Audi e-Tron Spyder at the 2010 Paris Motor in what made for a sexy stand from the company. In these pics and press release, Audi takes us through the ‘making of’ the e-Tron Spyder so we can see how the lovely model came about. It’s kind of like a sophisticated run-through the play-dough version of making a supercar.

We’ve already seen how the Audi Quattro concept could become Audi’s first boutique production model, made by Italdesign, and the e-Tron Spyder further shows the hand-built quality that Audi employed, doing things like individually manufacturing components and using carbon fibre for its malleability even when production is already advanced.

If you can stand the hyperbole of the press release after the jump, it’s interesting to see just how Audi put its e-Tron Spyder together and the kind of characteristics that make for a really great show car. Audi conducted an internal design competition to see who would ultimately get to make the car, and the results show that hopefully we can expect some more good stuff from the company in the future. Read all about it after the jump.

Audi e-Tron Spyder video

By Alison

This cool video shows the Audi e-Tron Spyder as both a stylish and technological vehicle. The video is done in a kind of psychedelic, video-game style with plenty of neon lighting and special effects. The e-Tron Spyder is Audi’s first hybrid plug-in and is the third member of the e-Tron family.

It is equipped with the brand new V6 TDI Twinturbo engine with 300 hp and 650 Nm of torque. In addition the car gets two electric motors of 87 hp and 352 Nm each, placed at the rear. Some of the e-Tron Spyder’s performance stats include a 4.4-second sprint to 100 km/hr and consumption of just 2.2 litres of diesel per 100 km. In pure electric mode, the e-Tron Spyder has a range of 50 km and a top speed of 60 km/hr.

Audi e-Tron Spyder live at 2010 Paris Motor Show

By Alison

Audi e-Tron Spyder live 2010 Paris show

The next member of the Audi e-Tron family has been presented live at the 2010 Paris Motor Show in the form of the Audi e-Tron Spyder. The open-top model is clearly based on Audi’s original coupĂ© version and provides an interesting hybrid model for the roadster/cabriolet segment. It is equipped with a V6 TDI engine with 650 Nm (no power figures were released) placed in the rear while a pair of electric motors with 87 hp and 352 Nm are up front.

That’s a lot of torque in the e-Tron Spyder and the hybrid system consumes just 2.2 litres of diesel for every 100 km with 59 g of CO2 emissions per kilometre. The e-Tron Spyder does a range of 1,000 km with a tank measuring only 50 litres. The rest of the Audi stand at the show features the new A1 Competition Kit and the R8 GT, along with the new A7 Sportback which we get to see in red.

New renderings: Audi R4 a go-ahead?

By Alison

Audi R4 rendering

Here are some Audi R4 renderings done in honour of rumours that the company has given the green light to the R4 model. The R4, should it be developed, would have a central engine and similar design cues to the original Audi e-Tron concept which emerged last year. The R4 would be four metres long and would adopt many elements of the Volkswagen Bluesport, including the engine range: a four-cylinder 2.0-litre TDI with 180 hp and a 2.0 TFSI with 300 hp.

The R4 would officially debut in 2012, but it’s not known whether it would appear alongside the Audi TT, or whether it would replace it. Audi also has to look at not stepping on the toes of Porsche models, particularly if it were to develop a spyder version in the future which could conflict with Porsche’s baby roadster. An e-Tron R4 electric version is almost certain to be developed, if Audi goes ahead with the R4 model in general.

Audi A1 E-Tron confirmed for Geneva show

By Alison

Audi A1 E-Tron

Yesterday the Audi A1 electric for the 2010 Geneva Motor Show was a possibility, we now know that the A1 E-Tron is definitely Audi’s “surprise” for the show. Appearing alongside the new compact A1, the A1 E-Tron is the third in the E-Tron family to be produced. It uses the same kind of range extending, generator technology we’ve been seeing lately (for example on the Opel Ampera), with the capacity to run on electric power, using a combustion engine as generator.

The Wankel fuel engine is a rotary motor which produces power for the electric motor, of about 102 hp. Overall, 105 Nm of torque are produced continuously with peak torque at 240 Nm. The electric motor is powered by a 12 kW lithium ion battery pack stored under the floor and weighing about 150 kg. The range of the A1 in all-electric mode is about 50 km.

Some high-tech features are included on the model, with the GPS navigator coming into play. Audi claims that on programming a destination into the navigator, the A1 E-Tron will automatically choose the most efficient way to generate the engine. The range extender can also be switched on manually.

Overall the car weighs 1,190 kg and can accelerate to 100 km/hr in 10.2 seconds. It has a top speed of 130 km/hr, all of which make this A1 electric strictly a city vehicle, although with a total range of 250 km, longer urban commuting could be achieved. What will be interesting to see in the future is which, if any, of this family of E-Trons will become a production model. If Audi is serious about electric cars, the A1 could be just the kind of premium compact city electric that could be successful. We’ll bring you live pics of the Audi A1 E-Tron from the Geneva show, and to read more about the car, have a look at the press release after the jump.

Audi A1 electric E-Tron to appear at Geneva?

By Alison

Audi A1 official pics

The new Audi A1 premium compact will be present at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, but a rumour has emerged that we could see an A1 electric model, too. In Audi’s press invitations for the show, we learn that the new A1 will be presented by Justin Timberlake, the RS5 will also be on show, and the A8 hybrid, and that a “surprise” is also in the works.

The idea for an A1 electric has come from an analysis of the recent presentations of the Audi E-Tron, when we first saw the E-Tron as an R8 electric version at last year’s Geneva show. The next E-Tron presented was a smaller model labelled as the fore-runner to the R4, while now bets are we could see a third E-Tron based on the A1 platform.

Whether this is a logical conclusion or not, you can decide, but with only a few days to go before the 2010 Geneva show kicks off, we won’t have long to wait to find out what this new Audi surprise is.

Audi R4 based on E-Tron from Detroit

By Alison

Audi R4 E-Tron from Detroit

The Audi R4 will be based on the Audi E-Tron presented at the NAIAS Detroi Auto Show, and will be the next couple sports model placed between the TT and the R8 in the Audi line-up. That’s not to indicate, though, that it will be like the original E-Tron seen at the Frankfurt motor show, as it will have quite a different body shape rather than being a modified version of the R8.

The Audi R4 will be equipped with both four and six cylinder TFSI engines combined with electric motors. The batteries located directly behind the cabin should guarantee better weight distribution than the original E-Tron, but will still remain faithful to the technical philosophy of four electric motors per wheel.

According to reports from the 2010 Detroit Auto Show, Audi could also extend the ‘E-Tron’ name to include a full range of electric vehicles, without differentiating among segments. This would follow the history of the ‘Quattro’ name in the 1980’s, and would create greater identity for this kid on the block.

Audi E-Tron test drive video

By Alison

The Audi E-Tron test drive by the Los Angeles Times is seen in this video, although it’s unlikely to tell you anything you didn’t already know. We don’t get an idea of what it feels like to actually drive the E-Tron, and the torque figures quoted are likely to be those of the wheels, and not the output shaft, which has created some controversy.

The driver of this test, Dan Neil, gives us some insight into what kind of car the E-Tron is like in his written article. He says:

Like all electric cars, the batteries are the biggest concern. The e-tron uses a lithium-ion pack sourced from Sanyo with a total capacity of 53 kWh, but only about 43 kWh is usable storage. Max discharge is a healthy 230 amps. According to Krauter, the car will have two settings for regenerative braking, one normal and one sporty — which is to say, you lift off the gas and the aggressive regen will instantly slow the car down as if it had piled into a load of sand. No coasting.
