Audi at the 2012 NAIAS in Detroit

By Adrian

Audi at the 2012 NAIAS

Audi showed up at the 2012 North American International Auto Show with a few interesting models. Arguably the most sought-after model of the lot is the Q3 Vail Concept, a show car that anticipates the ‘RS’ version of the popular Q3 SUV from the German carmaker. Under its bonnet pulses a 2.5-litre TFSI engine producing 314 hp and 400 Nm of peak torque, which provides the car with a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of 5.5 seconds with 262 km/h (163 mph).

Another interesting presence at the Audi stall in Detroit is the new generation of the Audi A6, the new sedan from the four-ring house, powered by a brand new 4.0-litre twin turbo TFSI V8 delivering 420 hp and 550 Nm of torque. It is the same unit used by the Audi S8 and the newly unveiled Bentley Continental GT V8 range, although with modified supercharger and electronics.

The third important model brought to Detroit by the Ingolstadt-based carmaker is the Audi A4 Allroad, which has just undergone its mid-life restyling. Check them all out in our photo gallery taken at the Audi stand in Detroit.

2012 Audi A6 recalled in the US because of airbag flaw

By Adrian

Audi A6

Volkswagen is about to issue a recall for 2012 Audi A6 because of a possible issue concerning the stitching of the airbags, which my prevent them from activating in case of a crash. American transportation authority NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has released a bulletin confirming that the recall concerns A6 models manufactured between April 8 and May 26, 2011.

Volkswagen should notify the recall to the 317 A6 owners affected by the problem in January, when they will be able to take their vehicles to any Audi dealer and get the problem fixed free of charge. At the moment, there are no reports of a similar inconvenience in Europe.

Audi A6 Avant tuning by ABT Sportline

Audi A6 Avant tuning by ABT Sportline

The Audi A6 Avant gets a sporty tuning from ABT Sportline. We’ve got to admit that we quite like the A6 wagon and this tuning effort only adds to its sporty feel, without going overboard. On the outside, the A6 Avant tuning features a new aerodynamic body kit with front and rear spoilers, side skirts and a new rear bumper. Wheels from 19 to 21 inches are available.

The Audi A6 Avant 3.0-litre TDI engine gets tuned to either 237 or 296 hp, which is up 35 and 54 hp respectively. The 3.0 TFSI gets a big 414 hp over the original 296 hp, which gives it an acceleration time to 100 km/hr of five seconds. Standing out on the model are the ABT signature four tailpipe exhaust outlets.

Audi A6 Hybrid

By Alison

Audi A6 Hybrid

Audi has released the technical details of its A6 Hybrid model which will debut on the market next year. The new hybrid sedan in the Audi line-up is equipped with the 2.0 TFSI engine with 211 hp and 350 Nm of torque, which uses FSI direct injection system and Audi’s valvelift system (AVS).

The hybrid side of things is based on a 72-cell lithium battery which weighs 36.7 kg and produces 40 kW of power (54 hp). The battery is housed in the boot, which still keeps a decent size ranging from 375 to 850 litres. Three programmable options are available with the hybrid system. EV mode is electric, D mode uses both for traditional hybrid motoring and the S option is for sports driving. Another two options are available to use with those three modes, utilising energy recuperation and an overboost function.

Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions depend on the mode being used. The EV electric program can be used for three kilometres and at speeds of up to 100 km/hr, no emissions are released. Average fuel consumption is 6.4 l/100 km and CO2 emissions are 146 g/km.

After all the technical stuff what we essentially get is a German hybrid years after the Japanese started building them, but which will provide customers who want Audis, or German premium brand cars, with a hybrid option. More of these will certainly start to take their place in the line-up, but we’ll wait for pricing information first to see how much more than the standard A6 it might turn out to be.

New Audi A6 Avant videos

By Alison

Here are more Audi A6 Avant videos in which we get driving footage, close-ups of the S-Line package and a good look at the interior. Audi doesn’t exactly make the most dynamic videos we’ve ever seen, so we’re putting this firmly in the executive family cruiser, but we know that the A6 Avant can be quite the sporty station wagon, too.

There’s no denying that in the “white ibis” exterior video after the jump, the A6 Avant has sexy lines and certainly all the luxury you could want. The estate is 4.93 metres long, 1.46 high and 1.87 wide with a wheelbase of 2.91 m. The rear boot space gets up to 565 litres.

From the second half of this year, six engine units will be available with two petrol models and four diesels. The entry level model is a 2.0 TDI with 177 hp, ranging to the 3.0-litre V6 TDI with 204 hp, 245 hp or the twinturbo 313 hp. The V6 direct injection petrol engines come in either the 2.4-litre aspirated unit with 204 hp, or the three-litre, 300-hp option.

Audi A6 Allroad renderings

By Alison

Audi A6 Allroad renderings

After the debut of the Audi A6 Avant, here is a tantalising rendering of a possible future Audi A6 Allroad model. The offroad station wagon could debut in about 12 months time, and while we don’t think this is one of the best renderings from Theophilus Chin, it does give us an idea of the sporty elegance might be prepared to get itself dirty.

The Audi A6 Allroad will likely have a higher wheel base, with some of the classic plastic and chrome protection of a soft offroader. Recently Audi’s Allroad models have achieved a small slice of the market all their own, and have provided an option for those who didn’t want a standard wagon, but weren’t interested in a SUV either.

While the crossover craze is currently storming that kind of customer, there are those who still affectionately hold on to the classic station wagon. If the A6 Allroad has dedicated suspension, it’s the kind of model that offers a dynamic but balanced ride. Here’s to receiving some official details soon, we hope.

Audi A6 Avant pics and details

Audi A6 Avant

There’s a lot of talk about how Audi needs a new design direction (which we’ve indulged in, too), but there’s no denying that the new Audi A6 Avant is a looker for a station wagon. Sleek and sporty, with a luxury touch - just what we like in our estate models. The A6 wagon will go up against the BMW 5 Series Touring and the Mercedes E-Class Estate models.

The Audi A6 Avant has got a new front look, a sloping roof and a well-proportioned, elegant rear end. Despite being larger than the previous model, the new A6 Avant is lighter as Audi starts to put its new lightweight materials into production.

Thanks to an aluminium chassis (of about 20 percent of the whole), the new model actually weighs about 70 kg less than the previous one. It’s 4.93 metres long and has a longer wheelbase of 2.91 metres. The rear boot space is 565 litres, reaching 1,680 with the rear seats down. The big news is on the engine front, with the debut of the 3.0-litre V6 TDI twinturbo with 313 hp. First appearing on the A6 sedan, it will soon be rolled out to other Audi models.

Audi A6 Avant presentation on May 18

By Alison

Audi_A6_Avant_rendering

The new Audi A6 Avant will be presented on Wednesday, 18th May at the Humboldt Box in Berlin. The updated A6 Avant will be bigger than the current model but should be lighter by about 80 kg, thanks to new development on the chassis. The estate variant of the A6 sedan will go on show at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The rendering is from December last year, by Theophilus Chin.

Audi A6 aluminium special effects video

By Alison

This car commercial focuses on the new Audi A6 chassis and its additional aluminium components. The new A6 has 20 percent aluminium than the previous model, and in using more of the lightweight material, weight has been decreased by about ten kilos. We sometimes wonder how important these things are to the final customer who actually buys the vehicle, but we like the special effects used in this video.

The Audi A6 is now available with two petrol engines: the V6 2.8 FSI and the V6 3.0 TFSI. The diesel range is extensive with the 2.0 TDI and the V6 3.0 TDI in two powersteps of 204 or 245 hp. The models comes with either front or all-wheel drive and with automatic or manual transmission. In the future we’ll see the new Audi A6 Hybrid and the A6 Avant expected by the end of this year.

Audi A6 new pics

By Alison

Audi A6

Here are new pics of the Audi A6 sedan model - it might not be the most exciting Audi in the range in terms of design, but this kind of steady and sensible offering is sure to sell well. It’s the fourth generation A6 to have been produced, and prices start at around 45,000 euros. The entry level model is a 2.8 FSI powered vehicle with Multitronic gearbox, traction control, ESP, 17-inch wheels and start&stop technology.

The first stage of the market launch sees the Audi A6 available with the 2.8 FSI with S-Tronic transmission, or the 3.0 TFSI with S-Tronic transmission. Other models include the 3.0 TDI diesel unit with 204 hp and Multitronic gearbox, and the 3.0 TDI unit with 245 hp and S-Tronic transmission. The Audi A6 hybrid model will also appear this year, with its 2.0 TFSI engine and electric motor combined.

New Audi A6 videos

By Alison

In these videos we get a closer look of the new Audi A6 and despite previously saying that it’s styling is far from exciting, it still really wins over with its elegance. This mid-size A6 is an impressive show of luxury and good quality, and the interior is probably the most appealing thing of all. The new A6 keeps its understated elegance while bring the car into a new era of superior internal feel. The one thing we can appreciate is that in an age of coupĂ© sedans looking sexy on the outside, Audi hasn’t underestimated the importance of the interior on its standard sedan; which is pretty clever given we spend more time sitting in a vehicle than walking around the outside admiring it.

The engine range is sufficient for launch and provides a number of alternatives to meet different needs, while apparently a swathe of future options are being planned for the future. The A6 hybrid will also turn up in the near future, providing a green alternative although fuel consumption isn’t likely to win customers over given the 6.2 l/100 km figure is actually higher than both the 2.0-litre TDI models. In the video above we get to see some driving footage, static shots inside and out and a nice view. After the jump, you’ll find a production video and another one dedicated to the A6 hybrid.

New Audi A6 official pics

The 2012 Audi A6 has been released before its official debut at the Detroit Auto Show, following in Europe most likely at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. It will then go on sale in Europe sometime in March-April. The new Audi A6 shows some styling features from the Audi A8, but mostly has a revamped chassis with aluminium and steel components, and an entirely new interior which looks stunning.

While ‘exciting’ is not what always comes to mind with Audi styling, particularly on a model lile this one, the new A6 has plenty to offer which could entice more customers away from its rivals. It has a generous standard package, a fabulous interior and now has a few other gems - like the lighter weight and some impressive luxury touches available. The new model has been specifically designed to gain greater sales in the US and Europe, where the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series are doing remarkably well. Audi’s foothold in China is partly due to this model and depending on what specs are made available for that market, the new A6 is probably just in time to further cash in on Audi’s success there.

The 2012 Audi A6 has been kept to its mid-size with dimensions extremely similar to the previous model. Audi has played the lightweight game well enough as savings on the overall body weight have almost cancelled out heavier additions such as the greater rigidity and some technological components which make this model 10 kg heavier than the previous one. We should see an overall improvement in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions as Audi fine tunes its engine range on the A6, and even adds a future hybrid A6 to the line-up. In Europe, five engine options will be released at launch date, mostly all with direct injection and turbocharged, as well as start&stop technology and energy regeneration on braking.
