The Volkswagen New Compact Coupe presented at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show shows a concept model that will most likely be positioned somewhere between the Scirocco and the Passat CC in the Volkswagen line-up. The series model will possibly be name the Jetta Coupe, and indicates a new design direction for some of the new Volkswagen models coming up.
The design comes from Walter de Silva, and you can see the influence of his beloved Audi A5. The New Compact Coupe, or NCC, is a hybrid vehicle with a 1.4 TSI engine with 150 hp, and an electric motor with an additional 27 hp. It has a top speed of 227 km/hr and can reach 100 km/hr in 8.1 seconds.
Clearly, the Volkswagen NCC has impressive fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures, using just 4.2 litres of fuel for every 100 km, and producing 98 g/km of CO2. It has a seven speed DSG gearbox and rear wheel drive. A possible New Compact Sedan will also be produced along the same design lines, to substitute the Jetta or even the Passat on the US market. The New Compact Sedan should be a five door, fastback model very similar to the Audi A5, and the NCC should appear in a production version by about 2012.

Hofele Design has taken the Audi A5, added some R8 looks and come up with this result. The A5 takes on carbon fibre sideblades (which don’t appear on the R8 Spider, but which Hofele wanted to include on the A5 cabrio all the same), rear aerodynamic look from the supercar coupe, side skirts, a lowered body and twin chrome exhaust with four outlets. It might not be your cup of tea, but if you’re wanting to touch up your Audi, this kit is available on the Audi A5 and S5 coupé, and the Audi A5 cabrio and S5 cabrio.

The Audi A5 Sportback has “flawed suspension”, “unpolished underpinnings” and is “a firm stride in the wrong direction” according to three different reviews from three different publications. This is quite a surprise, bordering on the shocking, for what was expected to be a high quality, classy and stylish offering from Audi.
The problem for the A5 Sportback seems to lie mostly in the suspension, and a little in the steering. Below we give you extracts from the reviews that highlight the problems encountered, but to give a little summary: apparently the steering is inaccurate, torque steer can occur with quick acceleration and the weight of the car suddenly kicks in halfway around a corner.
The biggest issue for the reviewers, though, is the suspension. Apparently extremely stiff, the suspension gives you the opportunity to feel every pot-hole, every unsealed surface and every bump in every road. Car says:

Audi has presented its A5 Sportback to the media, showing off a very nice gallery for the model that aims to be part coupé, part sedan and part station wagon. It is the third member of the A5 family after the coupé and cabriolet.
The Audi A5 Sportback will debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September, and will appear in Audi dealerships from that month, with sales already starting at 33,650 euros for the entry level version.
The A5 Sportback will be available with six different engine options, all turbo charged, ranging from 125 kW (170 hp) to 195 kW (265 hp) in power. The 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI with appear with start-stop system. Transmission options include manual, multitronic or seven-speed S tronic, and all-wheel drive quattro will be available on top-end models.
These spy shots of the Audi A5 Sportback make me wonder if the photographer wasn’t up a tree somewhere. The shots were taken during the pre-debut photo shoot, prior to its presentation at this year’s Frankfurt motor show. The coupè-sedan looks to be an elegant, well-proportioned car.
The A5 Sportback, given its style, has dimensions slightly different to those of the A4, but we’d only be able to judge from the inside of the vehicle. The base price for the 2.0 litre TDI at 170 hp is 38,380 euros.
Audi design head Wolfgang Egger describes the style of his latest creation, the Audi A5 Sportback, in this video. The sports sedan-coupè is ready for a successful campaign, with Egger outlining the roof line and rear spoiler of this car.
We also get some insight into the lateral design and a rear that’s sporty and elegant, with an idea of why Audi has taken to this style. Seeing it come to light on the page is really quite intriguing. See the video for more information.

This reconstruction of the Audi A5 Sportback is based on recent spy shots of the A5, giving us an idea of the three-quarter view of the rear. The A5 Sportback will be the first sedan-coupè from the company and the first in its segment. It will appear above the A4 in the product listing, though will share the same platform and mechanics.
The style will be characterised by a new cut around the side of the vehicle, included in this representation. S and RS versions should also appear at some stage, and the A5 Sportback debut is set for the Frankfurt show in September.

We know that a cabriolet is all about selling a lifestyle with a car, but we still enjoyed these new shots of the Audi A5 Cabrio, in a more atmospheric setting after the first official studio pics.
In these new shots we get a real sense of the elegant Audi open top and a glimpse at the interior. Audi is playing on warm sunshine settings with a luxurious touch.
After our previous post on the Audi S5 Cabriolet, we give you the second gallery of the A5 version. The new cabriolet has a soft roof, and will be available with six different engine options: the V6 turbodiesel at 2.7 and 3.0 litres (power at 190 and 240 hp respectively), the 1.8L TFSI at 160 hp, the two 2.0L TFSI (four cylinders, turbo compressed, direct injection petrol and power at 180 and 211 hp), and the 3.2L V6 FSI at 265hp.
That gives you plenty of engine options, and additional elements are the choice of a six-speed manual, or continual variation Multitronic, or the S tronic transmission with double clutch and seven speeds. As per Audi tradition, the more powerful models will be equipped with Quattro all wheel drive.
The Audi A5 Cabrio price will be 37,300 euros (1.8 TFSI) with delivery from the second quarter of 2009.

It’s certainly not the latest of news that the Audi A4 Cabriolet will disappear from the product lists of the company as it pursues the middle segment and should soon reveal the Audi A5 covertible, after its presentation as a coupè.
The debut should take place at the Paris show in three weeks’ time, while the arrival on the market is expected for next year. In addition to the fabric roof, only a very few mechanical differences will be seen compared to the coupè, as both models will take on the engine range of the S5 and RS5.

Coming from Audi in Poland is this “authoritative” document that shows the future engine plans of the manufacturer. Everything from petrol to diesel, from reduced power to transmission changes, you can check it out and make up your own mind. The offering will be varied and attractive, and there is also some news on models to be introduced.
Rear wheel drive should debut towards the end of next year, and in addition to the current 1.4 TFSI and we should also see a 1.2 TFSI 86 hp, recently seen on the Seat Ibiza revealed.

A new convertible A5 will be ready for the road come 2009. CEO Frank Dreves, speaking in the pages of “A.m.u.s”, gave details that the facilities at Neckarsulm will produce the new Audi cabriolet. There are no technical indiscretions either, regarding a possible hard-top roof (as seen in the latest generation BMW Series 3 cabrio, principle competitor); therefore it seems that the A5 for the moment will remain faithful to the fabric roof, to the advantage of weight and charm. More precise details are available for sales prospects though, at about 28,000 units each year.
This also thanks to a range of both petrol and diesel engines, diversified such as to satisfy every need, including the more sporty S and RS versions. Dreves also focused on how the company of four rings in 2008 is counting on a 6-10% growth and expansion in markets outside the EU. What remains less clear however is whether the A5 Cabrio will replace the current soft-top model of the A4, or whether the proposal (as confermed by the A5 Sportback compared to the A4 Avant) is a step-up in price, sporty style and prestige.
