Opel GTC Paris Concept video
We might have to change our mind over the Opel GTC Paris Concept being almost too aggressive and sporty for the kind of car it is after seeing this video. Although it’s so damn shiny that the highly polished effect makes it difficult to get a complete idea of the GTC lines. In any case, we’ll be bringing you some live, possibly finger-smudged pics of it from the 2010 Paris Motor Show where we’ll see just where Opel is taking its sporty Astra GTC in the future.

How sexy can an Opel get? The Opel GTC Paris Concept kind of sexy. In fact, the concept, which is a study in how sporty Opel can take its Astra model is almost too aggressive but then any production version is unlikely to be this over the top (so it’s one for hot hatch lovers). The Paris Concept is probably our first look at what the new Opel Astra GTC model will be like, which will build on the more sporty and slanted rear look of the new Astra anyway.
The GTC Paris Concept is equipped with a two-litre direct-injection engine which produces 295 hp. It also has a limited slip differential, FlexRide suspension and a rear parallel suspension set-up called Watt. On the more environmental and less sporty front we get Start&Stop technology which might be the only thing that makes it to production although Opel has made no further announcements about when the Opel Astra GTC will emerge. Lastly, the Paris Concept has a six-speed manual transmission.

The Opel GTC Paris Concept is a super-sleek sports concept based on the Astra which we will see presented at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. We’ll leave you to check out all the details of this angular and slanted concept in the gallery, but the concept model is the introduction to the new Astra GTC. The actual model itself will unlikely be this exaggerated, but if there’s one thing Opel’s got right, it’s how fast this model looks.
The sports hatchback is more like a kind of sedan with shooting brake finish, as it measures 4.46 metres long, so there’s not much compact in that. The current GTC model is 17cm less in length, and this prototype should prove to be quite heavy in consequence. The Opel GTC Paris Concept will be equipped with a four-cylinder, 2.0-litre turbocompressed engine with direct injection and Start&Stop system. We’ll definitely be checking this one out at the show.
New Opel Astra GTC or Calibra rendering
This rendering of the new Opel Astra GTC comes from the recent Calibra spy shots of a camouflaged version which will debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, ready for sales to start in the spring of 2011. So far there are those commentators who love it, and those who say the Astra GTC looks too much like the Renault Megane Coupé.
The rendering has a few add-ons which would eventually only appear on the GSi and OPC sports versions. The name of this car is still under discussion and we could see anything from the Astra GTC, Astra Sport Coupé or Astra Calibra emerge. Whatever the case, the Astra GTC should be developed as the coupé version of the Insignia, with a shooting brake design.
Engine options are likely to include the 1.7 CDTI with 130 hp and the 2.0 CDTI with 160 hp, while the 1.6 Turbo engine with 210 hp should appear on the new GSi version. The top of the range sports model will be the OPC version with a 2.0 Turbo unit and 240 hp.

Opel Astra GTC sport hatch drawing
While this draft rendering is probably a little exaggerated in how fat the car looks, the new Opel Astra GTC will be very similar to this official drawing. The Astra GTC is expected on the market in 2011, and design head Malcolm Ward has said that the evolution will be radical. In fact, expect a far more “outlandish” shape than the five-door model.
Ward says: “It will be a very dramatic execution and very, very close to the sketch. Think about the current three-door then think about where the new car will go.” The new Astra Sport Hatch will have some very smooth lines, and has spent more than 600 hours in the wind tunnel to improve its aerodynamics.
