Video: Aston Martin One-77

By Alison

Well! In this video we get taken from relaxing mediterranean sunlight scenes to the Aston Martin One-77 blasting around some hilly roads. While an absolutely gorgeous car that is virtually hand-built and made-to-order, it’s luxury isn’t just about Aston Martin beauty.

We get to hear plenty of the 7.3-litre engine and its 700 hp in the video, as well as see just how that spoiler might work if we were lucky to own this one-million euro piece of kit. That close-up of the spoiler shows us that while the One-77 is in classic Aston Martin style, there are plenty of new, small details that should appear on future Astons, starting with the next generation DB9.

Aston Martin One-77 a sell-out

By Alison

By the time we publish this the Aston Martin One-77 might well be a sell-out, given that 60 of the 77 vehicles planned for production have already been sold. That’s a lot of money in Aston coffers given just how expensive this car is, although the design and engineering investment as well as actual production indicates just what an exclusive model this is. With an Asian tour planned to sell off the rest, we have no doubt the Aston One-77 range will be a succes and that none will remain in the company’s garage.

Given its lovely British style and incredible performance (750 hp!), the tour through Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taipei and China could be a boost to the Aston image in Asia, particularly in a market with money to spend on supercars. The Aston Martin One-77 was first revealed at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and it went on to win at the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza in an outing that proved the market’s appetite for this model.

We’ll be very interested to see what the reaction to it is in Asia (we can only imagine positive) and if it will mark the beginning of the Aston Martin Cygnet on that continent, too, considering that customers can get a Toyota iQ jazzed up to fit their new Aston range.

Aston Martin Cygnet in the US

By Alison

Aston Martin Cygnet new pics

Always unimpressed by the Aston Martin Cygnet - a microcar based on the Toyota iQ - we think it’s very weird to learn that the Cygnet is being planned for the US market, too. While the Cygnet is only for customers who already have an Aston and so could therefore be argued to be an exclusive accessory to the real thing, it seems strange that the company would even bother to make it available on a market that already hates the Smart ForTwo.

While it’s not the fault of Americans that the Smart ForTwo has been a failure, and neither has it been just because it’s a minicar, the ForTwo has probably dampened US enthusiasm for anything under a hatch model. The rebadged iQ will get an all-electric version in 2013 and while the Cygnet could prove an alternative to the Smart, it is still just an iQ dressed up in fancy (and expensive) Aston Martin finishes.

Luckily though, the Cygnet won’t be the only thing coming from the company in the years to come. We should apparently get a redesigned Aston Martin Vantage in 2014, preceded by a new DB9 in 2013. Production of the limited edition, carbonfibre One-77 should start by year end and we shouldn’t see anything with the Lagonda name attached to it for a few years’ yet (and that’s after the Aston Martin SUV was killed off because…well no-one liked it really).

Aston Martin Gauntlet concept by Ugur Sahin

By Alison

Aston Martin Gauntlet concept

This Aston Martin Gauntlet concept has been designed by Ugur Sahin who has also developed his own works on Ferrari and Corvette. The Gauntlet concept car is based on the Aston Martin One-77 with a few touches that refer to past models from the company. The Dutch designer has also tried to include his own stamp on the project, with a few nerve lines running along the length of the car. Sahin has completed the Gauntlet purely as a design concept, although if it were ever to go into production, it could prove a successor to the Aston Martin Vanquish. And we just love the name!

Aston Martin One-77 Volante renderings

Aston Martin One-77 Volante renderings

These renderings of the Aston Martin One-77 Volante show a kind of mix between an Aston and what could have been the Audi R8 Spyder. Call us partial, but we think this take on the One-77 Volante is much classier than Audi ever could be and we like to think that Aston has taken it into consideration. We won’t go so far as to say that topless is better, but this Aston Martin One-77 open top is lovely with elegance and aggression all rolled into one.

Aston Martin Nurburgring store hosts One-77

By Alison

Aston Martin One-77

After the opening of Ferrari’s Nurburgring store, Aston Martin has followed suit, displaying this One-77 model at the store opening. According to World Car Fans, this was the first production model One-77 ever made, used for testing purposes.

The car is equipped with a 7.3 litre V12 engine at 700 hp, and it’s said to cover 100 km in less than 3.5 seconds, although Aston Martin hasn’t released further technical details. Using a carbon fibre monocoque chassis, it weighs 1,500 kg.

The One-77 supercar has a six speed sequential manual tool box and a fancy suspension kit called a Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve to keep the power under control. Here’s waiting for other manufacturers to pull out some special models at Nurburgring stores - we’re quite liking this little trend so far.

Aston Martin One-77: le foto ufficiali da Villa d'Este

After its appearance at the Concorso d’Eleganza, and winning the concept car of the show, here are the official pics of the Aston Martin One-77. The prize is an excellent result for Aston Marting and you can see why in these lovely pictures.

When originally presented at the Geneva show, the One-77 still had dark windows and the interior was unfinished. Now, however, we can see all the features of this model, including a hand-made interior on this 700 hp Aston.

Aston Martin One-77 wins at Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza

By Alison

Concorso di Eleganza Villa d'Este 2009

The 2009 edition of the Concorso d’Eleganza at the Villa d’Este was particularly followed, from the moment two debuts were announced: the Aston Martin One-77 and the Bugatti Veyron Centenaire Edition.

It was the first real outing for the Aston Martin One-77 after Geneva, and you can see the new model in all its glory in these pics, thanks to our reader Mbg. Historic models on display at the show were the Bertona Mantide, Fisker Karma S, Infiniti Essence, BMW Gina, Morgan Aeromax Supersports, and the first prototype of the new generation Mini from 1997, noted as the ACV30.

Also on show were an Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B from 1938, built in only six models, while the BMW Trophy Classic went to a Bentley 8 Litre Sportsman Coupé from 1931. The FIVA Trophy for the best preserved car went to an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GTC Castagna, while a Phantom I Sports Saloon won the title for the most elegant Rolls Royce.

Other prizes included a Girard-Perregaux award going to a rare Abarth 204 A Berlinetta Vignale from 1950, and the best restoration award went to a Ferrari 250 GT Europa. The Aston Martin One 77 triumphed as the best concept car, voted by the public.
