Mercedes is continuing its testing of the its next supercar, the SLS AMG, whose debut is expected at the Frankfurt motor show this year. It has been spotted around the Nurburgring during test runs.
Recently Mercedes has bucked car marketing trends and has released technical information about its new car well ahead of time, supported by official pics and videos that retrace the SLS AMG testing phases.
The SLS is the heir to the immortal 300 SL Flügeltürer from 1954 and the first car to be completely developed by AMG, after its development of its first ever engine: the 6.2 litre V8 M156. AMG has proved it’s worthy of its position as Mercedes’ exclusive sports tuning partner.
The SLS will be equipped with the above V8 engine, which will have dry carter technology and 571 hp. The top speed is 315 km/hr and weight is 1,620 kg. While the wait for the debut is still a few months away, the SLS contributes to the niche of expanding front engine, gran turismo supercars, that has a glorious past in its history.

More official information on the Mercedes SLS has been released, with a look at the interior of the AMG super coupè, and drawings on the exterior. AMG is bringing back the gull wing door opening on this SLS model which will substitute the Mercedes McLaren SLR.
The look of the interior and official drawings show the retro-tech style, in a kind of re-edition of the 300 SL Gullwing del 1955. The interior is simple and sporty, with aeronautical inspirations. A multimedia system dominates the centre dash and the steering wheel is new, with paddle transmission.
A central transmission allows the driver to choose between the various driving modes (Efficiency, Sport, Sport Plus and Manual), while there is a button ignition, rear spoiler adjustment, ESP control and AMG button for original user set-up.
The SLS should debut at the Frankfurt show in September, with sales starting in 2012 at a price of 135,000 euros. We’ll have to wait and see the effect of the 571 hp from the AMG V8 engine. The SLS will have a top speed of 314 km/hr, and an acceleration of 3.8 seconds to reach 100 km/hr.
The Mercedes E63 AMG has been confirmed in its 6.2 litre V8 “hand-made” at 525 hp and 630 Nm, with dynamism and versatility being the key to this project. The frightening performance, with 0-100 reached in 4.5 seconds, isn’t the only focus, though.
The first example of cutting edge technology comes with the Speedshift MCT transmission at seven-speeds with paddle shift and multidisc wet clutch, previously presented on the SL63. Other features include Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport Plus, and Manual modes, with AMG Drive Unit and throttle-blipping function.
Chassis and suspension technology has also been updated, with an all new electronics system called AMG Ride Control, though emissions and consumption themes still take over, even with this incredibly powerful vehicle. Fuel consumption is down by 12 percent at 12.6 litres per 100 km.

Here is a teaser of the Mercedes E-class 63 AMG before its New York auto show debut, revealing the front end of the E63. Designing and finetuning of the 6.2 litre V8 have been entrusted to Mika Häkkinen and Klaus Ludwig.
A complete update of the mechanics see a shift in power up to 525 hp, with some modifications to handling and chassis borrowed from the C63 AMG. Below a couple of spy shots before next month’s debut.

Such reminiscence, such poetic style” more than 50 years of SportLeicht haven’t changed the legendary Gullwing. Mercedes has decided to offere it again in 2010, exploiting the experience of Amg in creating a product worthy of replicating the success of the noble origins.
Car has obtained some technical data meaning we can better evaluate the proposition of this new coupé, offered last year in open air version, project code R197, with fabric roof. The SLC will be 4650mm long, 1950mm wide and only 1.25 metres tall with a wheel base of 2.7 metres. The numbers are similar to a Ferrari F430, though shorter by about 15 centimetres.
The weight distribution (48:52) will have transaxle advantage, with eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel differential. The close attention to overall mass means it will be lighter than an Slr.

Looking to reduce consumption and emissions without compromising sportiness - actually looking to increase it - is the new strategy for AMG to limit the environmental impact of its vehicles. The strategy will include the use of turbo and hybrid engines, technical solutions that can’t be left aside in reaching a balanced compromise between performance and savings.
The current V8 6.3 is counting its days: it will be replaced by another V8, 5.8 litre, turbo-compressed and able, in the quieter version, to perform at 570 hp (for 904 Nm of torque), or at 700 hp (1,200 Nm) in the version destined to replace the V12 6.0 twin-turbo.
In addition, the German workshop is reported to have collaborated with Mercedes in the design of a family of V8’s, all turbo, destined to flesh out the top end of the range: with 4.0, 4.6 and 5.5 litres, they’ll have power between 355 and 544 hp.
Speculation on the hybrid is not lacking either, with 2012 indicated as the debut year for the engines proposed by Amg. In the meantime, to kill time, the possibility of adopting an X-Trac Flybrid engine at 100hp is being evaluated.

Take the rear of the Viper and add to it a threatening front, and what do you get? An attractive coupé, potentially enchanting, with an immortal inheritance. An oxymoron? Definitely.
A few days from the appearance of the “cousin” Sl Black Series, Mercedes is showing it hasn’t abandoned the Slc project (or for the nostalgic the Gullwing), following some road tests with the unusual bodywork.

Some time ago we wrote about statements from AMG regarding the end of the war on power, with the explanation that future AMG cars with the CDI symbol would be manufactured with the environment in mind. It appears though that the possibility of explosive power is far too alluring to leave unexplored: and so AMG is proceeding in its development of the SL Black Series, perhaps the most powerful AMG ever.
According to reports of our favourite insider Auto Week, the new lethal weapon of the workshop will be powered with V12 6.0 already used on other 65 AMG: such an engine is capable of easily reaching 720 hp, even though the power would have to be regulated at 680 hp. The car has undergone a drastic “weight loss” (about 220 kg) using carbon fibre and more sporty components (brakes, fixed roof and an upgraded cooling system).
In addition, reports stated that the option of adding turbocharging technology combined with direct injection is being evaluated for the V8 6.3. “The increase in power,” as rumor-mongering had it, “would be limited though its presence would create ideal conditions for the adoption of direct injection.”

Imagine a car that could move in the city in complete silence, without producing emissions. Now imagine this car on an Autobahn, at the speed of race track. Volker Mornhinweg, CEO of Amg, with these words officially launched the brand’s new direction.
The spasmodic search for maximum power has been abandoned and from 2012 all the range’s models will adopt direct-injection and stop-start tenchnology to limit consumption and CO2 emission levels. But that’s not all as Mornhinweg has announced that the possibility of developing a diesel or a hybrid will have to be carefully considered. “We want to offer more torque in our engines”, the director concluded, hinting that compared to six-cylinder Mercedes, a hybrid V8 would be more conducive to the prestige of Amg.

Mercedes-Benz engineers are working at a new, still enigmatic supercar, caught in this video while testing at the Nurburginger Nordschleife. It is clear that this test mule is based on the Mercedes SL, but we don’t exactly know yet what car is hidden under the camouflage.
Rumors say that the german automaker is developing a bunch of new supercars including a modern edition of the 300 SL Gullwing, the SLC, and the SL AMG Black Series.
This one should be based on the 6.2 litres V8 built in Affalterbach by AMG and will probably be much lighter than other SL versions, since it will get a new, fixed, carbon-fiber roof and other lightened body parts. Other notable features such as the huge fender flares, and a rear diffuser with quad exhaust pipes contribute to distinguish the Black Series from the “normal” SL AMG.
