Plenty of news has surrounded the Alfa MiTo lately, with the MiTo GTA set for a Geneva debut, the guys at 4Car have revealed that we could also see a coupé of the zippy little Alfa.
The MiTo coupé would be called the Junior, and would be closely linked to the Lancia Fulvia as well, according to 4Car. We are a little more cautious about this project though, and will content ourselves with the Alfa MiTo GTA for the moment, which will have some impressive performance figures as is.

According to Autocar, the Alfa Romeo Mi.To GTA will make an appearance at the 2009 Geneva motor show this year and we should be seeing quite a sporty little job. At the Blogger Day in Varano, Italy, in July, Alfa engineers were debating how extreme the GTA should get: and the sports theme has won out according to Autocar.
The GTA should be equipped with the new 1.8 litre turbo with direct injection at 240hp, including electronic differential Q2 and rear wheel drive. The chassis on the Mi.To’s cousin, the Abarth Grande Punto, has already been appreciated by the market, and the MiTo GTA is set to mirror similarly the Fiat model.
Attention has been given to reducing the weight of the car with generous use of carbon and alluminium. Wider spoilers and new aerodynamics should give the hot hatch some spark, perhaps even keeping up with competition from the Mini Cooper S Works, but with a more economical price tag at 28,000 euros.

While the MiTo GTA doesn’t yet physically exist, it will become a reality, as declared by Luca de Meo in the course of the ufficial Alfa MiTo presentation. It’s apparently all just a question of time before we see the little sports version.
After last week’s event and live blogging, the most interesting news regarded the technical characteristics of the GTA: the choice will fall on a 1.8 turbo (or as Alfa specifies a 1750), capable of producing 230hp. The engine will also be equipped with direct injection, making the proposition even more intriguing.
We should see maximum torque kick in before 2000 revs, and some great flexibility at lower regimes. According to engineer Martinelli “from 80 to 120 the MiTo GTA plays with 8C” but we’ll have to wait 12 months before we see this little baby, as it won’t be released until summer 2009.
