US return for Alfa with 4C GTA?

By Alison

Alfa Romeo 4C Concept - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

The Alfa in the US saga has a new episode to add with reports from Italy that the first Alfa Romeo model in the US will be the highly anticipated 4C GTA which was presented at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. While not in production yet, apparently the Alfa 4C Concept will make it to market in North America before even the much talked about Alfa Giulia and Alfa SUV.

As already previously stated by Sergio Marchionne, the Giulia needs to iron out some design issues before it’s ready for the US, and now it seems the Fiat CEO has decided to launch straight into what fans hope will be Alfa’s first real sports model in years. It could certainly prove to be quite the debut if the 4C GTA lives up to expectation.

This particular model means much to the brand right now. It was finally put on the stand at the Geneva show at 4am the same day it was revealed because technicians weren’t sure if it was ready yet - still, they made it to the most important motor show in the world. The new Alfa 4C GTA could be the only indication that Alfa is back to its sports prowess in the modern era and the brand has it got its vitality back. If it proves good, it will make a lot of sense to debut it first in the US. Hopefully followed by good product, all the same.

The Alfa 4C GTA will mean a lot to Italians. It will prove that their beloved brand isn’t just limping along trying to compete with decent models, but ones without any real Alfa spirit. It will show that Alfa can still produce a quality, two-seater sports car, whether you like the design or not, at the cutting edge of sports technology. And it will bring back the Alfa brand to the difficult US market to indicate that the Italians still know how to make fine cars. While we won’t hold our breath, it all makes sense so we’ll be waiting to hear more on this in the future.

Alfa Romeo 4C Concept - Salone di Ginevra Live 2011

The Alfa Romeo 4C Concept has been unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and the big news is that the Alfa 4C could see production by 2012. According to Harald Wester the model is already in development and an ambitious market launch date by end 2012 is being aimed at.

The Alfa Romeo 4C Concept you see live in these pics from Geneva isn’t just a showroom dream, and Wester has said: “This is the Alfa we want for the future.” Could it finally give Alfa fans what they’ve been waiting for in a modern sporty Alfa model that will put the brand back in its rightful place as one of Italy’s great traditional sports car manufacturers? It’s just one model but there are many fingers crossed that it will be the revolution long awaited.

The new Alfa Romeo 4C Concept is a rear-wheel drive, two-seater coupé with a centrally positioned engine. It measures about four metres long and has a wheelbase just short of 2.4 metres. It has been designed to be compact and agile and many elements have been borrowed from the Alfa 8C Competizione. There is copious use of carbon fibre and aluminium and production 4C model should get Alfa’s 1750 turbo, direct-injection engine. It will also have TCT dual clutch transmission and Alfa DNA.

Alfa Romeo 4C GTA to production

By Alison

The Alfa Romeo 4C GTA planned for a 2011 Geneva show debut could already be headed for production. The new Alfa two-seater coupé is being described as the brand’s new “halo” car and could finally give the royal sporty treatment to a brand that many have been hoping would get back to its sports and racing roots.

The 4C GTA technical details we know so far: rear engine, rear-wheel drive, two-seater, lightweight coupé with a carbon fibre and aluminium chassis. At this stage rumours suggest it will have the same 1.8-litre engine as the Alfa Giulietta, but with power up to 250 hp. Reports deny that it is being built by Pininfarina and the Geneva debut is still doubtful due to “delays in the concept model construction”.

The carbon fibre cockpit is being built by specialist Dallara and should be their next take on their previous project of the KTM X-Bow. Will the 4C GTA save Alfa? Enthusiasts have been dreaming of a new sports car from the Fiat brand, and this time round it could prove to be affordable. About 25,000 units are planned and Alfa says it wants a price tag of about 40,000 euros. Compared to the 8C Competizione, it could bring the Alfa Romeo brand back to Italians, in sports style.
