Lamborghini history - Part 2: Lambo Murcielago

By theBride

As we announced yesterday, we are going to spend every day a little time down Lamborghini’s memory lane in order to better understand this maker’s tradition and to learn a bit more about its iconic vehicles. Today the limelight is set on the Lamborghini Murcielago, named after a fighting bull that during a corrida in 1879 managed to survive despite being hit by 28 sword strokes.

This amazing sports car has replaced the Diablo in 2001 as Lamborghini’s flagship vehicle up until 2010, delighting us with its unique features such as the scissors doors, the incredibly low-slung coupe body, and the roof line that rises just below 4 feet off the ground.

More Lamborghini history here.

Lamborghini Aventador the new Batman car

By Alison

Lamborghini Aventador new Batman car

The new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises will see Bruce Wayne driving the new Lamborghini Aventador as the vehicle of choice for the superhero. Tough gig, right? The Aventador will replace the Gotham millionaire’s previous ride, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640.

In these pics we see the Batman Aventador with Gotham plates and an elegant grey exterior. We think it would match a long-legged female beauty quite well and we’d love to see the filmmakers take the opportunity to build a heart-gripping scene around the Aventador. They could hardly leave it parked on the street outside the new Batman mansion now, could they?

New Lamborghini V12 details: Aventador LP700-4 leaked

By Alison

Lamborghini Aventador test mule

According to Autoblog.it and a reader source, the details of the new Lamborghini Murcielago replacement have been leaked, with the new model being called the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. The Aventador name has already been rumoured as a possible moniker for the new car, and the second part reveals a couple of other things about the new vehicle.

As the name is still unofficial, we can take the Aventador as a rumour likely to be true at this stage, while the new Lamborghini 6.5-litre V12 should have 700 hp and all-wheel drive. In documents apparently provided to the Italians, a top speed of 350 km/hr is mentioned as is an acceleration time to 100/km of just 2.9 seconds. At this stage, we would guess that torque is impressive as well.

The Aventador will have an electronically controlled Haldex four-wheel drive system and a new ISR (Independent Shifting Rods) transmission with a seventh gear, claimed to shift in just 50 milliseconds. With Lamborghini’s push towards lighter weight vehicles, the Aventador should weigh in at about 1,575 kg - similar to the 1,500 kg which has been estimated of late - and has a weight-power ratio of 2.25 kg/hp.

Autocar drives new V12 Lamborghini Murcielago replacement

By Alison

Lamborghini new V12 powertrain

Autocar has got the absolute exclusive on the new Lamborghini Murcielago, and has test driven the company’s new V12 engine unit. A third prototype vehicle was made available to Steve Sutcliffe at Nardo in Italy, 18 months after he test drove the first one, and has been described as the future of Lamborghini - defining the brand for the next ten years.

Some technical characteristics about the Murcielago replacement are already known - its carbonfibre tub and new suspension - but what Lamborghini won’t reveal is how much it weighs. Take a standard 1,700 kg weight and subtract whatever you think the carbonfibre parts have saved and you’ll have your answer, is how Maurizio Reggiani responds. Whatever you come up with, it’s starting to sound exciting as Lamborghini saves on weight, while still producing extreme performance cars in a world where emissions and fuel savings are ever more important.

The new V12 itself has a different sound, but Sutcliffe described the overall feeling of the initial prototype as more like a smooth, standard supercar with the kind of refinement we now expect from these models. The actual driving experience is one completely different from the current Murcielago. It’s sleek, quiet, controlled and balanced where the old model was unpredictable and difficult to handle.

The making of the Pagani vs Lamborghini Need for Speed Hot Pursuit video

By Alison

In this video we learn how the guys at Need for Speed made the snazzy Pagani Zonda vs Lamborghini Murcielago Hot Pursuit video. They came up with the idea of a live video shoot and so Pagani put together a prototype laboratory vehicle of the Zonda Cinque for the occasion, while the Murcielago got tarted up with its official police livery. And then they all took off to the Italian Dolomites for filming. Sounds like a tough job, doesn’t it? See how they made the video above, with the official Hot Pursuit Pagani and Lamborghini sequence after the jump.

Great car pics: the Lamborghini Murcielago under snow

Lamborghini Murcielago under snow

We had to put this picture up of a Murcielago covered in snow, from our guys at Autoblog.it, who wisely suggest being careful in the snow with all that horse power. The temperatures are dropping here in Europe as we prepare for winter, with ski slopes already opening and people putting away their cabriolet models. This could be our goodbye image for the Murcielago, as it gets replaced in the future by a model possibly called the Lamborghini Aventador, though no official announcement has been made.

Breaking news: Lamborghini new V12 details

By Alison

Lamborghini new V12 powertrain

After our speculation earlier about whether the Lamborghini Aventador is the new Murcielago or the Sesto Elemento production model, the company has at least released details of its new powerplant. A new Lamborghini V12 is on its way. It will be a 6.5-litre engine with 700 hp and 690 Nm of torque.

According to the company, they took carte blanche to develop this new unit and they’ve matched it to a new transmission as well - the Lamborghini ISR gearbox. Lamborghini Aventador: the Murcielago replacement or Sesto Elemento production model?

By Alison

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Concept - live at Paris 2010

All sorts of goodies are coming from Lamborghini, starting with the Murcielago subsitute. The name was widely believed to be the Jota but it turns out that it will most probably be called the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4. The name was revealed in the Murcielago replacement presentation held at Sant’Agata recently, away from the prying ears of journalists.

The presentation took place with some faithful Lamborghini clients present and the name choice has fallen to that of a famous breed of fighting bulls. The Aventador is reported to be a stylistic evolution on the Gallardo, with some elements from the Reventon supercar concept, as well.

It will have a 6.5-litre V12 engine with 700 hp, all-wheel drive and a seven-speed sequential gearbox. It will have a monocoque carbon chassis, reducing weight by about 230 kg with torsional rigidity up by about 70 percent. The performance figures sound very curious: 0-100 in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 350 km/hr. More after the jump.

Lamborghini V12 Goodbye Murcielago parade

By Alison

Lamborghini V12 Murcielago goodbye parade

Are there times when you wish you could just pop across to Italy to enjoy some Italian motoring traditions? If so, this would be one of them. To say goodbye to the Lamborghini Murcielago, as the last unit rolled off the production line recently, a parade in various town centres of the Emilia Romagna region was organised as a tribute to a famous icon from these parts.

The Sant’Agata factory has made its name through the Murcielago and its V12 engine and while it’s time to look to the future, there’s nothing wrong with giving the past its proper farewell. After this it will only be time to wait with impatience as Lamborghini develops its new model. These pics come from the company itself, via our guys at Autoblog.it.

Lamborghini Murcielago Least Green Car of 2010

By Toni M.

lamborghini murcielago

It may one of the most beautiful looking dream cars of the world, but the Lamborghini Murcielago has been named the Least Green Car of the Year 2010 by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA).

The Italian super car according to ETA releases the same amount of CO2 gas as felling a football pitch-sized forest of trees, and produces five times more CO2 per mile than the Toyota iQ which was named the greenest car of the year.

Andrew Davis, director at the ETA, said: “With emissions five times worse than the greenest car, the Lamborghini is the bull in an environmental china shop. Thankfully, there are very few on the roads and there is an increasing choice of environmentally-sound cars.”

The 2010 Green Car Awards, with the best and worst in each category after the jump.

Next Lamborghini Murcielago pics: towards the Lamborghini hybrid

By Alison

New Lamborghini Murcielago 2012

The next Lamborghini Murcielago is set to look something like this, with a lighter, minimalist design. The new Murcielago will be a vast improvement on the previous one, utilising an aluminium spaceframe chassis from Audi, with a carbon fibre bodyshell.

With a lighter body, the next Murcielago is destined to really deliver on performance, with a 6.0-litre V12 engine with about 700 hp. A larger body will be combined with four-wheel drive for greater handling.

More efficient technology such as the first Lamborghini stop-start system and energy regeneration will be employed, preparing for development of the first Lamborghini hybrid sometime in 2015.

The design also gets a makeover, with updated spoiler and headlights, and a completely revised rear that includes LED tail-lights and a modified exhaust. The new Lamborghini Murcielago is expected to emerge in 2012.
