Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 hits 331km/h on the Autobahn (video)

By Adrian

Youtube user Kaipeternicolas just uploaded a new video on the popular website starring a Porsche 997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 thundering on a German Autobahn at night and hitting 331km/h (206 mph) of top speed.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 is the most powerful production 911 997 out there and comes with a 6-speed transmission specifically designed for racing use, which allows it to go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds, reaching the 200km/h mark (124 mph) in less than 12 seconds. The RS 4.0 is a 600 units limited edition issued this year that somewhat anticipates the end of the line for the 911 997 production.

Porsche GT3 by Reil Performance

By Adrian

Porsche GT3 Reil Performance

German tuner REIL Performance presents its own rendition of Porsche 911 GT3, boasting a fine tuning and of the already quite outstanding model that is not too invasive. The GT3 is a high performance version of the Porsche 997 sportscar that uses a 3.8 litre flat six engine producing 435 hp. REIL Performance slightly re-calibrated the ECU and added a specially designed Akrapovic exhaust system - inclusive of damper control system - to boost the car overall power up to 455 hp.

Aesthetically, the car looks very similar to the 997 (optional big decals from REIL Performance aside, of course) The German tuner has also installed a HLS lift kit which can change the ground clearance of the vehicle according to the driver’s needs. No information about the price of tuning has been released.

Porsche launches the 911 GT3 RSR for the 2012 racing season

By Adrian

Porsche 911 GT3 RSR 2012

Porsche presents the 911 GT3 RSR, the new 911 sports car for those customers who will compete in Gran Turismo racing next season. The car is based on the 997 version of the GT3 RS and it is likely to represent the end of the line for the racing evolution of this model.

The main distinctive feature in comparison to the 2011 model is the fact that the new car is 48mm wider, but the real novelty is in the revised aerodynamics, now featuring a different air intake on the hood and new openings in the rear side section replacing the air scoop on the engine hood. The engine will remain the classic 4.0 liter 6-cylinder boxer unit, but the power has been increased by 5 hp, bringing it up to 460 hp. The 6 speed manual transmission is operated by paddle shifters.

Porsche 911 GT3 RSR has been built according to the rules and limitations of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, meaning that the car is suitable for racing at the 24hrs of Le Mans, in the FIA World Endurance Championship, in the Le Mans Series and in the International GT Open. The first models will be ready in January and the price will be around the half million Euros.

BMW M3 GTS vs Porsche 911 GT3

By Alison

The Porsche 911 GT3 is a kind of sacred monster, and definitely the more classic of the two cars in this Autocar face-off. Still, the BMW M3 GTS is currently a very trendy performance car of the moment, and although very different from the Porsche, it shares a similar philosophy. But can the brawny BMW keep the pace with the 911?

The video starts with some technical stuff because the benchmark this time has been nominated as speed. But really, the comparisons were never going to stop there. Apart from the differences in weight, and the entirely different gearboxes used, traction control and the like, there is history, image and purist philosophy to be taken into account here.

If you’re already divided into the BMW or Porsche performance camp, this video is unlikely to change your mind. For the rest of us it’s interesting and certainly exhilarating to watch the two models fly around the track. See the conclusions at the end.

Video: Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Pikes Peak

By Alison

I have abandoned any ambitions I may have had to becoming a rally car driver on seeing this video of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup attack Pike Peaks in the legendary race. The GT3 Cup, driven by Jeff Zwart, set the best time in the 2WD Time Attack class of 11′31″095. Pikes Peak victory, though, remains with Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima who has won on previous occasions and holds the all-time record of 10′01″408 achieved in 2007.

Jaguar XKR 75 beats the Porsche 911 GT3

By Alison

Is it me or do the guys at Autocar get to try all the cool cars? This 90-second video review details the new Jaguar XKR 75, described as Jaguar’s fastest production car. Not only that, but according to this review, it can be considered a rival to the Porsche 911 GT3, which is tough adversary in anyone’s books.

The Jaguar XKR 75 has all the technology you can imagine, with more power and torque, in a harmonious unit that is also very sexy. Jaguar has also made the clever decision of making everything on the options list part of the standard package instead. The XKR 75 costs just 10,000 pounds more than the standard version and makes the Porsche 911 GT3 look very expensive. In short, “this thing is quite beautiful to drive.”

Porsche 911 GT3 RS 40 year drive video

By Alison

The historical video celebrates the life of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS (RennSport), tracing a 40 year history. While we probably identify the first modern model of this kind as the Porsche 996 of 2003, the RS tradition actually started back in 1972. This video describes how the Porsche 911 GT3 RS was created and if you’re a fan, there’s so much footage here that you won’t know where to look.

The video takes us to the second generation 911 GT3 RS which is described as the “definitive track car for the road”. It’s equipped with a 3.8-litre engine with 450 hp and plenty of Porsche technology. This is not, though, a simple sports road car model - developed by Porsche motorsports, this really takes track driving to the roads. The video is a fantastic comparison of Porsche across the years - check it out above.

Porsche 911 GT3 R official pics

By Alison

Porsche 911 GT3 R

Here’s the Porsche 911 GT3 R officially presented at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham. The 911 GT3 R is a race-use only Porsche, in line with FIA GT rules, and includes modifications on the GT3 Cup, which in turn was based on the GT3 RS “standard” model. The GT3 R has a flat-six, 4.0-litre engine replacing the 3.8. It has 480 hp and a reduced weight of 1,200 kg.

The GT3 R has sports ABS, traction control and transmission assistance to avoid the rear wheels blocking when going up the gears. Changes to the aerodynamics are part of the package and include a huge rear spoiler, and the car is also fitted with adjustable SACHS suspension. The Porsche 911 GT3 R will cost about 279,000 euros, taxes excluded. It will be available in spring.

Porsche stand at Frankfurt: live pics of 911 Turbo, GT3 RS and Sport Classic

By Alison

Francoforte 2009: stand Porsche

From the 911 Sport Classic to the 911 Turbo and GT3 RS, the Porsche stand at the Frankfurt motor show had so much on display we hardly knew where to look. New Porsche president Michael Macht made the presentation to the press, with plenty of space dedicated to the Panamera as well.

The 911 Turbo coupe and cabrio were on show, equipped with the new 3.8-litre twin turbo engine with direct injection and 500 hp. PDK transmission is included with the welcome modification of steering wheel paddles and program options of Sport, Sport Plus and Launch Control indicated. New features such as Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) have also been developed. The 911 Turbo can be recognised by the new titanium air intakes on the front bumper, LED lights, larger exhaust and new alloy wheels.

The 911 GT3 RS with the 3.8-litre was also presented, along with the GT3 Cup 2010 and the 911 Sport Classic. The GT3 RS has 15 hp more than the GT3, taking total power to 450 hp, thanks to modifications to the air intake system and a lighter weight of 1,370 kg. It has a new aerodynamic kit, lighter door panelling, roll bar, titanium exhaust, PASM electronic suspension system, Porsche Stability Management system and new alloy wheels. Maximum torque is 430 Nm at 6,750 rpm and the GT3 RS is only available with manual gearbox.

In addition to all this, from 2010, Porsche is introducing new optionals, in the form of a lithium ion battery for track use, which reduces weight by ten kilograms compared to the conventional lead battery. Front tyre mechanisms also allow for raising the wheelbase and a larger fuel tank of 90 litres is also available. For the real die-hard sports fans, you can forego air conditioning and the radio and while Porsche has a luxury name in terms of cup holders, get the Panamera. You won’t find any of them on the GT3 RS.
