Group test: Porsche GT3 vs Vantage V12 vs Audi R8 V10 vs Corvette ZR1

In one mega group-test Evo sees which is the best road-racer model out of the Porsche 911 GT3, the Aston Martin V12 Vantage, the Audi R8 V10 and the Corvette ZR1. While describing this test as determining the most “hard-core” model, the introduction doesn’t really specify the criteria.

In fact, after a look at the engine specs and details, the Corvette is pegged as one of the more interesting models due to its very fast engine. But if you were to explain from the beginning that by “road-racing” you mean vehicles that can go fast elegantly, corner well, and give an overall fast but assured driving experience, you’d probably understand that the ZR1 is not quite in the league of the others (although some accusations of bias were levelled at Evo in the comments).

After an initial drive, Evo says:

Porsche 911 GT3 video test drive from Autocar

By Alison

Among all the 911 versions, there is one “model [that] stands out above all else”; Autocar is more than enthusiastic about the Porsche 911 GT3. Test driving the GT3 around some mountain roads to get us all envious over the engine sound, and check out what’s new in this version.

The engine is up to 3.8 litres and a power increase to 435 hp gives an added 20 hp on the current version. With a larger rear wing, the Porsche 911 GT3 surprises with a PDK gear box. This for Autocar, means that the engine and the classic six speed manual shift is one of the best combinations in motoring.

For all the finer details, including wheels, brakes and aerodynamics, watch the GT3 test drive video. All in all the conclusion goes that this is “an absolute gem of a car”.

Porsche 911 GT3 runs 7:40 at the Ring

By Alison

Porsche has declared a time of seven minutes and 40 seconds for its new 911 GT3 3.8 model, driven on the north side of the Nurburgring by Walter Rohrl. The vehicle is identical to the production model that customers will have, and in this case a challenge to rival the Nissan GT-R, wasn’t lacking.

Another discussion regarding the veracity of times has started, comparing the Porsche 997 with the GT-R. Nissan declared 7:27 for the GT-R, with Porsche challenging, saying that for a production series on sale in the US, 7:54 would be closer to reality, outside of tyres and lowered bases used to obtain the record.

It seems that Rohrl has also tested the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, achieving a time of 7:45, throwing Ferrari into the mix as well. The challenge is still open and the only thing that’s certain is that we’re talking some very fast cars.
