The new SRT Viper has just been unveiled at the 2012 New York International Auto Show and it is already the car of the hour. Following the leaks and the official photo gallery, it’s now the turn of a 7-minute long official video that finally show us the model in action on the road.
We have thoroughly discussed this model in our previous post (also inclusive of the official press release) but let’s just point out that the model is powered by a frightening 8.4-litre V10 delivering 649 ho and 815 Nm of maximum torque, making it the American sportscar with the best power-to-weight ratio ever.
The chassis of the new SRT Viper has a torsional stiffness that is 50% better than the previous generation, while the overall waight has gone down by 45 kg. One of the most evident new feature is the X trellis placed over the engine and linked to the suspension: this move enhances the overall rigidity of the whole structure and makes the suspension itself work better.
The new SRT Viper has arrived. The third generation of the famous American sportscar has been unveiled at the ongoing 2012 New York International Auto Show and, as we anticipated yesterday, its design remains loyal to the previous version of the model: a combination of elegance and aggressiveness that surely never goes unnoticed.
The model will be made available in two versions, ’standard’ and GTS, with the latter equipped with electronic adjustable suspension and a slew of other accessories that would increase the comfort of the car. Power will come from a mid-mounted 8.4-litre V10 overhead-valve engine delivering an estimated 640 hp with 813 Nm (600 lb-ft) of peak torque, which is the most torque of any naturally aspirated sports car engine in the world. The car is also significantly lighter than the model it is about to replace, while the new chassis has also been improved and is now 50% better in torsional stiffness.
In the comparison with the previous models, the quality of both materials and finishing in the cabin represent a huge step forward: top notch leather upholstery, Sabelt seats and the advanced info-tainment system (featuring a 72 screen in the middle of the dashboard) surely set it apart from its predecessors. No analogic instrumentation can be found in the car. To find out more about the new STR Viper, check out the all-comprehensive official Press Release right after the jump.

Computer-generated images of the eagerly awaited SRT Viper have surfaced on the internet. These screenshots comes from a video-presentation of a famous video game, and provide us with a first taste of the design of the car, which is bound to appear in its definitive form at the imminent New York International Auto Show (April 6-15). Unfortunately the images are quite grainy, but nonetheless it is basically the first time we can see the actual design of the new American supercar.
At a first glance it is evident that the new Viper might have lost its Dodge badge, retains the proportions and shape of the first two generations of this model, with its signature long hood now sporting three air-intakes to let its powerful engine breath. As usual, the long front section of the car makes it look like the cabin is almost sitting on the rear axle, while its sleek sides lead to a rear end with revised tail-lights and a flashy rear spoiler.
In order to get the actual technical specs as well as more details on the much-anticipated new Viper, we will have to wait for just a few more hours, when SRT will unleash the official press release and an hopefully large number of high-res pics of its brand new monster.

In an interview with Viper Magazine, Chrysler’s SRT Brand President and CEO Ralph Gilles announced that the long awaited new generation of the Dodge Viper will be officially unveiled at the New York International Auto Show (April 6-15). Apparently - in contrast with some early reports - the new version of the famous supercar will not be as brutal as its predecessors, in an attempt to appeal to a wider share of the market. However, no official data or specs about the new model have been released so far.
Rumor has it that the next Viper will be powered by a 8.7-litre V10 unit - which would be the the biggest production engine ever to carry a Dodge badge - but it is still unclear whether it will use Fiat’s Multi-Air technology or not. Its output should be somewhere in the 700 hp area, although it will be limited by the ESP. Many other rumors surround the development of this model (some say it will use Maserati Granturismo’s frame, some say it will make large use of Ferreri technology and so on), way too many: we think there is no point in speculating over what cannot be confirmed just yet. Let’s just wait and see.

In a recent interview conducted by Rick Kranz of Automotive News at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Dodge main man Reid Bigland stated that the redesigned Viper “will appeal to a broader segment of the market“, adding that it will offer “comforts that people come to expect in a high-performance vehicle today”
He did not overtly give any hint in regard to a possible weakening of the output, but the statement would be quite in contrast with the last rumors we heard about the new model. However, Mr. Bigland’s last words apparently confirmed that those who were attracted to the Viper in the past will certainly be attracted to the new one too.
The new model is expected to debut at some point in 2012, but at the moment there seems to be no chance to see any of it at the next North American International Auto Show in Detroit (January 9-22). Well, let’s just wait and see.
