Hyundai Veloster line up at the 2011 SEMA

By Adrian

Hyundai Veloster SEMA 2011

Hyundai brought at the SEMA no less than six different renditions of the Veloster. Besides Rhys Millen’s Rally Car there were also an all white concept car from PM Lifestyle, a turbocharged tuning from ARK Performance, and three version of the car - named Gaming, Tech and Music - courtesy of Remix. These last three models show interesting aesthetic combinations, using aerodynamic kits and matching colors for both interior and exterior of the car. The Veloster from ARK Performance instead can be considered as an anticipation of what Hyundai might officially come up with in a few months, meaning a racing-oriented version sporting a turbocharged 4-cylinder 1.6 engine delivering 210 hp.

DMC Ferrari 458 Italia Milano at the SEMA

By Adrian

DMC 458 Italia Milano SEMA 2011

German tuner DMC presented its own Ferrari 458 Italia “Milano” at the 2011 SEMA. The standard 4.5-litres V8 engine has been mated to different exhaust system and electronics, enough to boast its power from 570 to 602 hp and add another 5 km/h of top speed, which DMC has pushed up to 330 km/h. The real star here is the new valved stainless steel exhaust, which is 19 kg lighter than the standard kit and uses special protective heat shields. Besides, a control to manually keep the exhaust valves open will also be made available as an optional extra, only in those markets that allow for this solution, of course.

Many parts of the original bodywork have been replaced with carbon fibre bits, including side skirts, rear diffuser, sections of the front bumper and wing mirrors. DMC’s Ferrari 458 Italia Milano uses 21″ alloy wheels on the front and 22″ on the rear axle, fitted with 255/30 and 335/25 performance tyres respectively.

Mazda MX-5 Super20 at the SEMA

By Adrian

Mazda MX-5 Super20

Following last year appearance at the SEMA, the prototype known as MX-5 Super20 is once again at the Vegas event with a brand new and flashy Hyper Orange Mica color scheme - with some black stripe to soften the visual blow - and matt black hard top. In comparison to the standard Mazda MX-5 it derives from, this car also features wider arch wheels with 16″ alloys fitted with Toyo Proxes RA-1 245/45ZR16 high-performance tyres.

The MX-5 Super20 is powered by an upgraded 2.0 liter 4-cylinder unit coupled with a Cosworth supercharger, a new exhaust system and revised ECU. Inside there is a color-matched roll bar and black leather seats with suede inserts and orange contrast stitching .

The MX-5 Super20 that was at the SEMA last year was a tribute to Mazda America’s 20th anniversary, and this 2011 version still maintains some key-features of its predecessor, namely the permanent hard-top, roll bar, 16″ alloys and Cosworth supercharger.

Mazda MX-5 Spyder: more pictures available

Mazda MX-5 Spyder: tutte le foto e le informazioni ufficiali - SEMA 2011

It is fair to say that Mazda MX-5 Spyder is going to be one of the most interesting concept cars to be on display at the 2011 SEMA. The main reason for that is obviously that diminutive canvas it calls a ‘roof’, which somewhat confirms early reports stating that Mazda MX-5’s next generation will be super light.

The MX-5 Spyder boasts a really aggressive-looking style, lowered ride height and Advan RS 17″ wheels with Yokohama performance tyres, while its signature grenadine-red soft-top is the result of the cooperation between Mazda North America and Magna Car Top Systems. The car is powered by a tuned-up version of the MX-5’s standard 160 hp 2.0-liter engine, which has also been modified in order to run on isobutanol, a biofuel used by the Mazda/Dyson Racing team in the American Le Mans Series. Other remarkable features of this concept car include Brembo braking system as well as upgraded air-intake and exhaust systems, while the interiors make large use of leather and suede coupled with Silk Gray Metallic-colored trim.

Scion iQ: here's the line-up for the 2011 SEMA

By Adrian

Scion iQ: ecco quelle presentate al SEMA 2011

Scion is a brand created by Toyota for young people looking for affordable cars, and the iQ is surely a fine example of that: a 3-meters long 2-seats hatchback that doesn’t need to stop by the petrol station that often. However, young people like tuning as well, and at the SEMA they will able to see just how far they can go with it.

Scion will be at the Las Vegas event with three tuned-up variations of its diminutive city car: iQ-MR by Tatsu, iQ-RS by Michael Chang and iQ-Rx by Jon Sibal, and all three of them really push the boundaries of what we thought it was possible to do with the iQ. Check out these extreme renditions in our photo gallery.

Mazda 2 Turbo2 and MX-5 Spyder concepts at the SEMA 2011

By Adrian

Mazda MX-5 Spyder e Mazda 2 Turbo2 SEMA 2011

Mazda will introduce two concept cars at the next SEMA: the MX-5 Spyder and Mazda 2 Turbo2. The MX-5 Spyder represents Mazda’s willingness to create an extreme and lighter version of its classic two-seater, adopting a solution quite similar to what we have seen for the Boxster Spyder: a hard tonneau and a skimpy canvas top replacing the current folding top. It doesn’t get any more minimalistic than that. This solution as well as a new aerodynamic kit, lowered ride height, Brembo brakes and alloys add up to MX-5 well-known fighting spirit.

Mazda 2 Turbo2 is the result of a classic engine swap as the 263 hp 2.3-litre 4-cylinder engine of the CX-7 has been fitted in Mazda 2 compact chassis. Obviously, aerodynamics, brakes, suspension and ride height as well had to be upgraded in order to take all that power. Besides, its exterior designed has been revamped as well, and you can have a glimpse of the outcome in the picture below. No information has been released about the performance of this model, which is destined to remain a simple show car anyway.

A new 8-minutes-long official video starring Lexus GS 350 F-Sport has been released by the Japanese manufacturer. Chevrolet to unveil new tunings of Sonic and Cruze at the 2011 SEMA

By Adrian

Chevrolet Sonic, Cruze Z-Spec e Dusk al SEMA 2011

The upcoming 2011 SEMA will see the unveiling of some Chevrolet tunings based on Sonic and Cruze models, a further demonstration of GM commitment towards smaller and fuel efficient cars. Chevrolet vice-president Chris Perry stated that “the heritage of Chevrolet cars like the Corvette and Camaro is being expressed in smaller packages for the next generation.

The Sonic Z-Spec 1 has upgraded calipers, suspension and exhaust system while red paintjob, rear spoiler, graphic package, unique grille and white 18″ wheels are its most distinctive aesthetic traits. The cabin features red and black finishing and a number of other details accentuating its sporty attitude. The Sonic Z-Spec 2 can be considered an aggressive evolution of the Spec 1, from which it can be easily recognized becuase of the white livery and black rims. These two models will soon be joined by a third variation called Sonic Dusk, which will be quite similar to its two ’sisters’ but with less aggressive looks. A concept called Sonic Z-Spec 4D will also be presented, but this car will underline a more formal vibe of the model thanks to its Ashen Grey Metallic exterior.

Two tuned concepts of the Cruze will also make an appearence at the SEMA: these models will be presented with Z-Spec and Dusk packages, featuring the same changes described for the Sonic. Chevrolet did not provide any more technical info about the models.

Lexus to launch GS 350 F-Sport at the 2011 SEMA

By Adrian

Lexus GS 350 F-Sport

Lexus released official pictures of the GS 350 F-Sport, which will be unveiled at the imminent 2011 SEMA in Vegas. In comparison to the GS range recently unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the F-Sport uses more marked sporty features, meaning new bumpers, different aerodynamics, 19″ alloys, upgraded brakes and sports settings electronically controlled by the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system. The interior uses red perforated leather with aluminum trim, aluminum pedals and a different F-Sport badged steering wheel.

Power comes from the same 3.5-liter V6 engine equipping the GS350 which - quite surprisingly - hasn’t been modified: it delivers 306 hp and 375 Nm of torque and is coupled with a 6 speed automatic transmission that will push the car from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 5.7 seconds. Besides, at a later time, the F-Sport will probably become available with the hybrid engine of the GS 450h as well.

This model can also be considered as a partial preview of Lexus GS-F, the model that will challenge the likes of BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 AMG with a yet-undisclosed engine range. However, since rumors of a LF-A-derived V10 have been denied, the choice of a turbocharged V8 for this future model seems now more than likely.

Fiat 500 Titanium and 500 Carbon to debut at the 2011 SEMA

By Adrian

Fiat 500 titanium teaser

Fiat and Mopar will launch two special editions of the 500 at the upcoming SEMA. Unlike many of the cars on display at the Las Vegas event, the two models - renamed ‘500 Titanum’ and ‘500 Carbon’ - will actually become available for the whole American market in the form of two Mopar aesthetic packages, that will have to be integrated to the standard model.

Fiat 500 Titanium (teaser above) boasts a brand new front end, with re-designed grille and bumper. Other distinguishing features are black livery, 16″ wheels, lowered ride height, side skirts, customized braking and exhaust systems and rear spoiler. Besides, it sports handles and wing-mirrors with matt titanium finishing. As for the interiors, the black theme continues with black leather seats, black carmats with Titanium Metallic “500″ logo and black finishing with Titanium Metallic inserts.

The 500 Carbon uses a blue livery, blackened windows, re-designed front bumper - with integrated satin carbon fiber fog-lamp bezels and lip spoiler - and 17″ aluminum rims. Its ride height has been lowered, while air intake and exhaust systems have been modified. Satin carbon fiber door handles and mirror caps complete the exterior look of the car. The passenger compartment is highlighted by Anodized Azzurro accents, and features black leather sport seats, black chrome finishing and an interesting carbon fiber instrument panel.

Kia Rio B-Spec to be introduced at the 2011 SEMA

By Adrian

Kia Rio B-Spec

Korean carmaker Kia will unveil the Rio B-Spec at the 2011 SEMA. The car is a racing version of the Rio model which has been developed by Kinetic Motorsports (the company that administered the same treatment to Kia’s own Forte Koup). Equipped with an enhanced version of the 1.6 liters engine - delivering 140hp - it also uses a roll cage and racing brakes and suspension. Unlike many of the cars that will be at the SEMA in Vegas, the Rio B-Spec is not a simple tuned-up version of an original car, it is designed according to the rules of certain American racing formulas in which it will compete.

Obviously, this also gives us the chance to see how a sporty version of the Rio would taste like. No plans have been revealed in regard to taking this car to Europe as the 1.6 engine of the American version of the Kia has never been used in these markets. In Europe the Kia is equipped with the more economical 1.2 petrol engine (85hp) as well as the 1.1 three-cylinder and 1.4 four-cylinder diesel engines (producing 75hp and 90hp respectively).
