The BMW 1 Series M Coupé turns out it could be a more attractive model than the company first thought, and according to reports from UK Car Dealer, a 1M CSL model could be under consideration. With BMW 1M production and allocation across markets planned cautiously due to the economic crisis, it would seem that now BMW only has to increase its prospects.
To be fair, it’s not that a BMW 1 Series M CSL is being considered, but rather that the company is refusing to rule it out. Apparently it could be just the kind of cherry on the cake the market would like to follow more successful initial sales than first planned. On the UK market pre-sales of the 1M have started well, and the entire allocation for that market could be sold in just a few weeks.
BMW product manager James Morrison says:
There is scope for a CSL version. This car has certainly generated a buzz. When we planned for this car we were cautious, but now there’s some hype surrounding the 1M so there’s clearly going to be some people looking at what we can do next. M is the pinnacle of engineering so if there’s a CSL proposition or something really different that we could consider then we would. If there’s something special and unique we can do with it then absolutely we would.
The only further consideration is whether a lighter and faster version would justify the additional cost. The BMW 1 Series M currently sells at about £40,000 (nearly €46,000), so whether another 20k to about 60,000 pounds can be pulled off becomes more problematic, depending on how “special” the new car would be.
The new BMW 1 Series M is among the most talked-of sports cars out there at the moment and BMW has no problems showing it off in this new 1M gallery, in all its orange glory. The 1 Series M Coupé has been designed to embody the original M Sport ideal, heir to the BMW E30 M3, and can even put the current M3 in some difficulty in that regard. We wouldn’t mind seeing it in a different colour by now, but are happy enough to check out these new 1 Series M pics on a Saturday afternoon.
BMW certainly gave us a treat at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, bringing along its sexy burnt orange 1 Series M coupé, together with the 1 Series coupé and cabriolet restyling and the sleek new BMW 6 Series cabriolet. The model on show is the 650i convertible with its direct-injected 4.4-litre V8 which produces 400 hp. It will go on sale in the US in spring and will cost a pretty penny at nearly 92,000 USD. It’s a good looking model but it would want to be at that price. Still, BMW will be gunning for luxury convertible buyers for summer and you couldn’t get much better looking than this. See the models in our live pics below.
This is what we really wanted from BMW for a Chirstmas video - a look at the 1 Series M coupe in action alongside the original BMW E30 M3. The latter is intended as the true predecessor to the new 1 Series M coupe, which itself is supposed to get back to BMW M Sport roots. The jury is still out on that front but so far it looks promising with a few modifications made to pare things back and get back to basics. You’ll have to be patient with the video as the opening includes lots of jerky shots of a garage door, but if you’re dying to see the track action, skip to the five-and-a-half minute mark.
The guys at Bimmerfile have been doing the number crunching on Nurburgring lap times from the new BMW 1 Series M, compared to other models in the BMW line-up. According to the report, new 1M does the Ring in 8min 12sec, although we’ve seen more than once over the last few days that M fans had expected an even faster and more powerful model. The 1 Series M has the N54 engine with 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque.
The rub is the M3 comparison figures. The old M3 E46 with its six-cylinder unit and 343 hp laps the Nurburgring in 8min and 22sec, so that puts this ‘entry level’ M faster than the old M3. Compared to the current M3 E92, BMW has made sure that the 1M doesn’t outdo its bigger sister, which records a lap time of 8:05. Its V8 engine has 420 hp, but the model weighs about 85 kg more. The BMW 1 Series M coupé has finally been revealed before it has its official debut at next year’s Detroit Auto Show in January. In what is intended to be an entry-level BMW M model, the 1 Series M has impressive performance stats and should prove to be every bit as worthy of the ‘M’ badge for fans as the BMW M3 model.
Using the N54 six-cylinder, three-litre engine, the M1 model has 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque. Acceleration to 100 km/hr is measured in 4.9 seconds, and top speed is limited to 250 km/hr. It will go on sale in Europe at a price of about 55,000 euros, making that cheaper than an M3 and confirming its entry-level status.
The engine is the same as that used on the Z4 sDrive35iS and will have a six-speed manual gearbox in true sports style. An overboost function has been included for more torque across a short period of time and there’s the M division differential, too. An aerodynamic kit includes a few new features with a lowered body by 20mm, wider front end, large air intake at the front and things called ‘air curtains’ which channel airflow around the front wheels to reduce drag.
If you’re already a Bimmer fan you won’t need convincing that the new BMW 1 Series M is going to be a hot model. This video may be a little too PR happy for some, but it gives us a look at the upcoming model and shows, just after yesterday, a significant competitor to the Audi RS3. For many the BMW 1 Series M may be a uselessly tuned coupé model for track fun but not daily driving, but it’s difficult not to acknowledge its impressive engineering and performance.
The new BMW 1 Series M is a classic M model which is good news for fans. According to reports, the new 1 Series M looks like it will tick nearly all the boxes of the beloved features of M Sport models. It will probably be presented in January 2011, most likely at the Detroit Auto Show and should prove to be a return to the M cars of old. For more details on how this drives, check out the EVO 1 Series M test drive video below.
The new BMW 1 Series M Coupé will be officially presented at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show in January, but BMW is slowly releasing some information regarding its hot little coupé to whet our appetite. The compact 1 Series M should get back to its roots after some BMW purists may be skeptical about the current BMW M3.
The new model will be equipped with a 3.0-litre, in-line six, twin turbo engine with 340 hp and strictly a six-speed manual gearbox. No torque features have been released but BMW expects this little number to weigh in at about 1,500 kg and pricing should sit between the M3 and the 135i Coupé.
It looks like BMW is aiming for a real enthusiast’s car despite doing silly stuff like releasing this ‘teaser’ shots which we don’t really understand the point of. For the rest of the official details, and we imagine some proper pics, we’ll have to wait until mid-December.

I went from goosebumps to wanting to cry with this video. The BMW 1 Series M couldn’t be more of a tease as we wait for its official unveiling, but this is a great video that gets to the heart of what the M is all about. Following in the footsteps of the BMW M3 tradition, the 1 Series M is about sports driving and attention to detail both inside and out.
The 1 Series M should appear before Christmas but if Paris is too early, we suspect a live debut will happen early next year before sales kick off in the first half of 2011. After the jump is the first spy shot of the 1 Series M interior with more at the 1addicts forum. Meanwhile, if you speak German, check out this video on YouTube of the first BMW 1 Series M test drive.
