According to the latest rumours, the six-cylinder 3.8-litre boxer engine with direct injection system found under the hood of the car, could have a tri-turbo induction system. The task of the third turbocharger, a smaller unit mounted closer to the engine, would be to further boost low-end response, while increasing power and improving efficiency. To deliver at the medium and higher end of the rev there are the two remaining turbochargers, similar to the Borg-Warner units with variable turbine geometry currently in use. The power output is expected to increase to 530/550 hp combined with lower fuel consumptions and emissions than the current model. The Porsche 911 Turbo 991-series is scheduled to launch in early 2013.
