If these reports are confirmed, it will bring a smile to the face of all Italian fans: the Fiat group could produce three sports cars for each of its brands, in 2010, confirming rumours that have been circulating regarding niche models dedicated to passion, with a capital “P”.
Starting with Abarth, the re-born brand could be working on a roadster project inspired by the Lotus Elise, with a 1.4 Tjet from the 500 and Punto Abarth. A feather weight two-seater would be the other elements, with a central engine and rear wheel drive which haven’t been seen since the Fiat X1/9 and Lancia Beta Montecarlo. Fiat is looking for a partner for the chassis, to limit assembly operations, and could even collaborate with Lotus to provide consultancy and materials.

For its part, Lancia could finally bring to light the Fulvia project, with a possible coupè-cabriolet with a metal roof. The real news is that it could have a new platform and rear wheel drive, to be shared with a small Alfa Romeo coupè, inspired by the Giulietta Sprint. This is enough to set the heart fluttering for those Italians who have to look overseas to satisfy their hunger for exciting driving.
