The commercial relaunch of the Italian company will inevitably pass to the United States, at least that’s what many employees and the protagonist in the launch, Sergio Marchionne, are thinking.
Sergio recently received an honorary degree in management engineering from the Polytechnic university of Turin and has said that “it’s impossible to manufacture cars in Europe and then sell them to the US while making a profit”. Alfa Romeo is evaluating, with calculator in hand, the best adapted facilities overseas for the production of some models from its range.
The most suitable places could be the US, Mexico or Ontario in Canada. The latter is apparently interested in hosting the assembly chain for Alfa and dalton McGuinty, Ontario state premier, has demonstrated to Marchionne that it would be a valid investment in a region with the qualified personnel, infrastructure and transport required.
Ontario is also close to Michigan, where major US car manufacturers have their facilities and where a large number of customers come from. Marchionne is hoping to bring the Alfa Romeo brand to the US by the end of 2010/2011 and a decision could be made in the next six months.
