The simultaneous presence on the road of the new Carrera 4 and 4S, Turbo and GT3 certainly does not prevent Porsche engineers to work on the development of other future variants for the 911’s body. These spy photos show us for the first time the upcoming new version of the Targa, disguised as a Convertible but recognizable by the the clearly visible removable center roof section and Targa roll-bar.
The new 911 Targa will then come with a much more impactful and peculiar solution than the one adopted by the outgoing generation, which was using nothing but a large sunroof glass that could slide towards the rear and disappear in just 7 seconds.
The new generation will make use of a whole new system less prone to compromise and closer to to the roots of the Targa model. The presence of the large sliding plate recalls the mechanism of the old 964 Targa - the generation introduced in 1965 that disappered in favor of the 993 - that only had the roll-bar to ensure safety in case of rollover. Just the rear window will stay in place, while the central section will be completely open-top. At the moment it is not clear whether the new Targa will be offered as an all-wheel drive model only (as in 997’s case) or a rear wheel drive variant will also be part of the game.
