Bajaj Auto RE60

Long running Indian vehicle manufacturer Bajaj Auto has unveiled what is going to become its first ever four wheels vehicle, the RE60. In spite of its name, Bajaj Auto made a name for itself in its homeland as the maker of highly successful motorcycles and three-wheelers, and the RE60 (formerly known as ULC: Ultra Low Cost) somewhat represents their first serious attempt to break in the four wheels market. However, as Bajaj Auto main man Rajiv Bajaj pointed out at the official presentation of the model at Taj Palace hotel in New Delhi, the RE60 “is not a car. It’s a four wheeler“, highlighting the fact that the model is meant to be an ultra-economical vehicle that - in the plans of the carmaker - will go on to replace three-wheel autorickshaws as a more convenient and safe mode of transportation.

Bajaj Auto RE60 measures 2,752 mm in length, 1.312 mm in width and 1,650 mm in height, and will come with a rear mounted 200 cc water-cooled, fuel-injected DTSi engine producing about 20 hp and pushing the car to 70 km/h of top speed, but quite clearly performance is not what this model is about. With a claimed average fuel consumption of 2.5 l/100km , CO2 emission of 60g/km and a weight of only 400 kg, the RE60 is without a doubt one of the most fuel-efficient and green vehicles in the market.

The cabin can accommodate up to 4 passenger (driver included) and it is as basic as you can expect, with instrumentation placed in the middle of the dashboard and the gear lever just underneath it. Besides, it comes with an integrated digital fare meter, folding front window, solid doors and a hard top. The Bajaj RE60 will be manufactured at Bajaj’s three-wheeler plant in Aurangabad whose capacity will be expanded. Exact pricing details have not been revealed but we would expect the car to priced closely to Tata Nano’s range.
